VMI's Coach Wachenheim resigns......been very hard for VMI to compete recently with the COVID/Double redshirt stuff.

Wach is arguably the most accomplished football coach at VMI in at least the last half century, particularly in light of how college football has changed. It's even more remarkable given the number of quality assistant coaches and high-level grad transfers that his program ultimately developed for other schools. Good luck to him and Karla going forward.

Wach did a good job at VMI. The Keydets head coaching job has to be one of the most challenging in the country and he had some success there.

Hate to see him go. Got the absolute most out of the talent available to him. Must have an incredible ability to ID HS talent that will fit into the program. Also, had heavy ‘churn’ of Assistants - most moving up to bigger/better jobs and Team did not lose continuity. Really, really good Football Coach. SoCon will miss him. Hey, maybe once he’s had some time off, TR or Maconga, as an Asst Coach, might appeal to him. He would make any Team better.

If he ends up coaching another FCS team, that team immediately makes my watch list for the upcoming season. If already on the watch list, they receive serious consideration for inclusion in my preseason poll. Dude is that good.

I "liked" the decision to hire him last year, as I remember his stint at the school earlier, plus he bleeds maroon (I was hoping LC would make another non-sensical hire like Garrett!). I sense the players like and 'gravitate' to him, like our guys did with Andy. You don't see that at Lehigh, now. I do think he needs changes on offense. Not sure if it is lack of personnel, as I know LC had a number of impactful injuries this year. But, overall, I think he had a good first season..winning four and almost knocking off the champ.

The CP fans think he will stick around. Three years later they are still blaming Tim Walsh for “destroying the program”. I used to believe in the give them time scenario, but with TT who immediately built a contender the following year at Sac, I now think time is just a waste. Beau has lost his magic it appears.

Amazingly, Gordy Combs, the man Ambrose replaced at Towson, was 91-91 in his 19 seasons leading the Tigers. This means over the last 32 years Towson is exactly a .500 program between two coaches. That is a crazy stat imo....

Yeah, but as I recall, Sac had some talent when TT took over and he didn't totally change everything. This year, Eck also got good results taking over a team with decent talent and a similar O and D to what he's running now.

Baldwin is completely changing the style of play. I think that reasonably takes a number of years. But if I were a Cal-Poly fan, I'd be nervous that I don't see much improvement. You'd like to at least be able to see that the ship is turning towards the right direction by now. I'd be inclined to give him a couple more years, but maybe that's because I don't have a dog in the fight.

I mean, look at Bobby. 5 years (so far) to return to dominance. xcoffeex

Lafayette made announcement about not renewing Garrett's contract on the Monday after last year's loss to Lehigh. So the clock is ticking down on Gilmore. If he has one more year on his contract, that makes it a different situation, I guess. But the results on the field require some action nevertheless.

Keep an eye on Bernard Clark at Robert Morris. In four full seasons u three games during the COVID created spring season of 2021, Clark is just 13-34 and just had an 0-11 season. Yes, the transition to the Big South is part of that, but this is NOT what RMU envisioned after Clark went 7-5/6-1 in the final year in the Northeast Conference.

No news yet, but RMU moves slow on this stuff sometimes. Something to watch.

Yeah, but as I recall, Sac had some talent when TT took over and he didn't totally change everything.

Sac had a boatload of injuries during the last Jody Sears season, and a lot of those players then got hardship wavers. As a result, Taylor essentially inherited the team that went 7-4 in 2017.

Yes. But Cincinnati is in the Big 12. That will matter to Prime's ego. It doesn't matter where in the country you are, if Sanders walks into your living room to recruit you, it will be really hard to say no.

Good luck to Deion. Obviously he's known for the swagger and for his ability to land top recruits, but you don't have the level of success he's had at such a short time at Jackson State without actually being a very good coach.

Wish we could've seen Jackson State actually play someone this year -- either a top 10 FCS team or a decent AAC or Sun Belt team to see how they'd have stacked up. Because we'll never know.

Charleston Southern has hired Gabe Giardina as their new head coach. Giardina comes back to Ladson after four seasons as the HC at D2 Albany State where he went 37-17 but, prior to that he was the OC/OL coach during Jamey Chadwell's run at CSU. Prior to that, he was RB's coach at CSU under Jay Mills from 2008-2011.

https://www.postandcourier.com/sports/college/charleston-southern-hires-former-jamey-chadwell-assistant-as-new-football-coach/article_2e8410a8-70ee-11ed-bd38-2325b8e0faa4.html

This is doesn't feel like a typical Jeff Barber hire for CSU. Barber likes to make significant hires that make statements about the athletic direction of the university, hence hiring Autry Denson from Notre Dame four years ago. I don't think CSU can afford that at this point post-COVID. This, feels like CSU waking up still hungover two days after a rager and going back to the Chadwell keg to see if they can scrape anything more out of it before being forced to toss the whole thing out.

Fun possibly unrelated fact: During a game at CSU in 2013, I once heard Giardina loudly ripping into one of his O-linemen on the sideline who had whiffed his blocking assignment and asking the kid if it was because he was stupid. I was on top of the press box at the time.

A very tough place to win. Very. That success at Chuck South, and his success at Coastal, is what made Chadwell such a coaching hot commodity and rock star. He will be coaching a P5 program shortly.

Yeah, I don't doubt his ability to recruit. He did get a 5-star to come to the FCS. Coaching against P5 FBS-level coaching staffs is a whole different ball game though.
If the goal was to get people talking about Colorado football though...a team that won 1 game last year and has only had 1 winning season in the last 15 years...mission accomplished.

I do think Deion has some cred that goes beyond being a great recruiter at an FCS program. The level of dominance that Jackson State showed within their group of opponents makes it pretty obvious the bar was raised there substantially in a short period of time. The X's and O's are there IMO -- the man can not only recruit but also coach those recruits. Even at the FCS level you don't go from middle of the pack in your league to champs overnight just by bringing in a handful of 4 stars. JSU was not really even competing for SWAC titles before he got there, the only "championships" they were winning were in attendance.

He'll meet his match for sure in the Pac 12 (or whatever league Colorado ends up in) but I'm going to predict he brings them into the Top 25 within two years. Bold, but I see it happening.

Like Chesney at Holy Cross, he "gets" the current generation of HS and collegiate athletes.

He turned around La Tech to a degree, then had a dismal record at Tenn, but he got a team in shambles. He has done some good things as a position coach and coordinator. Not sure how we can meet his expected salary, but he probably wants a head coach gig to try one more time before he gets too old. He may not care about the money. But I would hate to have another coach do a hit and run like Houston did. May be wanting to retire in Charleston.

I would think a typical coaching progression would be BYU DC to Weber St HC not the other way around. Maybe he feels like BYU's current HC is on the move soon giving him a chance to take over there or follow to somewhere bigger and better.

Or maybe they just offered to double/triple his annual salary.

Or maybe they just offered to double/triple his annual salary.

With them joining the Big 12, probably that. They won't be getting Big 10 or SEC TV money, but Big 12 money is probably more than Independent TV money. BYU is estimated to be getting between $8 and $14 million for their independent TV deal, and should be around $50 million when they join the Big 12 for TV, bowl games, NCAA tournament payouts, etc.
It's less responsibility, but I'd bet it's WAY more money.

According to an article I found regarding Weber State's Jay Hill from February 2021:

His last contract increased his base salary to $185,000, according to public records at the time, in addition to a $90,000 annual base for a rate of $275,000 that made him the highest-paid coach in the Big Sky Conference at the time.

Meanwhile, it looks like coordinators at the Big 12 level are making anywhere from around $600k to just over $1mil per year. If he's getting the middle of that range (~$800k), that's just under a 3x increase.

He will go from making $290k to $1M. I also think it will give him a much better chance at to get a Power 5 HC jog down the line. He was getting a lot of looks for jobs 2-3 years ago but nothing materialized and I think he was falling off the radar a bit.

I've heard elsewhere that the "long term plan" is for him to take over for Kyle Whittingham (currently 63) as HC at Utah when he retires. Whittingham has been coaching at Utah since 1994 and HC since 2005. Hill played at Utah in '98-'99, coached at Utah at various positions from '01-'13 before taking over the HC job at Weber State in 2014. Getting a few years of coordinator experience at the P5 level is probably the final thing he'd need on his resume to be in line to take over at Utah. And to have that P5 experience be literally just down the road at BYU (depending on where he lives, might not even need to move/uproot his family) is just about the ideal scenario for him.

That's a questionable hire to say the least.

If I were a TAMU-C fan, I'd be less concerned about the on-field differences because, at its core, football is football and the size of the field and number of players on it is a matter of tactical detail, not program philosophy. However, I'd be far more concerned about Dolezel's experience with managing a full college roster -- AFL and IFL rosters are limited to 20 players -- as well as recruiting and then managing four-year college kids vs. semi-pro adults who are actively trying to prove their ability in the short-term. I expect that his first few recruiting classes are going to have a LOT of juco guys in them.

Amazing for him. You don't see that kind of upward mobility often, although their most successful coach of all time went from FCS to them, so maybe they're trying to recapture that magic.

As for Sac State, it depends how much of his staff he takes with him. If it's all/most of it, I think it's back to the Big Sky cellar for Sac after long.

Kind of related, if by some miracle Vigen gets poached after this season, this and Hill leaving might be the best thing that could have ever happened for Bobby and the Griz. xlolx

Kind of related, if by some miracle Vigen gets poached after this season, this and Hill leaving might be the best thing that could have ever happened for Bobby and the Griz. xlolx

If we somehow win the Natty I think I would almost expect Vigen to move on, he's a great coach and we're just a stepping stone. When we do lose Vigen, I think it will be in the best interest for both Montana and Montana State to start seriously pursuing moving up. If we want to stay relevant we need the money to just fricken keep decent coaches with the cost of living in MT now.

Move up where? Neither school has a shot at the MWC, and that new WAC conference looks like a sinking ship.

I'd love for the top of the Big Sky/MVFC to move up together, but that sounds like a pipe dream.

I'm still not convinced we aren't far away from the P5 completely breaking away from the NCAA, so thinking about where we fit in the current landscape might become a moot exercise.

Anyways, I would hate for Vigen to move on after this year for one reason, simply because we wouldn't have any chance for redemption next year, like we lost when Choate left.

I think the MWC would consider NMSU, UTEP, UTSA, or North Texas before they would want UM and MUS (they'd have to take both).

My hunch is that there won't be a "move up" scenario. The top of FCS and G5 are more likely to be forced to form their own league after the P5 breaks away. Thinking about in terms of how things are right now, where G5 is a level above, might not make sense anymore. Everything could fundamentally change.

UC Davis Offensive Coordinator, Cody Hawkins, has been named the new Head Coach at Idaho State. Hawkins is the son of Aggie Head Coach Dan Hawkins. This should make for an interesting father-son battle when Idaho State plays at Davis next year on November 11, 2023. Hawkins guided the Aggies to the 4th best offensive team in the nation this year with an average of 486.5 yards per game against the toughest schedule in Aggie history.

Don’t disrespect Chesney like that. He’s much better looking than the Ukrainian guy.

HC should be even better next year, so I don’t think Chesney will be moving this year, unless a very attractive job were to fall into his lap.

Syracuse still hasn't hired anyone yet? Usually FBS schools, especially the P5 ones, want to have a new coach with as much time as possible before the early singing period (which starts on Wednesday 12/21 this year) since that's when most FBS caliber recruits sign their LOIs. Both times that NDSU has gotten a coach poached it was around the 2nd round of the FCS playoffs so I'd think the chances of Chesney leaving are less now than they would've been a week or two ago... most FBS teams don't give two ****s if the coach they're courting is coaching in the FCS playoffs so they won't wait around.

Syracuse snuck past Boston College in the season finale to avoid ending the regular season on a 6 game losing streak. I agree, although I think it would have to be a really good opportunity; ND or Michigan DC? If he was an offensive guy I would say kick Tommy Reese to the curb and hire Chesney as the OC. One could argue Chesney would still be a significant upgrade. Otherwise, I think Chesney stays the course until the right FBS head gig opens. Syracuse would be pretty attractive imo...

Few things...

1) He's run his own program for the past 13 seasons. Simply don't see him taking a backseat and no longer being "the guy" at his next destination.

2) Don't believe he wants to hitch his wagon to another coach. What happens if that coach at XYZ P5 schools flames out? He doesn't want to then be forced into his next job just to stay employed.

3) From what I have gathered about Chesney, he'd actually struggle stepping into the role of coordinator. He's very, very good about allowing his OC and DC run those sides of the program. Where Chesney makes his mark is as a program builder, culture changer, hiring the best people for their roles on staff, recruiter, and motivator. Going the coordinator route is not going to be his path to the big time.

4) Not all about the money to him (although obviously big dollars talk). His family have been in the Worcester area since 2013 and this is where he has raised his kids. I'm not saying he won't leave at some point, but it has to be a very good situation for him.

5) HC figures to be even better next year. As he's developing his own personal brand, 2023 would be the time to leave. There's going to be even more buzz going into next season and during the season around HC and Chesney than there was this year. They also play more of a national schedule next season (Army and BC), so if HC knocks off one of those teams, wins the PL for the fifth straight time, and advances deeper into the FCS playoffs, he's going to have better options.

In summation, some coaches might immediately jump at a Group of Five head coaching job or P5 job just to take the money and continue the escalate the coaching ladder, but that's not Chesney.

Lots of gnashing of teeth on our board about the process and whether we needed the "search firm" since some claim it was him all along. I know you push the process part of it, but I wonder how much process we really needed with a grad and the familiarity of a twice former coach to boot. One poster even flat out said it was nothing but window dressing for some people. Not sure if that was actual knowledge or just whining.

The other sore spot is the timing. He isn't going to be 100% on the job until the second week of Jan due to his obligations with the Raiders. So...we will miss a year of full on recruiting. I don't know if it will be as dire as some paint it, but it won't be good.

He maybe should have gotten the nod last time, but between an O coordinator running an option O and a D coordinator, it isn't surprising Thompson got picked.

The next question will be if he will content to remain indefinitely as his life's goal, or will he be looking to jump higher when, if, he has success. Having a stable, successful coach for an extended period would be nice. I hate being nothing but a stepping stone or filter for coaches on the move. But we need to see how he does first.

15-20 does not suggest a clear front-runner, and also suggests a lot of less prominent names in the mix. OK, I get it, Bob Chesney is not walking through that door, but I'm not sure Lehigh can sign a NEC coordinator or a head coach from the Centennial Conference given where the program is right now.

Did not see that coming, especially as A&T wrapped up their season nearly a month ago and we're only a week out from the early signing period. I'm guessing he's going to someone else's staff.

I learned the Chancellor ended the relationship. If he did that for Connell Maynor, I’ll be pissed.

I disagree, despite recent struggles, Lehigh is one of the best FCS jobs in the area with a history of success and caring about football. I just think Joe Sterret has lost his fastball and didn’t go into the process with a short list or a clear vision for the type of coach he wants.

At this point, he should ask a Dave Clawson or Kevin Higgins to do him a solid and ask their opinion. Nobody knows the best guys better than current coaches you trust.

Not even close. Only has 2.5 years experience as a ‘real’ position Coach (bolded below). Actually, after further review, maybe only 1 year as it seems the Inside Receivers Coach reported to the Wide Receivers Coach. So 1.5 years as an Asst Position Coach & 1 year as a full-fledged Position Coach. 0 years as an On-the-Field Coordinator. FUBeAR has never seen a faster track to HC than this one. Good luck to him. He may be GREAT!

2017 - Bowling Green State University, Defensive Backs/ Special Teams Graduate Assistant
2017 - Also served at BG stint as the WRs Graduate Assistant
2018 - UIW - Quality Control - Wide Receivers
2019 - UIW - Quality Control/On Campus Recruiting Coordinator
2020 - UIW - Inside Receivers / Recruiting Coordinator (6 game season)
2021 - UIW - Inside Receivers / Recruiting Coordinator
2022 - UIW - Associate Head Coach/Wide Receivers/Recruiting Coordinator

Not necessarily. Pete Lembo became the nation's youngest head coach at Lehigh in 2001 at age 29, when Kevin Higgins unexpectedly left due to an "offer that could not be refused" from the NFL, albeit it was with the bottom rung Detroit Lions. One could not blame him for taking the chance. But Lembo, OC Cecchini and DC Gilmore had approached the AD and promised they would all stay another 2-3 years if the new HC was one of them. Lehigh was riding a big wave at the time and keeping the momentum was paramount. Lembo go the nod and Lehigh continued to surf for another five years.

Lembo was 30; almost 31 when he was named Lehigh’s HC on February 7, 2001.

But…more importantly, he had 7 years of experience as a college position Coach and experience as an Offensive Coordinator when he was named a Head Coach.

This could turn out to be a homerun hire for UIW, but using an analogy to FUBeAR’s Search Firm experience. If FUBeAR submitted a ‘blinded’ version of Killough’s resume to a typical Search Committee seeking an FCS Head Coach, they would ask for a refund of their Retainer immediately.

Interesting. I am pretty sure when he was selected that they said he was 29...or it may have been when they announced him being 'associate head coach' for Higgins. Regardless, the can be need for continuity in order to retain most of your core team, AND as long has the HC has an excellent staff around him, it can work. Gilmore, the following year, received the Assistant Coach of the Year Award in the nation at the FCS level, and Cecchini was hired away soon after by Harvard as their OC.

By any reasonable metric, this is not a home run hire. In fact, it's barely a hire at all.

Having said that, Killough may truly be some kind of wunderkind who will wow the rest of FCS. But you have to acknowledge that, from the outside looking in, hiring a guy to run your D1 program who has only been coaching for five years total -- one of which was a chapter in the tragic comedy of Mike Jinks' tenure at Bowling Green, btw -- and who's barely old enough to rent a car for recruiting visits, looks like all kinds of risky.

I think this -- and the UIW hire -- illustrate how, with the start of the Early Signing Period less than a week away, AD's seem to panic and promote the first guy sitting to the right in the staff meetings just to "keep the program's momentum going". For UIW, you can probably make a realistic argument for that but MO State's momentum is "meh" at best.

I wouldn't include Towson, Delaware or Nova in the list that NC A&T is "better than". I wouldn't have included Monmouth if QB Tony Muskett hadn't deserted to UVA and there weren't 9 other MU players in the portal. I would put NC A&T on a par with Monmouth, Maine and Albany. That leaves Stony Brook and Hampton the CAA teams that NC A&T are already "better than". Monmouth was widely touted as a team that would be highly competitive in the CAA right out of the gate; and they had a better recent Big South resume than NC A&T the last 2-3 seasons before moving to the CAA. NC A&T had their best seasons 2016 - 2019.

Exactly. What worked in the MEAC and against teams that can't throw, won't work against teams with good to great QB play. And it's a reason why the PR says "mutually agreed to part ways." He didn't want to coach in the CAA. We need someone that wants to be there.

This move makes no sense at all for either party. Ed Reed is an all-time great player at every level but there is very little in his work or playing history that suggests he has the executive or recruiting skills necessary to be a college head coach and even less to suggest that coaching even interests him.

This isn't the equivalent of Jackson State hiring Deion Sanders, it's the equivalent of Indianapolis hiring Jeff Saturday.

Y'all can go back on this forum and look but I never said JSU hiring Deion was dumb. It was high-risk/high-reward but it wasn't dumb. Still, this isn't that situation at all.

Deion had been active in business and had already built his own program from the ground up at Prime Academy so he had a lot of experience making executive decisions well before he set foot in Jackson. He was also an established and charismatic marketing brand. You can downplay his coaching experience as merely being at the HS level but at least he had it. Further, Deion had a clear endgame in mind when he took the JSU job, stating publicly on multiple occasions that he wanted to be a P5 head coach in the near future.

Ed Reed has NONE of this going into B-C.

Ed Reed was a part-time assistant DB coach for one year in 2015 and was a figurehead admin at the U for the last three years. That's a gap of five years where nothing coaching-related or program-related happened and the last three years in which he could've been actively coaching at least a position but didn't. This tells us that (A) Ed Reed gets into college athletics when he feels like it and that (B) he doesn't feel like it all that often. Is Ed Reed a good marketer? Has Ed Reed even been in the public eye since he retired? The only thing I can barely point to in terms of headlines -- and just barely -- is a briefly publicized Twitter spat with Jack Del Rio. What of that suggests that Ed Reed will successfully lead the Bethune-Cookman program? Frankly, I'm shocked he was even interested in the job.

I get that Terry Sims has been 4-18 since the epidemic year but this seems like B-C is grasping at straws, trying to recreate the Deion @ JSU Experience without understanding why that situation was unique. In fact, it reads a lot like the Tennessee State hiring of Eddie George, also in the wake of Deion at JSU. So far, that last hasn't gone particularly well for TSU.

Central Connecticut is the last FCS team to fill their head coaching vacancy. Adam Lechtenberg, a former offensive coordinator at CCSU is named 15th head coach in program history.

Not a very exciting hire, but probably the best we can expect with the current support from our President. This was not an appealing job for more experienced guys, but it isn't that hard to win here. He was part of our 2010 NEC Championship and we have 2 NCAA playoff appearances in our last 5 seasons played.

A former walk-on at Nebraska, Lechtenberg has coached at TCU, Virginia Tech, Memphis, Tenn-Martin, and D-II Central Oklahoma. His highlights are recruiting at Virgina Tech and Memphis for Justin Fuente. Young with potential, but not sure how he will build and manage a program, but we will see ...

BTW Raisin Canes opened inline downtown last week. I was going to try it (never been before) BUT line went out door to sidewalk.
Food sounds expensive there, but delivery is as reliable as the mail…

Ed Reed is out at Bethune-Cookman. I guess his tirade should have been behind closed doors.

Ed Reed is out at Bethune-Cookman.

I can't really say 'I told you so' because I think I was wrong about some of the specifics of the situation even though I was exactly correct that Ed Reed and Bethune-Cookman weren't a fit.

I just hope that, going forward, B-C and other HBCU's honestly evaluate why the "Deion Effect" worked at Jackson State before hopping on the nearest ex-NFL player who shows an interest in their program.

Over the last three days, Ed Reed sowed the seeds of his own demise. He was not a good representative of the school of to its students.
