A little lighthearted fun at our schools past opponents. Was looking up some FCS history and ran across some rather 'amusing' (for lack of a better term) opponents teams have played. Example:

Dayton played the (or is it THE) "Ohio Deaf Mute Institute" 4 times b/w 1907-16.

In 1917 we played the 44th Aero Squadron twice. We owned them going 2-0!

In 1906 we took care of business by defeating the mighty Dayton YMCA team.

In 1918 we dispensed with the Naval Reserve.

1905 was a rough year for my Flyers, as we played that legendary, powerhouse high school team, ( as we all know ), Tippecanoe HS twice, and lost both games....

Man, I remember those early years just like they were yesterday....

In 1896 we played the Charleston YMCA, which I am guessing was the Citadel since it was not the Charleston YWCA:p

For a couple of years we played Bingham ( never heard of themxconfusedx )

and one year we played Riverside which I know is a Greer high school but it wasn't constructed until the 70s.

In 1918 we played the 2nd Development Regiment and the 48th infantry twice. I guess they didn't have much to do after the war.

AFter that it settled down into a more familiar schedule but we did play Oglethorpe, Mercer and Erskine, never knew any of those schools had football.

Montana has 6 games against "Anaconda" (1898-1932)

and are undefeated in 3 games against the "Butte Centervilles"

but haven't recovered from that shutout 6-0 loss to the "Ex-Collegians" in 1906 xlolx

In know UNH has had some strange opponents. I've seen the list (I'm sure Alum_in_Ct nows where it's listed). They played a number of military groups (Pease AFB and PNSY was/is close buy).

Just for everyone else, PNSY is the Portsmouth Navy Yard which is about 10 miles from UNH. Here are a few of the games York County is alluding to:

1910 -- USS Tennessee
1912 -- USS Washington
1914, 15 & 17 -- Fort McKinley
1917 -- USS Des Moines
1921 & 22 -- USMC Portsmouth

UNH also had a few games with Lowell Textile along with some with Lowell Tech. AFAIK, those schools merged along the way and became UMass-Lowell, our Hockey East compadre.

Interesting to see all the game pre 1968 with Bates, Bowdoin, Colby and Tufts.

And during 1895-1904 opponents included the Dover YMCA (Dover is the town to the north of Durham), Sanborn Seminary (???????), Burdett (????) and prep schools Exeter Academy, Andover Academy, Tilton School, Brewster Academy, etc.

We were 50-50 with Langley Field in the early 30's, and we tied with the Parris Island Marines in '32. We also tied with Camp Davis in '42.

We did squeak out a victory over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in 1932. That's a relief.

Interesting sidenote: Gallaudet University in DC is predominantly deaf. Obviously the players on the football team are deaf too. This school's football team was actually credited with inventing the huddle back in the 1890's to prevent the other team from stealing their signals.

Don't forget Montana's 0-2 record against Butte Business College, and 0-1 record against Butte high school, but then there is the 1-0 record in an 87-0 game against the Butte Ramblers.

At least travel was cheap back then, you only had ot go to Butte for 1/2 your season.

Griz also have a 4-1 record against eh Ft. Shaw Indian School, have played 2 different Ft. Lewis teams (1 a college, the other a base), Helena (MT) High School (0-1), a Helena semi-pro team, several other Military teams, and every Pac 10 team except Arizona State.

Yeah, in the very early 80's when we were just restarting the program we played the FSU JV, I believe twice. As was mentioned on another thread recently, we also played the Jacksonville Magnum Force (Jacksonville police department) and the Fort Benning Doughboys.

UNI has several local high schools from 100 years ago:

Cedar Falls (1-0), Waterloo (7-0), Reinbeck (1-0), Fairbank (1-0) seriously, Fairbank is a town of about 200 people? at least they won 54-0 in 1908.

We also beat Cedar Falls Seminary in 1896 and the Watreloo YMCA in 1898.

We were 1-1 against two WW I era army camps Camp Dodge and Camp Funston.

We have a winning record against the Iowa State Training School (school for juvenile delinquents) as well at 2-0-1.

Amazingly, we are 0-1-1 against Northern Colorado, though we haven't played since 1926.

Also, when I was in high school, I heard how our school had played LSU in a game. Sure enough, LSU beat Lake Charles High 48-0 in 1899...

In the first few decades of 'college footall' most 'traditional' schools played various types of 'special' schools or trade schools, as well as military units. The most famous were probably the Carlisle Indian School with Jim Thorpe and company. Considered in some circles as the national champions in 1912. Read the book, The Real All-Americans that came out earlier this year. Great insight and background regarding the creation of Carlisle and leading to its national showdown with Army in 1912, who had players like Eisenhower, MacArthur and Patton.
In the late 1800's Lehigh played Stevens Trade School a number of times, in 1890 an entity known as "College AC", in 1892 "Orange AC" and "Pittsburgh AC". These may have been the precursors to the colleges in those town officially fielding teams. In 1900 an entity known as "Homestead". In 1917, Lehigh played "US 7th Infantry" and the following year "Navy Yard" and "Marines" (distinct from "Navy").
Of course, we still have a "little" get together each year with an institution named after a French aristocrat...;)
