My pick goes to:

Portland State 45, Hawaii 20 (from 2000)

I about doubled over when I read the score

Also:

Delaware 21, Navy 17 (in 2003)

And my personal favorite:

NAU 24, Tulsa 20 (in 1987)

Despite Mississippi State's so-so team last year, I'd have to list Maine's win against them as one of the biggest I-AA wins, especially since it was an SEC team.

My "favorite" is Lehigh's win over Buffalo in 2002 37-28, but Buffalo is a horrible I-A team so it really doesn't count. (Colgate destroyed them the following year by something like 20 points, but they were up 30 at one point.)

Of teams that don't involve Lehigh, there were a few really impressive I-A wins that I remember. Villanova beating Temple, and don't forget UNH last year beating Rutgers handily.

But my favorite non-Lehigh I-A win has to be Holy Cross (yes, Holy Cross) beating Army 30-21 in... 2002. Yes, a 4-8 Crusader team knocked off an awful, awful Army team with 2 Ari Confessor returns for TDs.

I saw their 2001 win over Louisiana-Lafayette. Good win.

My favorite, especially since I was there with my brother while he filmed it for the TV station he was working for, is easily the 1996 Griz win over Oregon State, 35-14. He was filming up on the roof of the old Parker Stadium press box, and he repeatedly had to tell me to calm down, because I was so stoked I was bouncing the roof surface (and his videocam tripod) up and down when I was excitedly jumping up and down.

...and it wasn't even as close as the score seems to indicate. A great day to be a Griz fan, indeed.

Yes I am a homer. My favorite would be a series of years

1982 FU 28 South Carolina 23
1983 FU 17 Georgia Tech 14
1984 FU 34 NC State 30 (Bobby Lamb QB)
1985 FU 42 NC State 20 (Bobby Lamb QB)

Dick Sheridan was FU's coach. 1986 Dick Sheridan was NC State's coach. How did that happen? :)

Edit, not a win but we tied Ga Tech in 86 17-17.

 My 'favorite' too as that was my first year at UD and the first year (modern) that UD faced Navy. It was a perfect day.

Well, it wasn't a big win for I-AA, but my favorite was our win over La.-Monroe and over our former coach. After the last drive where we totally ran over them down the field and then kneeled on the ball, the whole McNeese crowd was chanting "I-AA, I-AA" as the time ran out.

My favorite is Northwestern State's win over TCU in 2001. Another huge win was over Southern Miss (I believe in 1984). Northwestern State has the most wins in I-AA over I-As, 10 at this point. Hopefully 11 after next weekend against Louisiana-Lafayette.

The Citadel's win over Arkansas,3-0,in 1993 I believe.

That was my favorite. ;)

The score was 10-3. Arkansas won't play Arkansas State and for a decade the reason given was that it was the policy of the Razorbacks to not play I-AA schools. On the day of ASU's first game back in I-A they played The Citadel. They fired Jack Crowe the next day. Who else has fired a coach after the first game of the season?

ASU has a few wins over Wake Forest:

1983 - 27-25
1989 - 15-10
1991 - 17-3
1995 - 24-22
1998 - 30-27
2000 - 20-16

In 1988 they tied 34-34 and kept Wake out of a bowl game.

The last-minute loss to Auburn (15-22) ranks up ther eas well, even though it was a loss. Nothing like hearing 85,000 fans stunned quiet for most of the game.

1996 -- Griz 35 Oregon State 14. I-AA team blows out a Pac 10 at their house. Awesome.

2000 -- Griz 45 Idaho 38. Okay okay, it's Idaho but this game meant alot to the Montana program.

Northwestern State over TCU in OT was not only a terrific win for NSU, but a very exciting game. If I remember correctly it went into overtime and Northwester blocked a TCU field goal that would have sent it to a second OT.

UNI over ISU 28-14 in 1993 has to be up there. UNI controlled it from the start.

Northwestern State over TCU by far.

Very depressing for the TCU fans that year. Beaten by you guys from I-AA, smoked by Tulane (who had over 40 points racked up on them 7 times that year) and lost to ECU, too..

Actually ASU also beat Wake in their first meeting in OT in '75 as well while both were in I-A. App also beat University of South Carolina and East Carolina that same year.

If we are going that far back, Columbia winning the Rose Bowl over Stanford in 1934 would be on the list, but I think games since I-AA was created are probably all we should look at if the topic is I-AA wins over I-A... ;).

The 1995 and 1998 games at Wake Forest featured some of the worst officiating I've ever seen. In 1995, the Demonized Deacons scored one TD on offensive pass interference, another when a guy went out of bounds before reaching the end zone and scored on a two-point conversion when Matt Stevens tackled the receiver at the one-yard line. I was sitting next to the ACC supervisor of officials in the press box that night and he was furious with his crew. I saw the game film of this one, besides seeing it live. Bad, bad, bad. In 1998, ASU recovered a clear fumble to end Wake Forest's final drive, but the official blew the play dead. It happened right in front of Jerry Moore, who went as nuts as I have ever seen this calm, collected coach ever go at an official. Wake Forest scored on that drive to send it to overtime, but Daniel Jeremiah led ASU to the win in the extra session.

The Auburn game was weird in that ASU absolutely dominated Auburn, but had enough mistakes in the kicking game and with a Karim Razzak fumble as he was crossing the goal line untouched for what would have been a TD to keep it close. Auburn made a comeback in the second half after changing QBs and won on a long pass in the final minute when they beat freshman cornerback L.J. Brooks, playing his first college game. Auburn was LUCKY to win that game. This game should have been an App BLOWOUT.

I consider the 10-3 win by The Citadel over Arkansas to be probably the most important in the history of I-AA games with I-As. This game probably got as much attention nationally as any of these upsets ever have and the fact that Jack Crowe got fired the next day by good, old Frank Broyles completed its place in I-AA lore. They were actually showing live highlights of this game on ABC as this upset unfolded. The Citadel went into the playoffs that year as the No. 1 ranked team. That was a great team, led by quarterback Jack Douglas.
