Last season, everybody in the stands at Bowers Stadium held their breath whenever the Bearkats attempted an extra point.

Sam Houston State trotted out three different guys who missed a dismal 17-of-24 point after kicks before finally settling on senior punter Curtis Parks, who made all eight of his attempts.

At one point the kicking game was so bad, the Bearkat coaches thought about going for two-point conversions and started going for it more on fourth downs instead of electing to try a field goal.

Nicholls (5-3, 2-2) at Sam Houston (4-4, 2-2): Nicholls State's overtime loss likely dropped the Colonels to also-ran status, which is where Sam Houston already was before last week's 52-29 win over SFA.

The Colonels could be eligible for the playoffs by winning its last three games.

SLC Commish Tom Burnett...halftime interview...

(On SLC Attendance) Crowds in SLC have been good. Lake Charles has been very good, Central Arkansas a few weeks ago had a near sellout crowd for TV. Interest is up in conference. SLC is better overall, better product on field, pleased people want to see it. Some ranked teams, great players, things are on the up-swing.

(Cycles of SLC) Champions over last few years. SHSU and TXST made runs. McNeese team is poised for deep run, shot at championship perhaps. Throw in our newest guys in Conway. A well coached program.

(FCS Name Change) It's a mouthful, no doubt about it. We're going to stick with it. Such a negative connotation with I-AA that people didn't like. We were being referred to as Div II in our other sports like basketball, baseball. Trying to remind people that we are Div I football, bit different, but we're not Div II. Talks about cell phone being new AT&T, not Cingular. Takes some time, but positive. Number of FCS teams that won in FBS. Beat Rice, ULL. Every week, we see them score some upsets. Good football at this level, name of brand is more appropriate.

(Expansion of playoffs) Talk to expand to 18 initially, expand to 24 eventually. Beyond 24, not sure. Not sure SLC is interested in 18. 18 is perhaps for some leagues that don't quite sponsor the sport at same level that SLC does. Partial or non-scholarship teams. Not sure they deserve same access that others that commit much differently. 24, more at-large spots. Not sold on just 18. Those schools don't play national schedule -- don't go to Dakotas, Montanas, etc. Some of Div IIs we play are tougher than some of those schools. They may only sponsor 30 scholarships, less than Div II programs in Texas. Different brand of football. There is pretty good reason they don't sponsor sport at same level we do.

(On basketball tournament move) Major upgrade. Appropriate venue as SLC looks to improve year to year. A lot different tournament, effort. Friends in Houston that will help promote. Ticketmaster will get in with it in December. More marketing. More buy-in from Katy, West Houston. Much better tournament -- basketball starts next week. SLC is excited about hoops!

Bearkats hold off Nicholls for 16-13 victory

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State defense held a tough Nicholls State offense to just 249 yards and picked up a few key first downs in the final minutes to pull of a 16-13 victory on senior night at Bower Stadium.

For the Bearkats (5-4, 3-2 SLC), the victory over the 25th-ranked Colonels was the first win against a ranked opponent since the 2004 season when they defeated Eastern Washington in the quarterfinals of the I-AA playoffs.

Playing most of the game without quarterback Rhett Bomar who was lost for the season in the second quarter with a knee injury, sophomore running back Chris Poullard shouldered most of the load, running for 130 yards and the Kats only touchdown.

Bearkats hold off late rally, Bomar injures knee in 16-13 win

Backed by a dominating performance from its defense, Sam Houston State made some key plays down the stretch and held on to a 16-13 victory over Nicholls State on Saturday.

After starting quarterback Rhett Bomar went down right before halftime, running back Chris Poullard and fullback Matthew Powledge put the offense on their backs and carried the Bearkats (5-4, 3-2 in SLC) to a win in the fourth quarter.

Poullard almost single-handedly set up Taylor Wilkins’ game-winning 18-yard field goal with under seven minutes to play in the fourth, accounting for 35 of the drive’s 42 yards.
