View Full Version : Weber State @ Portland State

A couple hours before kickoff. Homecoming game for Portland State as they entertain Weber State. Gorgeous day for football. Temps will be near 60 by kickoff and not a cloud in the sky. White will not start and most likely will not play for the Vikings, having aggravated a thumb injury in the Idaho State game last week. Hubel gets his first start, a true freshman the Vikings actually stole from Corvallis. Oregon State actually offered him a scholarship to guide the hometown team, but Hubel wanted a chance to play right away and a chance to throw the football. I believe he ended his high school career sixth all time in Oregon football in career passing yards, a top ten list that includes such names as Dan Fouts, Neil Lomax and Joey Harrington.

Homecoming activities going on, gametime set for I thought 2:00 PDT, but I think it was pushed back to 2:30. I'm unable to attend, due to a Halloween party tonight that I am working at. I'll be listening to Viking football, though.

My fault. Pregame I said former Viking QB Lomax was on the Oregon passing yardage top 10 list. Lomax is not on it. Hubel is, though.

Part of the frustration is that the Vikings got a letter saying that the second fumble recovery for a TD by Idaho State last week should not have been a fumble, let alone run back for the TD. That came from the conference offices in Salt Lake City.

Sorry I was so short with my answer. Our guys were talking about the game, some stats because we were out of TO's and WSU was just going to run out the clock. Next thing, they are counting down the yards as Schantz was running down the field. Down or not, WSU still won.

I was just curious if it was one of "those" type of calls. We were talking about scoring eighty and then the runback. Not terribly upset, but just wondering.

Interesting that your people were talking about scoring again. After Etuati did the fake FG for the first down that was when our guys were giving props to our QB Hubel. The thought of 80 never entered our mind. We thought the game was over then.

The funny thing about this game, and the reason why so many did not see this coming, is that Weber has a pretty dang good defense. Coming into the game, Northern Arizona was the only offense in the conference that had scored more than a touchdown against them. Having played Montana, Montana State and Sacramento State, that is a tribute to the defense.

All I have to say is, WTF. Wish I could have seen the game. I haven't even looked at the box score or stats. Did either team play D. I know both teams have pretty good O's, and I've seen Weber's O.

I'll have to look up how many points each D was responsible for, because Weber D is better than how many points they gave up (ask MSU lol) and their O is certainly not good for 60+ points against any decent D. I like watching any close football game, and love to see O's running wild, just as much as I like seeing D's run wild. But this game must have been ridiculous.

Hubel had 9 TD's passing in his PSU debut. The only touchdown scored by the defense came late when the Vikings ran a fumble recovery back. Weber had a couple great kickoff returns and Etuati did return a punt for a touchdown, but the rest all came via offenses.

One interesting stat is that WSU punted only once in the game. PSU punted six times.

WSU was stopped by turnovers, which kept PSU in the game. WSU got a kickoff return and a punt return for a touchdown.

With all those yards, the longest play from scrimmage was 43 yards and that didn't result in a touchdown.
