Dover, Del. (Jan. 9, 2023) --- Defending MEAC champ Norfolk State won its 14th game in a row over Delaware State with its 78-65 victory in Memorial Hall Monday evening. Preseason MEAC Player-of-the-Year Joe Bryant scored 20 points and George Beale came off the bench to add 19 to lead the Spartans, who improved to 12-5 overall and 2-0 in the MEAC this season. Guards Jevin Muniz and Martaz Robinson each tallied career-high point totals to lead Delaware State. Muniz scored a game-high 22 points, highlighted by five-of-seven shooting on three-point shots, while Robinson chipped in 21 points, keyed by 10-for-10 shooting at the free throw line. Center Raymond Somerville also had a personal-best 13 points and led all players with 10 rebounds for the Hornets. Delaware State trailed 9-2 in the early going before rallying to take the lead. Robinson capped off a 12-0 run with a three-pointer to give the Hornets a 14-9 lead with 14:09 left in the first half. Norfolk State responded by scoring 18 of the 20 points, and pulled ahead 27-16 after a basket by Kris Bankston at the 5:21 mark of the half. The Spartans led 36-29 at the break. Norfolk State was ahead by as many as 15 points in the second half before a furious comeback attempt by the Hornets. Delaware State outscored the Spartans 15-5 during an eight-minute stretch of the second half, and trimmed the deficit to 49-44 on a jumper by Somerville with 9:08 left to play. The Hornets, however, could get no closer the rest of the way. Norfolk State was aided by hitting 20-of-23 free throws in the second half (87%). Delaware State dropped its 13th straight game to fall to 1-14 overall and 0-2 in the MEAC this season.
