How many of you had your school's basketball team open the season this week? Any exhibition games out there that you played? Did any of your teams play against any foreign teams?

We opened last night against D-II Stonehill. We won 107-69, not a big deal; we SHOULD be able to defeat a D-II team without any problems. Thankfully we got through it with zero injuries.

Anybody else open up this week?

I see in the paper today, that Tubby Smith has awarded Travis Busch a scholarship at Minnesota. He should get some good playing time with the Gophers this year. Was he just homesick at Poly?

Why would Montana fans "clam up" when talking basketball?
The Griz have certainly had more success than anyone else other than Weber in the Big Sky.

And then there's the Lady Griz, who have historically dominated the conference in a way even the football team has yet to achieve.

Under a new HC, Lehigh has opened fairly well, losing a close 3 point game at Cornell, who some pick to challenge for the Ivy title this year, and a 4 point win over St. Peters at home. Some good young talent. They need one of their 'big men' to elevate their game if they expect to challenge for the PL. Otherwise, they'll be scrambling for a 3-4 seed.

The Cats are only picked to finish 5th in the Sky this year, but many faithful have higher expectations for second year coach Brad Huse. We have some very good young talent to go with a few key seniors. It all depends on how well the youngsters play. Bobby Howard, a true freshman and one of the better basketball prospects to come out of Montana in the last few years, dropped 27 on Boise State Friday night as the Cats improved to 2-1 with wins over BSU (86-83) and Long Beach State (74-56), with our only loss coming to UNLV by 11 on the road.

Fullerton made a mandate this year that teams have to play a certain OOC schedule that ranks in a certain RPI bracket, hoping to improve the seed of the auto-bid team. The Cats have

@ Fresno State
@ UC Santa Barbara
Alcorn State
@ Nevada
@ Wyomming
@ Arizona State
a few home games vs lower tier teams
@ Oregon State

Overall, a pretty tough schedule for a Big Sky squad.

You will know more about your squad after facing Albany in two days! Albany lost a close one to open the season, by 3 to Bucknell (at Bucknell). We had a T to start the game because of a pre-game dunk. This was an even match up.

Albany then beat CCSU on the road...and absolutely throttled the same Columbia team that lost to Ohio State (by 14)...70-38 last night.

Albany boasts a starting line up of:

6'5 220
6'5 215
6'8 230
6'9 240
6'7 245

We go 11 deep, 10 players have scored in a game...and the first subs off the bench go:

6'11 265
6'7 280
6'1 210 (with a 48" vert-- will be starting at some point-- He is the next Jamar Wilson).
6'1 200
5'9 180-- Prolific three-point specialist.

After watching three games (2 in person, 1 on TV), I would have to say App is very weak on the hardwood.

I think it starts at coaching since they can't sustain a run or stop one. But of course, Houston would blame it on the students since they didn't go down to Statesboro.

We got hosed last night at the U of Alabama, losing in OT, 63-61. We had a 6-pt lead with around 20 seconds to go in regulation, and Bama gets two three-pointers in a span of seven seconds. On the first one, they call us for a foul away from the ball, and not only did the shot count, they got the ball out of bounds. Of course they drain another three to tie it with about 10 seconds left. We miss at the buzzer and eventually lost by two in OT. The foul was questionable in the first place and the contact happened before the shot. Tough to lose a game like that when we outplayed them and led most of the way.

We're 5-2 overall, with both losses coming to SEC opponents. LSU by 10 on the road (closer than score) and of course Bama by two, also on the road. We have another SEC opponent coming up on Saturday when we take on Mississippi State. We beat them at their place two years ago, and hopefully we can make another run at them. Will play at UTEP and Iowa later in the year before starting Southland Conference play.

True, but our BB Eagles should win their game against Fort Valley State tonight and go into Saturday's game with Florida at 7 - 1. Our only loss is to Florida State, and while we may not have played the toughest competition so far, we have beaten UAB, Cleveland State (who has had a couple of pretty good seasons) and Mercer (who beat Southern Cal earlier this year). BEARS MAKING WAVES WITH 7-1 START
MEN'S BASKETBALL • Dec 4, 2007

CONWAY, Ark _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears are making waves nationally with their 7-1 start.

The Bears are one of only 23 teams in the country with at least seven victories in the first month of the season. They received 21 votes in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll this week.

And finally, if UCA was not considered a transitional team by the NCAA, the Bears would be ranked in the top 50 in Division I in several categories, including 20th in rebound margin, 29th in blocked shots and 38th in field goal defense.

"I think it's another sign that we're off to a really good start and that the guys are playing well,' UCA head coach Rand Chappell said. "Most of the statistical rankings are on the defensive and rebounding side of things, and I think good play and our consistency in those areas is what has allowed us to get to 7-1.'

But Chappell was also impressed with his offense in the Bears' last outing, a solid 82-68 road victory over Jacksonville State that completed a sweep of the Ohio Valley Conference team.

"The offensive is definitely starting to show signs,' he said on the eve of the Bears' home game with the University of Idaho on Wednesday night at the Farris Center. "I thought in last Saturday's game we came the closest we have to putting together a total game, offensively and defensively, that we have all season. We didn't get all 40 minutes but we got 30-plus at least.'

The Bears placed all five players in double figures, led by guards Nate Bowie and Marcus Pillow with 18 points each. Center Brian Marks and forward Durrell Nevels pulled down 17 and 11 rebounds, respectively.

"That's something that has our team feeling good about themselves,' Chappell said. "Everyone has pretty good confidence across the entire lineup right now. I think it also shows the team is sharing the ball well with each other and that there is good chemistry.'

The Bears will take on a team of a different kind in Idaho, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, a squad UCA will face again on Dec. 18 in Moscow, Idaho.

Well, Brown couldn't win it against Providence. They were bigger and faster than us, and we were cold shooting most of the night. It was a six-point game with about 15 minutes left, but PC went on a run and beat us 70-51. Moves us overall to 4-4, and now Brown takes a two week break for finals before they play their holiday schedule, which includes three road games in a row at Hartford, Notre Dame, and Army. I'll take it. Colgate has played a comparatively difficult schedule.

OTOH, Princeton is at 2-9 and probably looking at 2-12 (they have D-II Dominican at home in January, which they should win).

Damn, Joe Scott really wrecked a proud program - the cupboard is truly bare. It may take many years for Princeton to return to success.

I'll take it. Colgate has played a comparatively difficult schedule.

Their schedule is definately tougher than in years past, and they've actually won most of the games. No D-III Juniata or Hamilton on there, which is nice to see.

The wins over Monmouth, Texas State and especially at Cornell were nice. Of the losses, it would have been nicer to beat Dartmouth and/or Marist. Combined margin of defeat was 6 points, only 1 to Marist. Otherwise, we're winning the games we should be and have taken it on the chin against the big boys (Notre Dame, Syracuse, Penn State). Would have liked to have been more competitive in maybe one of those, but if that's the worst that happens this season, I can be content with that

Wished that we would have won the game. I don't want to go hang on to Nebraska as our best non-conference win. Michigan is not doing so well right now. It doesn't look good for Western Kentucky's at-large chances at this point.

WKU might be our best Non-con win, depending on the Butler game Friday, and depending on how St. Mary's fairs for the rest of the season.

Goodness, another year of UNH Basketball! YAY!

In all seriousness, this is the best team UNH has had in awhile. If Mike Christensen didn't turn the ball over 4000 times a game, UNH might have a few more wins. They ALMOST beat BC, URI, Iona, Long Island and Northeastern, but that really doesn't count. UNH needs to get off the schneid and grab one against Colgate to move to 4-7. The goal, as far as I'm concerned, is .500 in conference. If we can do that, I'll be pleased with this season.

Once again, SIU finds a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Up by 1 with 20 seconds left, go to the line for a 1 and 1, brick the first one, watch Butler go down, take their time-out, draw up their play, only to have their main guy travel and give us the ball back with 6 seconds. Joy! Happy day! A win! Inbound, get fouled, go to the line for 1 and 1...LANE VIOLATION.

Graves goes down the court, 3 seconds off the clock, last second three from NBA range...straight in..

*sigh*

Conference play starts Sunday..please..something good happen.

Ugh...yeah...Came home from the game, pretty down about it..

Turn on ESPN2, they're showing their Top 10 plays, I was hoping maybe to see the no-look behind the back pass from Mullins to Bone for a nice lay-up between two defenders...nope, #1 was Graves' shot...

Then the Sports Center that came on after the Oregon State game opened with it. Ugh.

Its more like they escaped with a win. GSU led the entire game until the end. We had a chance to pretty much ice the game with 30 seconds left up by 2 shooting two from the line. We clanked both, and the rest is history. xbawlingx

Last night GSU shot 18-20 from the line until the end of the game, we missed our last 7 free throws and let A&M CC make the game look respectable.

Unless we hit our foul shots today, we don't have a chance. xconfusedx
