View Full Version : FCS v. FBS/I-AA v. I-A

I have read on a couple of boards now that the line between the two divisions has become more and more blurry in recent times. I am looking for some numbers to quantify these statements. I know FCS has 8 wins against FBS teams so far this year, but I have no idea how many games have been played so it doesn't mean much to me. Does anyone know a place where I can see FCS v. FBS records for say the past 10 years? I would very much appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

If I could get my freaking diaafootball.com site back up I'd put that on there. I did a check and from 1998 to last year there were 549 games so I can't list them all.
Year by Year Since 1998, FBS v FCS
Year W L T
1998 41 6 0
1999 44 7 0
2000 39 16 0
2001 49 16 0
2002 57 15 0
2003 60 10 0
2004 51 6 0
2005 52 2 0
2006 71 7 0
You can see that it looks like the gap is widening but the difference is the quality of wins. FCS teams have been smacking Pac 10, Big 10, and Big 12 teams in the mouth - and that just started happening in the last couple years. I think it started with UC Davis physically dominating Stanford and reached a new level with App State over Michigan. And it's not just that FCS teams are squeaking by, in a lot of cases, even in some of the losses, FCS teams have been smacking BCS teams around.

Those numbers can't really tell the whole story because you don't know where in the pack the FCS and FBS teams are. Lower-level FBS don't usually play FCS teams. I think if you look at the scores from the games carefully, you will see that the top 25% of the FCS teams are easily a match for the bottom 40% or so of FBS.

i take two things from these statistics...
first the number of games are going through the roof
and secondly the number of wins for fcs and more importantly the winning percentage for fcs has plummeted... as you can see

Like mentioned above, the lower half of the FBS does not schedule FCS teams often. Duke would NEVER schedule app state, wofford, or GSU because it would just be humiliating every year when they lose. Even top FBS schools don't play top FCS schools that often. WCU can schedule a 1-A FBS team in the drop of a hat, but it seems to take GSU 3 years in advance to get a game.

The yearly gross win/loss stats will never tell the true story of FBS vs. FCS because the huge majority of the matchups are decided before the games are even played.
As one mentioned earlier, none of the lower half of the FBS teams will ever come close to scheduling a known top 20 FCS team or perenial FCS powerhouse. Ask the ADs at App State, UNI, Youngstown St, Montana, Delaware, JMU, GSU, UMass, Furman, etc. Even FBS teams on the outer edge of the top 25 don't want to have anything to do with this FCS crowd. Any FCS team that is a consistent winner will automatically be disbarred from their schedules. The quick answer for the FCS AD is "we are not interested".
NDSU got lucky the last few years with scheduling of Central Michigan and Minnesota due to their relatively unknown status but that will not last long.
What you would love to see but never will is
App State, UNI, Youngstown St, Montana, Delaware, JMU, GSU, UMass
vs.
Buffalo, any directional Michigan, Utah State, any directional Louisiana, Rice, Toledo, San Jose St, etc.
You would see a huge number of FCS victories but those teams don't want you to know how far down the rung they really are.

I don't know if the number is going through the roof, but it should be going up with the arrival of the 12 game schedules.

Us true 1-AA teams, the ones WITH scholarships, actually can compete with the FBS.
Did you not watch the App state michigan game?
Citadel and Elon hung with Wisconsin and S Florida (both top ranked FBS teams at one point this season)
Last time GSU played UGA we hung more on them than all but one of the SEC teams that year. We outplayed them 3 qtrs of the game, but dropped the ball for 15 minutes and they pulled away.

JMU is playing at Duke to start next season.

Of course, directional Louisiana teams (Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana) are both FCS schools. Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana-Monroe haven't been "directional" for several years.
Personally, I don't know why anybody would love to see these games, the teams on the top line would kill any of the teams on the bottom line (except maybe Toledo), some of whom may be forceably reclassified to FCS after this season (if the NCAA actually follows through on the rules that went into effect in 2005).

I know the surge in victories was an attempt by some of the lower division I-A schools booking the I-AA schools in the early 2000's when they lost they quit scheduling them....quickly
I know for quite some time late 90's to the early 2000's the Gateway had a winning record vs the MAC. They still might but I quit keeping track.
