Wasn't this year the first time they hadn't made the playoffs since the late 1800's (OL FU, you were there)?

Actually last year was, but I really thought there would be some kind of transition period or something when he decided to step down.

I didn't expect him to step down so abruptly. They're saying Bobby Cox will stay on for one more year probably before he retires. John Smoltz probably only has another two years in him, and after that, the Braves dynasty will be gone except for Chipper Jones. Besides him, I don't think there's anyone who's been on the Braves for more than 5 years.

Wow. He's a great GM. The Yanks could sure use an eye for talent like his

One of the greatest general managers of all time. I'm very sad to see him go - though he'll still be in the organization as president.

Does that job do anything? If he could have a say in how much the Braves can spend (And let them spend more), that would be great!

How about this:
Leo Mazzone, the pitching coach for the Braves under Schuerholz from 1990-2005 (when the Braves' pitching was the best in baseball), was fired by the Orioles today after just two seasons. I guess the 30 run game may have had a bit to do with it.

Amazing how you can look like a genius when you've got guys named Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine, etc., pitching for you all those years, then suddenly when you have guys named Cabrera, etc., you don't look so hot.

I hate to see Schuerholz go as he was a very good GM, although lots of his trades seemed like he gave too much.

I agree, but I thought a lot of the trades (especially in the last five years) were in response to ownership trying to cut the budget for the Braves.

Given all the injuries the Orioles pitching staff incurred this year, NO ONE could have kept this team ERA under 5. Mazzone got fired because Andy McPhail is going to clean house. I'm actually surprised Mazzone stayed on after his buddy Sam Perlazzo got axed mid season. Perlazzo was the only reason Mazzone left the Braves.
Did I forget to mention I hate Peter Angelos?
