SECOND PLACE TEAM IN THE PFL INVITED TO THE FCS PLAYOFFS!!!!!

OK, now I know what you are all thinking…. Yet another justification for San Diego to be invited to the FCS playoffs…. Well, as a famous national rental car company commercial might be inclined to say…. Not exactly.

Today, San Diego, Dayton, and Morehead State sit atop the PFL with 4-1 records. Who is in the driver’s seat you ask? Would you believe Morehead State? MSU is the only team to defeat the Dayton Flyers this year. Of course as we all know by now, Dayton defeated San Diego on Saturday for the Toreros lone loss. Morehead State’s lone loss in the PFL was to Jacksonville.

If we look at the schedules the next three weeks, we see the following:

USD – host Davidson, at Morehead State, at UC Davis

Dayton – host Butler, at Drake

Morehead State – host Drake, host San Diego, at FBS Western Kentucky

So, let’s assume that Dayton defeats Butler and Drake and that Morehead State defeats Drake and San Diego.

Dayton finishes at 6-1 in the PFL, 10-1 overall

MSU finishes at 6-1 in the PFL, 8-3 overall, ( I’m figuring that MSU loses to Western Kentucky )

By virtue of their win over the Flyers in head to head competition, MSU is awarded the PFL title and hosts the Gridiron Classic!

Dayton at 10-1 finishes “second” in the PFL by virtue of the tie-breaker, has a win over playoff participant Fordham, ( I hope ), might even be ranked, and is invited to the FCS playoffs!

For a Dayton fan, it would leave a very bad taste in my mouth if MSU hosts the Gridiron Classic while Dayton sits at home…. I guess that Dayton should not have lost at MSU….xbawlingx

Kind of an interesting possible quirk in the scheme of things!xeekx

Dude, listen, great win, great season so far.....but there is no way Dayton will get an at-large. One decent OOC win (over Fordham) is not enough.

Sorry. But like I said....great win last weekend, great season so far. Keep playing well and hopefully we'll see an Albany at Dayton Gridiron Classic.

At least two good wins and maybe three.

1. Fordham - Maybe ranked and a playoff participant.

2. #24 FCS Coaches Poll San Diego

3. Drake

We still have to take care of business the next two weeks, but it could be possible....

It's a stretch, but not impossible for Dayton to receive consideration for a playoff bid. You're gonna need some help to get the spot though. xnodx

Much more likely scenario, Dayton hosts Albany in the Gridiron Classic.

If that is the case then Albany should be considered as well. 8-3 against a tougher schedule with wins against Fordham PL Champ and full scholly Stony Brook who probaby finishes 7-4. I knew that BS loss to Colgate would haunt UA!

Look I know this is a longshot but I can't see Dayton for the same reasons San Diego has been denied. Dayton or Morhead or SD vs NEC representative is the true post season this year.

Detroit Flyer usually I have your back but I just can't on this one. Very slim chance that UD is even brought up for a second at the time of selection. Our schedule is just not there. Now, do I think UD could compete in the playoffs?, absolutlely, but will they even get a sniff, nope.

The answer like always: increase the playoff field.xnonono2x

There are to many great 8-3 teams that beat on each other this year. I doubt the committee will need to stretch so far to find a team to invite, and invite Dayton. Sorry.

Again-- Why is the Drake win a good win? Who have they played...who have they beaten...who have they got waxed by?

Beat- Illinois State, a team playing well below preaseason expectations. Game won on trick play. Nicely done.

Lost- UNI....by a boatload...game was not even close after the 1st Qtr. San Diego- Slapped them silly.

Played- Numerous Sub-FCS teams.

LOST- TO DAYTON.

THIS EQUALS: A DAYTON VICTORY OVER A MIDDLE-TO LOW TIER FCS TEAM...and NOT A QUALITY VICTORY!

Albany, had they beaten Colgate...would enter the discussion but still be left out...and mind you both games against Hofstra and Montana were close late in the 4th.

Had Albany won against Colgate and Hofstra...that would be a schedule and quality wins that would propel them to the playoffs.

Didn't happen...no need to talk about it. Just like we need to not talk about a Dayton playoff bid....

Without the auto, Fordham might not be a playoff participant. xeyebrowx

Probably true concerning Fordham. Probably true of Lafayette last year....

All this does is show that teams that may not even be as good as the PFL Champion are getting into the playoffs, while the PFL Champion sits at home....

Everyone is picking Fordahm to win the Patriot League? I think that Holy Cross would have to be a least even with, if not ahead of Fordham in the discussion at this point. We will know for certain after these two square off. Colgate still has a shot for at least a share with only 1 league Loss to date.

DetroitFlyer-You've been hanging your hat on a win over the team that could very well be the PL runner up this year. You could make a better case if Fordham does win the league.

I will agree that whatever divide there is between our to conferences is closing. There have been several recent discussions within PL circles regarding the necessity of going to a scholarship system. Whether or not that move happens before the powers that be decide the PFL is more deserving of the Autobid? My magic 8 ball says the future is unclear.

Two sub- D-I wins on the schedule means eight D-I wins max for Dayton. There will be enough other teams with eight D-I wins and much stronger schedules to fill out the playoff field.
