A few thoughts:
I liked that the gap between Montana and Idaho shrunk considerably but still kind of surprised to see Montana hanging in above Idaho.
I'm an NDSU homer and there's no way I can justify putting them in front of Weber St - that's a miss in the consensus.
Idaho set a new all-time high in the AGS Poll at #13 this week.

Was there an AGS poll before Idaho went FBS? Idaho was a good FCS team before they jumped.

They actually picked up 8 points from last week despite there being two less voters overall - but SEMO picked up almost 90 so they hopped them.
I still say the fact that the Campbell game is the best barometer we'll have for JSU until the SWAC title game or Celebration Bowl is big problem when it comes to where to rank them.

No - the AGS Poll started in 2004 and Idaho moved up in 1997 (I believe).

Haha - I think there are plenty of high school schools teams that could make the same claim right now. :)

Some Voters probably expected to see a little more from Jackson State, they are ranked in the top 10 in some polls
I think the D would keep them in games vs FCS top 10 though, to bad we’ll never get to see it

I don't have Tenn-Martin in my 25, have Elon
MSU and Weber swapped rankings
Griz ended up moving up a rank as I worked through the results despite losing. I'm ok with that since they were really evenly matched with my #2 team.
Idaho cracked my top 10.
The CAA has me confused. Hopefully they begin to separate more.

Hey - looks like most of y’all were darn fair with the ‘hit’ you applied to Mercer for putting on a ShiiteShow AssistedSuicideStart while an excellent Chattanooga Team was playing Flawless Football. Good to see it.
Haven’t seen that Chalupa guy’s ballot yet though. He probably put Morehead State at #24, just so he could show Mercer behind them @ #25.

You also have to consider who you beat. UC Davis has only beaten 3 teams and none of them are noteworthy. They won't have much of a chance these next two games either (Cal Poly and Idaho St). The last two (@Idaho and @Sac St) will give UC Davis a chance to prove they deserve to be in the top 25 and the playoffs for that matter.
Also, you can't think of it as the consensus is that there are 39 better teams - it's just everyone thought there were at least 25 better/more deserving teams. If we voted to #30 or #35 it's very possible UC Davis would be in there. They're in my 16 team "watch list" right now for teams that are ready to move up with an impressive win or if I have teams dropping out.

Watch out for the Commerce Lions. Big Southland Conference game in Commerce, Texas, this weekend as UIW visits the upstart Lions. UIW has one conference loss to SLU in Hammond. Commerce went to Hammond and beat SLU. Both teams have convincing wins over McNeese (doesn't everyone?), but Commerce's win over the Cowboys was in Lake Charles. This contest will answer a lot of questions or may create a second place logjam of teams in the SLC with one conference loss.

You have a sixteen team watch list, ready to move up (I presume into the Top 25?). That seems like a few teams too many, but to each their own. AGS voters didn't even have sixteen additional teams. ;)

I'm pretty generous with who I put in there. It usually fluctuates between 10-18 or so and not all of them get serious consideration that particular week but I look for teams with potential to move in based on an upcoming game or games. I don't put them in any particular order either (well, actually it's in alphabetical order). It's actually 17 teams now that I look at it - currently it's:
Abilene Christian Wildcats
Austin Peay Governors
Campbell Fighting Camels
Eastern Kentucky Colonels
Furman Paladins
Illinois State Redbirds
Merrimack Warriors
North Carolina Central Eagles
Northern Iowa Panthers
Penn Quakers
Princeton Tigers
St Francis Red Flash
St. Thomas Tommies
Stephen F Austin Lumberjacks
Texas A&M Commerce Lions
UC Davis Aggies
Villanova Wildcats
Youngstown State Penguins
The bright side is when I'm looking for teams under consideration towards the back end of my top 25 I very rarely have to look outside of those teams. The bad news is it's kind of a pain in the butt to maintain that every week.

Well that isn't necessarily the way to look at it. Nobody votes for 40 teams, only 25. So the question should be did every individual voter think there are 25 better teams. I do. Not necessarily all those listed to 35 this week because I didn't vote for many of them. I think people do consider who a team loses to and by how much, but there is a limit on the number of loses. Taking your reasoning to its extreme, a team who loses to the #1 though #11 team (that would be a heck of a schedule) all by only 1 point each should be probably be ranked since they could probably beat 70-80% of the rest of the field. That would be ridiculous to have an 0-11 team ranked. Again, that is an extreme example. But where do you draw the line? UC Davis is 3-4. That's a losing record albeit with an FBS. They ARE still on my watch list of about 5-10 teams outside my 25. I will probably seriously consider them again when/if they are 5-4 or better. I suspect they will end up 5-6 or 6-5 at best. Just my view on it.

I only have between 5-10 usually, at most. And they obviously come and go. I've shuffled some teams in and out of the 20-25 spots multiple times as they blow it or shine.

I don't necessarily have this long of a list; however, I do put in the results of every team ranked over the course of the season as part of the How They Fared (which is also a bit of a pain in the butt, but less of a pain than removing a team, then having to re-add them...and look back to update their metrics). At this point in the season, there really are no teams missing from the HTF that are all of the sudden going to jump into the rankings (or even voting). That said, I am sure I just jinxed this somehow.

Yeah, there's no way would I do that many teams outside of my top 25 for all the stuff you do in the HTF sheet. Thanks for doing that each week btw... I apparently need to spread rep around.

I am watching the ones in bold
Abilene Christian Wildcats-if they beat UND I might move them into my top 25
Austin Peay Governors - In my top 25
Campbell Fighting Camels - nope, don't get the allure
Eastern Kentucky Colonels - Had them in my top 25, they seem to be slipping
Furman Paladins - In my top 25
Illinois State Redbirds - When they beat the Bison, I will move them in the top 25
Merrimack Warriors - nope
North Carolina Central Eagles - nope
Northern Iowa Panthers - starting to play some decent football
Penn Quakers - Gonna have one Ivy in my top 25, Princeton is in now, we will see
Princeton Tigers
St Francis Red Flash - no freaking way
St. Thomas Tommies - Nope, don't like this conference, last decent team was San Diego and they were Meh
Stephen F Austin Lumberjacks - they could win out and finish 8-3
Texas A&M Commerce Lions - they will get dismantled by IWU but have 3 winnable games, they are on the radar
UC Davis Aggies - nope, got to beat somebody some time
Villanova Wildcats - not now
Youngstown State Penguins - I mean, anything is possible I suppose, not really considering them now but if they beat USD and are 5-3, I suppose they may be in play. Their lucky as **** win against WIU actually cost them points with me

Can we get you on selection committee? It is really a coin flip, the Hen's FBS win is better but W&M won the head to head but I still think Delaware is a better football team. Honestly, I should probably flip them, who knows, that loss to Elon is starting to look worse for W&M also.

Their lucky as **** win against WIU actually cost them points with me
I don't know how the game ends, but I am very confident Commerce won't be dismantled. We will know for sure soon, but I think Commerce should be favored personally.
Our resume isn't as strong as theirs overall as we lost to Sam Houston and Tennessee Tech, but on a game-by-game basis I believe we should be the favorites. Those losses happened while our dual threat stud QB was injured, and we definitely lack the depth that the average FCS team has. But for this game our top talent is back, and UIW has to come see us; there will be a home field advantage from the crowd, and if UIW gets a crowd forced penalty just once then our student section will be pumped and loud for the entire game. Many in Commerce did not expect to be in position year 1 to affect the playoff race, so the city and alums will show up for this. And if Commerce does win then it will be a big win for fundraising, and help us clear those financial FCS hurdles even faster.

Completely agree that UIW look's great offensively. But here are a few nuggets to watch for in this game. Commerce was a D2 football power until "1 Big Move" up, and we had a D2 national championship a few years ago. Our AD at the time tried to get Southland (and then WAC) games but couldn't. Back when Sam Houston ran the Southland and 2 years prior to our national championship our guys gave SHSU a real fight in Huntsville, and after that no one in our area would play us. They weren't scared, but admitted they had nothing to gain and much to lose. The payout would be similar for us or a different D2 Texas school, and we represented more risk than the other guys.
Now, UIW and Commerce rank 1 and 2 in most of the impactful conference categories.
Scoring Offense: UIW is 1, TAMUC is 2
Scoring Defense: Commerce is 1, UIW is 2
Rushing: UIW is top rushing offense, Commerce is top rushing defense
Passing Defense: Commerce is 1, UIW is 2
Offensive Efficiency: UIW is 1, Commerce is 2
Defensive Efficiency: Commerce is 1, UIW is 2
Commerce is #1 in interceptions, while UIW is #1 in sacks
3rd Down Offense UIW is #1, 3rd down Defense Commerce is #1
Some areas to watch: UIW is much more efficient at scoring TDs in the red zone, and Commerce has a very clear advantage at kicking FGs. If either side needs a FG late then UIW may be in trouble, but UIW may be able to punch it in at a high enough rate that a 4th quarter FG doesn't matter. Or, if Commerce loses too many starters to injury mid-game then there is definitely a drop off.

Nichols St looked pretty good when Scott was QB, If I remember correctly they actually benched them late last year but I have no idea why. I guess that explains why he got the heck out of there

Having faced both teams, I expect UIW will win this game by a couple of scores. Commerce beat us coming off their open date, with plenty of time to game plan having played an NAIA the week before that. We were on the back end of having played six straight, down three starters on our offensive line and without our starting QB. We lost by three. They hit us with stuff we hadn't seen on tape, scoring on a fluke play to start the game, and on a big play on the first play of the second half—plus had another scoring drive extended by a roughing the passer on a 3rd and long. We bogged down and came away empty on a couple of trips inside their 30. Commerce played well that night and deserved to win, we played like zombies and deserved to lose. Had we played the same way against UIW, we would have been blown out. Don't get me wrong, Commerce has a pretty good football team and having a great year in their first season in FCS, but UIW is better on both sides of the ball. Light years better on offense.

I get it’s not the best way to evaluate teams, but are we sure Holy Cross is better than W&M?
Holy Cross STRUGGLED with a bad Lafayette team, needing to score on 4th and goal from the 16 to win the game.
I understand that Lafayette has a good defense, but they have the 3rd lowest scoring offense in the FCS, and they had multiple 70+ yard drives on Holy Cross.

You’re not wrong. We should have absolutely lost this game.
Lots of things to clean up.
Conference road games can be tough and, as my associate sader87 said, there’s typically one “WTF” game each season. I’d like to chalk it up to this.
A convincing win against Fordham and this becomes old news.
For what it’s worth, I’d venture to guess that W&M would be favored over HC on a neutral field.

I can't believe Montana is actually underrated here. They lost in OT to the best team in their conference on the road with their backup QB taking major PT.
Then again I have Idaho in my top 10 - still without an FCS loss. Maybe they should be even higher.
Only other maybe controversial one is that I dropped UTM now that the Missouri State win is worth zilch. Hard to rationalize them, over, say Penn (who was my #27 or so).

No, I didn't miss it. Elon still has 1 more good win than UNH, and the Wildcats have had multiple iffy-to-bad performances: the NC Central debacle, a blowout loss to a bad FBS, and a close win over Stony Brook. Also, the Monmouth win isn't worth nearly as much as it was a couple weeks ago. UNH's overall resume is noticeably weaker than the 5 CAA teams that I ranked. New Hampshire has a chance to change that next couple weeks, of course.

I am liking this "being the underdog" role. Of course, that only works when more than one person believes you are the underdog.
Also, NDSU can earn their way back, and it starts this weekend. For the record, I completely disagree with the placement of NDSU (and a few other teams that are drastic overreaches) in this poll, but to each their own.

Hadn’t realized that NDSU really hasn’t beaten anyone of note.
Eked out a win at Indiana St and had a relatively close game at home against Youngstown.
So, yeah, their resume isn’t all that impressive. Their game against Illinois State, who I think is pretty good, should be revealing.

Yes, final scores matter. W&M is decidedly better than Elon but they had an unbelievable 2nd half to W&M’s worst half all season. It is what it is and only the final score matters. So…there’s no way I’d have Elon higher than UNH. UNH has, by far, the easiest schedule in the CAA but beating Elon is significant and beating UR will all but lock them in for the CAAF Title and playoff berth. I do think UR, URI and Maine will be good tests but I see UNH going 2-1 for that round.
