FUBeAR’s POWER RANKINGS
No movers between the GOT’s & NOT’s classifications again this week.
Among the GOT’s, 2 of them were sleeping and 2 of them were sleepWALKING through most of their games with lower tier NOT’s. Thus, the 2 somnambulators did nothing to supplant the Top 2 Teams in FUBeAR’s Power Rankings. That said, with Chatt having the more difficult opponent on the road and Samford floundering around for most of their own Homecoming game against the last place NOT, the Mocs did move ahead of the HomewoodHounds.
NOT’s - We have some movement among the NOT’s this week. WCU fought hard and knocked Woffy off their not-so-lofty perch as the TopNot. CIT also moved ahead of idle ETSU. The bellhops played well against the Mocs, but they just can’t stop getting their male appendages caught in their luggage when they slam it shut. They will destroy that (fake) Team from VUL this week!
GOT’s
1t.Furman (5-1, 7-2 (#4 in FBS P5 ACC loss, Asterisked loss to highly-ranked FCS))
1t. Mercer (5-1, 7-2 (FBS P5 SEC loss, Top 10 FCS loss))
3. Chattanooga (5-1, 7-2 (#17 in FBS P5 B1G loss, Loss to FCS that SHOULD HAVE BEEN Top 10))
4. Samford (6-0, 8-1 (#1 in FBS P5 SEC loss))
———————————————
NOT’s
5. WCU (2-4, 4-5)
6. Wofford (2-4, 2-7)
7. CIT (2-5, 2-7)
8. ETSU (1-6, 3-6)
9. VMI (0-6, 1-8)

The Cats has developed a case of FUBeAR fever. Didn’t realize it could spread. You both have Mercer ranked 1st and of the top 4 SoCon teams Mercer is the only one of the 4 WITHOUT a win over any of the top 4. Hilarious stuff!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------
For Furman sure it would be great to win the next two but most people think they may get in at 8-3 with a win over Wofford even if they lose to Mercer. 8-3, yes a D2 win but also a Clemson loss, is really a 7-2 FCS record with a win over previously undefeated in FCS #6 Chattanooga. That's a damn good resume. l Chattanooga has not lost to ANYONE in FCS except Furman. Furman has only one FCS loss and that was to Samford with our backup QB having to play that week...
ANd i am assuming a loss to Mercer in saying we go 7-2 FCS (8-3 overall). And that in a SoCon with FOUR ranked teams! (One being Furman).. It would be odd to leave out a ranked team (Currently number 12) being the only team to beat Chattanooga (#6 at the time) and having their only loss with their backup QB..??? I think Furman is in as long as they split these next two games and go 8-3 overall.. 7-2 FCS. It is certainly possible..
Several articles ( written prior to Furman beating Chattanooga) said that Furman needed to win vs Chatt OR Mercer and then beat Wofford and they are 'probably' in with that ...

I'm using 8 wins as my "in" threshold. I agree that they would probably be in, but with only 7 D1 wins I think they'd be on the bubble and it would really depend on how many other 7 win teams there end up being and how the committee would view Furman's resume vs a 7 D1 win MVFC team or an 8 win Patriot team. By no means is Furman out if they were to lose to Mercer......but if you beat Mercer (and Wofford) you're in for sure.
I've seen some people predict four teams in for the SoCon this year and that would be fantastic. I'd like to see us get four teams in and them all have runs.

I may have touched a nerve on some of the soy sippers down in Homewood. I'm just glad I gave them something to talk about on their board...The most action they have gotten over there in weeks.

FIVE posts cannot possibly qualify as the most action we have gotten in weeks. No accuracy in that statement at all.
Mocs123
November 7th, 2022, 09:51 AM
Speaking of Homewood the homecoming crowd looked pretty sparse last week. Now, I can relate with teams not getting the fan support they deserve, but if it was a sparsely attended as it looked, that's a real shame for the Samford program as you guys are having a fantastic year and could - best case go undefeated in the SoCon (which hasn't happened since 2014) or even worse case (if you were to drop your last two) go to the playoffs.

You are right in that the crowd was small, even allowing for the bad weather. Under the circumstances it wasn't embarrassingly small IMO. There were fans in the fieldhouse area, inside the Bulldog Club, and other areas not visible to camera shots. Overall, however, I certainly agree that our attendance is disappointing. I have been talking to the administration about ways to improve this. I will say also that this year we are far above some recent season numbers.

SU Dog, you are usually a voice of reason and Apparently the Dog Pound doesn't care for opposing views so, I'll ask on here.
What I saw based on the first half of the VMI game was No penetration up front by the 3 DLs and a a slow to react LBs that were not covering sideline to sideline very well. That was the first half, and it was raining (so advantage offense)... Now Korey Bridey is a good back, and would be much better if he was working with a better supporting cast....but looking at his numbers, he came into the game averaging 36 yards per game and against Samford he had 119. VMI as a team averaged 67 yards per game coming into the samford game and put up 174 yards against Sammy....So, as I was saying Bridy is pretty good, but he would not be in the top two in Chattanooga's backfield. Ford and Appleberry are far superior to Bridy. Chattanooga's OL, still has some work to do, but they are a better unit than what VMI puts on the field...Taking that into account, tell me how I'm wrong to think the Mocs will Run at will vs the Sammy Defense?
Mocs123
November 7th, 2022, 10:31 AM
My guess is that the Bulldogs will come into the game with the intent to stop Ford and the Mocs running game and while Ford is going to get yards - dragging defenders if he has to, I think the key to the Mocs offense may be how Preston Hutchinson and the Mocs passing game does. If we can first off - take care of the ball, and secondly pass the ball downfield effectively enough I like our chances. If we turn it over or let the Bulldogs make us one dimensional, I feel less confident. Like I said, Ford is going to get some yards just by his herculean effort, but if we let the Bulldogs stack the box and not be able to take advantage of man-to-man coverage through the air, we're not nearly as dangerous.

Milktruck, if you have read much of our Board you would know that cujo likes to have fun on it. I'm more into info and data. So many of the SoCon Boards are now so silent that a little banter is really a good thing. Do you remember GaS and App arguments? Anyhow, about the upcoming game, I think you might be reading too much into those VMI stats, even though you do pose some valid questions. Looking at the season, Samford has played 6 SoCon games and has not given up a TD in HALF of them. Anybody else close to that mark? Even Georgia didn't run wild or "at will" against Samford. Yes, the Mocs rushing game will be a challenge for us and for any FCS team. I'm sure, however, that Coach Wright will do the smart thing and hold out Ford for the Playoffs. LOL! Seriously, I look forward to a great game between 2 terrific teams. Also, hoping history doesn't repeat in what seems like I was a young man the last time the Dogs beat the Mocs.

Furman defenders were smashing Appleberry almost simultaneously with the QB handing him the ball. Even the great RB’s, like Walter Payton, Stanford Jennings, or Louis Ivory wouldn’t have been able to average more than Appleberry’s 2.5 yards/attempt that day against Furman’s Defense.

Aren't you leaving out one not so minor detail? No. See previous post and other post(s) in prior week SoCon thread OR you could watch the Chatt @ Furman game on Replay and know what you’re talking about instead of falling victim to the Chatt Hype & Imagination Machine (The CHIM).
On the other hand, if you’d like to discuss the difference-maker that QB Tyler Huff is for Furman when he plays, as he did not vs. Samford, we can jump into that discussion forthwith.

It's been quiet around here......
FUBeAR must be having a mental breakdown over his two teams playing this week, and has apparently picked up a third team Gardner-Webb and keeps hallucinating about vinegar-based barbeque sauce....can someone check on him? I'm afraid he's going to lose it when he goes to the concession stand at the game on Saturday and they put KC Masterpiece sauce on his BBQ Sandwich.

Nah, Won't even be KC Masterpiece, it'll be a tub of that Lloyd's stuff that comes swimming in sauce already that they warmed up in a crockpot.... NOTHING compares to Speedy's in Lexington!!! NOTHING!!! Except maybe some old timer with a with the local men's group at a church cooking it in the parking lot to raise money for a new organ!!! Those guys know!!!

The only things FUBeAR gets from concession stands be grain-based liquids - staying hydrated is critical.
KC Masterpiece? - y’know we still have the death penalty in Georgia. Believe using that nasty stuff on good chopped pork BBQ is listed as a capital crime.
Lloyd’s? - had no idea what it was. Looked it up. Seems as if it’s something that would be worked into a water boarding torture session to really up the pain & suffering. FUBeAR ain’t tryna eat that ish.
Speedy’s? - nah. If FUBeAR is gonna eat Lexington-style BBQ, he’s gonna go with the old reliable - Stamey’s in the Gate City, city of his birth (also home to NC A&T and UNCG (but who cares about the Spartans)) or he’s gonna drive out south of Lexington, toward High Rock Lake, thru the forests and fields…and between the trailer park to Cook’s BBQ in Lexington. https://maps.app.goo.gl/1iNknmH65KkXBBqK7?g_st=ic Cook's Barbecue … DANG! - just learned Cook’s may have closed down xbawlingx
Correct about the church parking lot BBQ, but FUBeAR has found Volunteer Fire Station fund-raising BBQ to be even a cut above that.
Picks will be available later…Consulting with a shaman and a dowser ‘bout this HomewoodHounds @ IndigenousPeopleShoesBirdTrains game and they are in complete disagreement. May have to bring in a certified chiromancer to mediate this one. Will get it resolved long before GA’s Senate election is concluded…definitely by this Sunday.

Predictions
Western Carolina at ETSU: SoCon's best pass offense against it's worst pass defense
VMI at Wofford: The Terriers finally found some bite to go with their bark and chew on a Roo toy
Samford at Chattanooga: SoCon GOTW #2 is a brawl with the nod eventually tipping towards the Mocs
Virginia-Lynchburg at The Citadel: The dawgs hold an extend practice masquerading as a game
Furman at Mercer: SoCon GOTW #1 - in this emerging rivalry all bets are off, the Bears are playing with a chip on their shoulder and punch just a little harder on offense
Rankings
1. Samford - you get top billing by being undefeated but...
2. Chatt - look out Samford, they have you in their sights
3t. Mercer - just a small step further up than....
3t. Furman - a slight step slower on O than the Bears
5. WCU - competitive but still finding some of their footing under the Bells
6. Wofford - finally figured out the forward pass thing
7. Citadel - some flashes but those were in a pan
8. ETSU - still struggling with the transition
9. VMI - the bright spot, they do lead the SoCon in opponents 4th down conversions, 5 for 13, 38.5%

Two things stood out reading your post...
1. Every SoCon team has 8 conference games, and most of those are BRAWLS. Each and every week, each and every team brings the heat. If you are #1 playing #6 (maybe not so much #7 or #8) you better show up!!! And #7 or #8 has the ability to beat a #3 or #4 at any time.
2. As for emerging rivalries, I feel like each and every week is a rivalry game. Sure some Rivalries are a little more heated than others, but the competitive nature of the league from top to bottom creates rivalries amongst EVERYONE!
Mocs123

The SoCon is a bit of an odd mix of privates, publics and service academies, and while I really think of it as a private school conference, the mix has managed to co-exhist for quite some time and the stability has really shown. Technically I guess Mercer is the new kid on the block, but they really fit in with what I see the SoCon as. ETSU and VMI are new as well, but not really, as they had previously been in the SoCon.
VMI has struggled this year. Injuries and their lack of a grad school didn't help, but top to bottom the SoCon is the strongest conference in the country in my opinion. Sure the "top" of the Big Sky or MVFC might be slightly better, but what about the middle or the bottom of most conferences. I mean ETSU, Wofford, and The Citadel have all been ranked near the bottom of the SoCon this year - who wants to play any of those teams - I mean they are still good football teams that can beat you.

The Cats pulled out a hard-fought home win over resurgent Woffy last week while the MountainMarauders took a week off to re-rig their masts after a tough road loss to those same AnkleSnappers. Even though the OceanlessOccupiers are limping through a season they’d like to forget, FUBeAR just has to think they are going to pull it together on Blue Ridge Border Battle / Heroes Day / Senior Day. Though they haven’t, they can play defense and they can run the ball…and that’s just enough.
FINAL SCORE: ETSU 31 - WCU 28

The FireConklinFeelGoodStory had a bad chapter last week as Woffy was competitive with an OK WCU Team, but looked impotent and collapsed as the game was on the line. VMI played 3 solid quarters of Defense last week and would have destroyed Samford on an 80 yard field. FG’s instead of TD’s ain’t gonna get it down vs. any of the SoCon GOT’s though and a Top-tier O was able to eventually exploit the 20 (5x(7-3)=20) points the Kangaroos left bouncing on the field. Woffy ain’t Samford and even though the PorchYappers will have the vocal support of the 63 people on The Verandah in SparkleCity, home field won’t be enough.
FINAL SCORE: VMI 33 - Wofford 24

BIG Game here between the 3rd & 4th PowerRanked SoCon GOT’s. Chatt has home field. The TrainBirds are confident their RB1 is ready-to-roll, but this Sammy D ain’t the Sammy D of prior years. No, they aren’t as good as Furman or Mercer on D, but they can get stops. FUBeAR thinks Samford is going to do what it takes to make QB Hutchinson beat them (or not), just as Furman did 2 weeks ago. Now, can Samford score against Chatt’s D? As quick as the ball comes out, as reasonably effective as their run game is, and with Chatt’s DB’s still tending to lose track of Retrievers from time to time, FUBeAR thinks they can.
Final Score: Samford 24 - Chattanooga 21

This should be a fun one. The BBQ Bowl is always a saucy, piss & vinegar throw down. Neither of these Teams is getting an At-Large bid and, surprisingly, the outcome of this game will have no impact on the conference championship, so it’s just pride and BBQ on the line. G-W is an excellent FCS Football Team. You don’t go toe-to-toe with Coastal Carolina, Liberty, and Marshall without talent. Sure, Mercer blew them out at home, but the Bears are/should be a top 5, at least Top 8, FCS Team. Campbell is huge and hugely talented - the Portal has been good to the HumpedHorses - but they really aren’t a great Football Team. In a wild, wood-fired battle in the pit…
FINAL SCORE: Gardner-Webb 45 - Campbell 44

NOT’s
5. WCU (2-4, 4-5)
6. Wofford (2-4, 2-7)

Straight from the horse’s mouth - everything you want to know about Playoffs selection, seeding, and bracketing.
A few things FUBeAR learned…Committee Chair is AD from Patriot League and PL is gonna be a 2 bid league this year if Fordham doesn’t lose to 3-6 Lafayette or 3-6 Colgate in the next 2 weeks…because they took another PL Team, Holy Cross (who will be seeded unless they lose to 3-6 Bryant or 2-7 Georgetown), to OT. Don’t ever tell FUBeAR, “there’s no such thing as a good loss” or “it doesn’t matter who you lose to; it’s only who you beat that counts.” And, no…the Chair didn’t actually say any of these things outright, but FUBeAR is an expert at listening between the lines…and he said ‘em. Mark FUBeAR’s words.
Anyway…it is a very informative listen and worth the 30 minutes if you care about FCS Playoffs.

No, Mercer should not definitely be in if they lose next week. 7 wins and their best win over Gardner-Webb is not something to brag about. A 7 win Bear team is squarely on the bubble with a 7 win Montana, 7 win UND, 7 win Rhode Island, Furman, etc.

Furman should be in now. 8-2 with wins over # 12 Mercer on road. and #7 Chattanooga …that’s enough. Only FCS loss with the ref call the SoCon apologized for and with our BACKUP QB. Our starting QB is a difference maker for us. Anyway.

I understand that reaction, but I have an answer:
yes, Mercer is below UTC and Furman. The jury is still out on Samford. So why is Mercer ranked on every FCS poll? Because they are clearly miles ahead of any other competition. The may have lost to 2 EXCELLENT teams, but they obliterate all others. And it’s never bad to have beaten a (potential) conference champion in G-Webb, no matter if other posters want to put GWebb down. GWebb was a point away from an FBS win (21-20 loss to Liberty) and another 4 point FBS loss (31-27 to Coastal Carolina).

When Samford goes full throttle they're going to be hard for anyone to stop.

You make great points here. I think the top four SoCon teams are all good to very good, but none of their resumes are all that impressive. I have an inkling that one of them is going to be on the outside looking in -- 8-3 isn't going to be a lock for the playoffs, given there really aren't any notable OOC wins.
You still trying to rationalize Mercer getting doubled up by Nooga?
Again, Mercer needs to actually beat someone.
Beating poopy teams and failing to beat good teams won’t cut it.
Fortunately, Mercer has two opportunities to end the regular season to prove themselves and earn their way into the playoffs.
Holy Cross has done two things Mercer has not done: 1) FBS win, 2) FCS top 25 win
Yeah, sorry, just disagree with you.
At some point you have to win a game, no matter how many "good losses" are on the resume.
Would be really interesting to see how the committee handles 7-4 teams like Mercer, Montaha, Idaho, Villanova, Rhode Island, et al.
Some are going to have to find their way in order to round out the field.
A 7-4 Mercer team (should they lose to Samford and Furman to end the season), will miss the playoffs, and rightfully so. I think you would agree, no?
Mercer hasn't beaten a team with a winning record and their best win has been against Gardner-Webb.
In their big conference test so far, they were doubled up by Chattanooga.

First of all, congrats to Samford for winning the SoCon (honk if you had Samford at the top of the SoCon heap). Saw that Mercer won the Lamb Bowl so congrats to them. Saw that Western Carolina beat ETSU on a last second FG (honk if you had ETSU devolve into a full fledged dumpster fire).
Wofford should just announce that their interim HC is the interim no more and say the job is his.
As far as ETSU is concerned, overrated is not a term I would use. These guys are a bunch of quitters. A year ago, they looked like a competently coached ball club. Why? Because Randy Sanders knew what a championship program looked like. Was really hoping beyond hope we would bag NDSU's OC (he knew what a championship program looks like, I don't remember his name) but we got someone who Furman was glad to see leave. Heck, if I was a Furman fan, I would write Scott Carter (ETSU's recently departed AD) a thank you note for taking Quarles off our hands.
What ETSU needs is a leadership overhaul not only in the football coaching staff but also the athletics department. I saw the difference a competent coach makes on a football team a year ago at ETSU and am seeing it now down the road in Knoxville. Ask the Tennessee fans how their AD and football HC hire is working out for them. In a perfect world, it would be really awesome if ETSU had a Danny White/Josh Heupel clone.

Siebert Stadium should be a total Orange Out on Saturday!

Does that mean the Bears are wearing all orange?

I am baffled. Thoroughly confused here.
You do know that Furman went into Mercer on Mercer's Homecoming and beat them right? And that Lamb hasn't been there in 3 years?
Furman 23- Mercer 13. Furman won. At Mercer. Are you aware of that score???

And yes, thank you ETSU for hiring our Furman guy

You’re right, Furman is already in. I think I meant to include Youngstown instead.
Chalupa, Thanks. Your posts seem well reasoned so I couldn't figure that one out..

If Furman loses to Wofford they are most definitely not in. In fact, they shouldn't be in if they lose to Wofford. They only way Wofford has a chance is if Ryan Ingram isn't redshirted. He's played his limit of games for a redshirt season.
