More conferences than not having a new champion - not that bold given how many conferences had close races last season.
CAA being the most interesting race - we've already discussed how wide-open it is.
SHSU and JSU facing "bumpy ride" - not unexpected.
Chatty a sleeper - old news.
SDSU as champion - the "boldest" prediction of the bunch but not THAT bold - the Jackrabbits just need to avoid a road game in Fargo during the playoffs.

Kerwin Bell shocks the Southern Conference

You can’t make to many bold predictions that are reasonable as long as North Dakota State is in town.

Assuming you mean by winning the SoCon. That would be quite a shock…a generational shock.

Absolutely - historically, might be the BOLDEST.

Reckon is there any other FCS Team that has been in a conference for over 46* years and NEVER won the Championship of that conference?

If not, reckon what Team would hold the ‘runner-up’ title to the Catamounts’ ‘achievement?’

May I mention that Hack Saw Haley didn’t even mention the Southern conference in his article, nor the Big Sky.

46 years in the Southern conference with no championship ? Geez, I had no clue about that. Seems like an Ivy team might compete with that streak? Guessing Brown

I think this needs an asterisk. 1983. Not sure how the tie was determined, but Furman was 6-0-1 and WCU was 6-0-1. They tied each other. So I'm scratching my head on how it was determined. And just FYI, WCU beat Furman in playoffs only to lose in the championship game.

You were right about the Ivy though…just the wrong Team.

The Columbia Lions top the Catamounts’ record of Conference futility for number of years in ‘drought’. They won their last Ivy League Championship in 1961.

But that’s not “never.”

Looking for “NEVER won the Conference Championship and in the Conference for more than 46 years.”

fubear is correct, due to a conference scheduling quark that year, Western did not play as many conference games as did Furman, there for, the Paladins took the championship that season, even though they payed to a tie during the regular season, and were both undefeated in conference play.

Big Sky, OVC, Southland, MEAC, and SWAC all ‘qualify’ - didn’t check others…found a Team that ‘tops’ WCU though…53 years in their Conference and 0 Championships

Mississippi Valley State has been in the SWAC since 1969 and has never won the SWAC (or SWAC East) Championship. They were close in 1984 (with Jerry Rice & Willie Totten), receiving an At-Large I-AA Playoff bid, but lost a game and the SWAC Title to Alcorn State.

good stuff!

Mississippi Valley St got beat by La Tech in first round game 66-19

La Tech proceeded to take out Alcorn St 44-21 the following week

It should be noted that in 1982, Delaware lead by FB Dan Reeder, dominated LaTech in a Ruston Louisiana mud bowl playoff game 17-0

SFA is not as good as advertised. They’ve got discipline issues, commit too many penalties on both sides of the ball. Their defense was stout and talented, but aren’t they losing Bert Morris, Myles Heard AND Rashad Nichols? Those were three of their top playmakers last year. And their offense goes quiet way too often. Two weeks in a row last season they went limp (v SHSU and JSU) late in the game and it cost them. Self isn’t a good QB and their line is losing a lot. Everyone seems to think they’re going to be a playoff team. My bold prediction is that they go 5-6 and are out of the convo before November.

So…a new bold prediction that is even bolder in some ways than your prior bold prediction, but not as bold in another way as East Carolina already has 4 SoCon Championships under their (also) purple belts…

The Pirates won the Southern Conference three times outright, and shared the championship once.

Alrighty…

…FUBeAR predicts all 9 SoCon Teams will go 4-4 in Conference Play and they will all lose 1 FBS (mostly SEC; all but CIT’s are P5) game, which means none will have more than 6 D1 wins, with Furman, ETSU, and The Citadel having a maximum of 5. Thus, once again, due to #NoWeeksOff and scheduling challenges, after a much-discussed labyrinthian tie-breaking process, only 1 SoCon Team will participate in the FCS MVFC/Big Sky Invitational Post-Season Football Tournament

Seeing there was only one other bold prediction on this thread, you must be talking about the East Carolina wins the Southern conference prediction?

from thin air?

Actually, Ive been praising Kerwin Bell for 10 years now

Ever since Jacksonville visited Newark
In recent years, I doubt East Carolina would have won the SoCon. Now, they might.

Assuming you mean by winning the SoCon. That would be quite a shock…a generational shock.

Ever since App State and Georgia Southern transitioned to the Sun Belt, every current SoCon team save Mercer and Western Carolina has a football title to their name. Mercer damn near came off that list last season if it was not for Mercer-ETSU's rendition of #NoSirReeNoSirRee. It would be really something if either Mercer or Western Carolina or both finally gets a football title this season (and this is coming from someone who is a fan of neither of these schools). Both of them have solid coaches who knows what a championship team looks like.

Although ineligible for the SoCon title and the FCS Playoffs in 2013, both Appy & GaSou were ‘in’ the SoCon, played a SoCon schedule, and their games counted in the standings. 2013 was the year Samford won their 1 and only SoCon Football Championship, splitting the title with Furman & Chattanooga.

Kerwin Bell shocks the Southern Conference

You can’t make to many bold predictions that are reasonable as long as North Dakota State is in town.

i think kerwin was in the running for LU job…we hired and fired schultz

You have WAY more faith in Conlin as a coach than I do. The fact that Colgate beat Fordham in last year's season finale to finish second in league is another indicator of the Rams inability to move forward until Conlin.

I think there's better odds the PL has only one team finish with a winning record, Holy Cross, than there is of a second bid. Lehigh, Bucknell and Georgetown all seem "well positioned" to win 2 or less games....

Which three teams (in your opinion) gets a bid? auto and at large... I don't see it without JUM.

Picking the boxed Trifecta correctly for most of the FCS conferences is a tall order. But I believe the CAA will have 3 teams in the playoffs this season, and the fact that JMU is gone may help make that happen. I see about 5 CAA teams finishing between 7-4 and 9-2 at the end of the regular season And I wouldn't rule any team out except perhaps Hampton

The bigger question is how will the SOCON get 3 teams in the playoff field. Now I think the SOCON has been screwed out of numerous playoff slots in recent years - no question several non-selected SOCON team were good enough to get in and probably could have won 1st round games. The problem is largely the parity that exists in the conference and I don't see any reason that will change in 2022. Another issue is that SOCON plays too many unwinnable pie-in-the-sky FBS games against SEC competition. And the SEC teams keep the score to a somewhat respectable level to keep them coming back for more. All of this tends to suppress win-loss records and keep a SOCON playoff quality team or two out of the playoffs each season. It's actually a great conference with a strong tradition of competition. I hope we see two SOCON teams in they playoffs this season.

So now for my bold prediction: The nine SOCON teams will finish the 2022 season in alphabetical order!

I think that's one of the reasons I could see Fordham getting an at-large. If they're able to get through the OOC slate at 3-2 (Wagner, Albany, Stony Brook, Ohio, Monmouth), and finish with an 8-3 record they'll be right in the mix. Fordham's offense should be good enough to win in spite of Conlin, who, I agree, isn't very good.

Can the The Citadel still use the word "The", now that Ohio State has copyrighted it? As far as my prediction I'm just having fun with it - I went to the SOCON website to be sure I knew all the conference teams - they were listed in Alphabetical order and it looked like a believable final 2022 standing based on 2021. As far as Citadel football, I'm sure they remain a challenging opponent for every FCS team they play. Actually, I see Citadel very much the way I see New Hampshire. We had a down year in 2021 also, but could never be taken for granted by FCS competition. Other than JMU's two season losses to Villanova and SHSU, we gave the Devil Duke Dogs their closest game in 2022. I suspect both team will be competing from conference championships and playoff slots again soon. And even though they didn't win a conference game in 2021, I would never write Wofford off either!

Well what do you propose the league does with Bucknell and Georgetown?

If they chose to, they'd tell Bucknell it has to offer 60 scholarships (not 52 or 54 or 55), and to give Georgetown its termination notice for failing to add scholarships after 10 years and a combined PL record of .198 to show for it.

They could also choose to address the systemic issue of recruiting by SAT scores which is bringing the entire league down in recruiting, and which is suffocating Georgetown's ability to compete in this league.

So they choose neither.

That’s why I said “if” but their home schedule is pretty soft. Maybe USD beats them but I don’t know who else can. I guess ISUr has a chance since SDSU doesn’t have their bye until the final week of the regular season.

If they do manage to get a seed they’ll have two bye weeks before their first playoff game. Which is when they’ll have their baffling home loss this year [emoji6]

ISUr will gladly oblige to fulfill their baffling home loss tendency this fall :D

Though we usually find a way to play up to them during our inconsistent years.

Craig Haley posted this article ranking teams SOS simply by opponent record .. not credible, but whatever. He did comment that my ISUr have the toughest road schedule in all of FCS this fall. And we open th eMVFC at home against highly ranked SIU. Fortunately, we play 2 easier teams in Valpo and EIU, after Wisk opener before the MVFC juggernaut starts. And we don't even play MoST or UND. And don't get WIU until final week.

I was modestly optimistic we could return to 2nd tier of MVFC this fall, and possibly make polayoffs. Looking harder at our schedule, it's going to be a very tall order with this schedule. Our new OC and QB will need to step up big time.

https://theanalyst.com/na/2022/06/fcs-schedules-are-not-built-the-same-the-strength-of-all-130-heading-into-the-2022-season/

37. Illinois State (MVFC) – .522 (70-64), 11

Notable: The Redbirds kick off the season at Wisconsin and have MVFC road dates at Northern Iowa, Indiana State, North Dakota State and South Dakota State. The .682 win percentage (45-21) of those five opponents is the highest among FCS road schedules.

No...we're going to win 4 (is my prediction). I'd love 8, but I don't see that happening currently. Check back in after a couple of years of our new coaching staff and we'll see if 8 is a possibility, but I don't think it is this year.

Essentially, two seasons ago, we won 1 game. Last season we won 2 games. This season, I predict we'll win 4 games. Probably UT-M, SUU, YSU, and INSU, although it's possible we drop one of those four and it's possible we get a win over ILSU (them and YSU are the two we beat last season).

Meanwhile, FCS and the SoCon welcome back Georgia Southern because they need to maintain the natural balance of old school triple option offense. 5&3 and maybe Ricky should get a bonus. But he's already gone 5-3 in the conference as the UNH head coach - in 2019. I see at least 2 teams in a tie for the CAA Championship at 6 & 2. Delaware "should" be there but their big question is will the QB returning from injury stay healthy - same question for UNH. Delaware has assembled a pretty impressive group of individual players, but at what point will they have a "team"? Coach Carty obviously can identify talent and devise an effective offensive strategy, but can he inspire, motivate and lead a team?

This UNH team is going to be a much tougher opponent than most AGS"ers" realize. The defense is talented, experienced and deep at every position. UNH fans generally, and quietly think Ricky Santos is going to fire the guys up and will be the difference between winning and losing close games. My "bold" prediction today? Monmouth is going to run into a buzz saw on September 1st when they play their first CAA conference game in Durham NH.

We had our a$$ handed to us by Syracuse and beaten soundly by NDSU and for some reason gave up against Towson. We were in every other game. I think we have a far easier schedule this year and I believe we have really reloaded this season with quality players. Does this mean a playoff bid?? Not sure. A 7 win season may be needed to keep the staff in place so a 7-8 win season is not out of the question with this schedule. Must stay healthy coming off an A$$ beating by Baylor. And we need to get over the Maine hurdle this year. Good years, bad years we always seem to lose to Maine.

McNeese is on its 4th coach in about 5 years and is coming off two consecutive losing seasons after a long stretch of having winning seasons. All of Southwest Louisiana is still recovering from back-to-back devastating hurricanes that targeted Lake Charles.

We haven't had a playoff win since we beat your Bobcats back in 2002 in Lake Charles (maybe some revenge factor for the Bobcats), and have had only a few playoff appearances since.

We have a new good coach, but what he found is a mess, and he runs an offense that the team is still learning, and no clear favorite at quarterback. I may be wrong, but I think our entire secondary is new as well.

Yesterday the Southland Conference released its preseason football teams. UIW ran away with accolades with 16 picks. McNeese had 6, and one of the Cowboys was a duplicate earning recognition for two positions.

Cowboy fans HOPE that the almost FIFTY NEW PLAYERS (many of whom came after the spring practice was over) are an upgrade over those who left, but even if they are, they still have to learn the new offense and defense schemes.

As Doc says, and as the preseason SLC picks show, we don't even know who we have or what they can do for the most part.

Many FCS fans still judge McNeese on its past and its reputation, and Cowboy Nation is proud. But we are definitely in rebuilding mode.

Win or lose, the Cowboys will give the Bobcats their best shot (pun intended), but playing the national runners-up from last season and a preseason top five team on their home field with thousands of rabid gold-clad Bobcat fans who have goals of a national championship is a mighty tall order for any team.

Note: See 100%Griz's Bold Prediction: Montana will play Montana State in the National Championship game.

Enough said.

Monmouth wins the CAA, UNH trashes Monmouth in league CAA opener and Albany has winning record and Delawre at the top of the heap. Not all these predictions will happen and as we know in the CAA there is a small margin between the haves and have nots.
Most Maine fans feel we have a chance as a playoff team winning 5 of our last 6 games and only losing 6 seniors to graduation. I have Maine at 7-4 this year. Loving our schedule with first Home CAA game with Nova and 2 weeks later Monmouth home for Homecoming.

I will admit I hate we open with you guys b/c you lost the last 8 games last year so road night game to start year under new coach who seems to bet it, does not bode well usually. But whatever, every game will have some type of meaning- But I think you catch my drift- Rather be playing an FBS or OOC to start. No game will be easy regardless but I know UNH is better than people will assume. However so are we. I am very intrigued to see how we match up. For those that thought the Big South was trash and MU will be like playing a Patriot team lowly, they will be in for a surprise. We have a lot of missing pieces off what was already a letdown season but this is when we usually thrive (sneaking up under the radar)..If our O Line is anything close to capable we will be one of the best offenses in The CAA but we lose 4 starters so it is a huge unknown.

Dude, Championship game, it will be a miracle if we get there much less challenged in it. SDSU is loaded, the will win the MVFC and be seeded higher than NDSU. We end up going there, getting thumped and SDSU wins their first Natty.

In all seriousness, SDSU's roster is loaded. Their coaching staff however is another story. If SDSU had NDSU's coaching staff & NDSU had SDSU's coaching staff (along with the development that comes with each coaching staff) SDSU would be the prohibitive favorite to win the natty this year. But instead we're all just wondering which game is going to be the Bunnies' headscratching loss this year that will send them on the road in the playoffs.

I don't think they're any more loaded than last year, but just as loaded. That's assuming Gronowski is back to the form he showed in the spring season.

I think they are more loaded. Big step up at the QB position for 2022, they lost Strong at RB but the guy replacing him is probably better. Most of their skill players are back. I don’t know what they lost on D and I think, if anything, that will be their Achilles heel.

Bold prediction for beyond 2022 season:

1) Following the 2022 season, EKU announces it will transition to FBS and join C-USA.
2) Seeing the writing on the wall, both Kennesaw St and N Alabama abandon ASUN aspirations and petition the OVC for membership, which is gladly granted by the OVC.
3) At the same time, Austin Peay applies to rejoin the OVC. The OVC graciously accepts their application and invites them back, with the condition that they are not eligible for the OVC football championship their first year back.
4) Central Arkansas, unwilling to grovel back to the SLC, also petitions the OVC, gaining admission. ASUN football vanishes like a fart in the wind. OVC grows to 10 football-playing schools, and then...
5) Gardner-Webb gives up on the Big South being a viable option for the future and contacts both the SoCon and the OVC to measure possible interests. The interest from the SoCon is lukewarm at best, but the OVC is excited about the prospects of having a footprint in North Carolina and issues an invitation, which GW accepts immediately.
6) Having momentum, the OVC enters into conversations with Western Illinois, but both parties decide to put any movement on hold for the time being.
7) Chuck South petitions the MEAC for football-only membership and is accepted, paving the way for an in-state rivalry with SC State. [On a side note, the Buccaneers have no plan to expand the seating capacity of their stadium, and have to play their home games against SC State at nearby Summerville High School to accommodate the visiting team's crowd.]
8) Campbell's conference future is on hold, as the Big South ceases football as a conference sport, leaving the Camels as an FCS independent temporarily.

Will UC Davis go past the first round or get a first round bye and get past it too, unlike Sac last season?

Is the rest of the PL as weak it has ever been?

Will there be any more hope of Georgetown making the playoffs, ever?

This would be great for the MEAC and OVC. If the Big South drops football, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the OVC absorb all Big South football teams under their conference banner.

The Patriot bad teams are really bad, but there good teams are Big Sky good without the hype

I've watched Monmouth (on TV) several times the last few years and I agree, it is an interesting match-up. Monmouth is no push over, and was a good gain for the CAA. UNH will go into the 2022 season with a big chip on its shoulder and want to make a statement from the start. With the exception of last season, UNH has been among the toughest FCS teams to beat at home for decades, we have to re-establish that in 2022. In 2019, Ricky Santos' season as acting head coach, we went 5-0 at home. When I say Monmouth is going to "run into a buzz saw" I don't necessarily think you'll be blown out of Wildcat Stadium. I mean you better be ready to match a high level of intensity I doubt you have often seen in the Big South.

Yeah I hear that and agree. A lot of matchups is psychology and the intensity you speak of (assuming talent levels are roughly close) and it simply does not favor us at all week 1 based on so many factors but mostly b/c UNH is coming off 3-8, new HC who knows the program, and hungry as fuk to prove they are not only a good CAA team but top FCS team. I def get it. Will regular students be back yet? I assume maybe a few but not most right? Either way I cannot fkin wait..A legit unknown on so many levels this year. I mean I respect the CAA but I watched Nova 3 x last year and I just do not see them as a legit top 10 team? So really excited to see a lot of things but notably how Monmouth matches up/belongs in the league. Seems like margi of error is very thin in CAA WHERE ay given week most teams can beat most other teams.. No truly awful teams and (after JMU) no teams that will just walk through everyone.. Should be fun.. Most of all I am excited to share a league with real fans.. was torture the last 5 years only Kennesaw had fans that showed up here or seemed to care at all..

Classes start on August 29th. The first home game there will be several thousand students - mainly Freshmen. Later in the season, about 75% disappear at half time, regardless of how close or good the game is. The 1st game can be an exception, most the Freshmen haven't figured out the party scene yet and may stay for the whole game. Nova looked very good vs. JMU, but the devil duke dogs hadn't hit stride yet. No one really has any clear idea what's going to happen in the CAA this season. Like you said - should be fun!

Are you considering going to the game in Durham, NH ?

I am def considering it for sure. Depends on some other things, mainly my job. I go to all home games and as many road as I can but the Big South made that very hard. Never been to UNH but the only problem is I prob have to work until at least 1 pm ad leaving NJ at 1:30 for a 7 PM game in NH just is not cool..

What makes this game so interesting is that it kicks off the season on a Thursday nite, if only we didn't have to watch it on Flosports. Having played at UNH in 17 and at our place in 18 on Thursday nite the students will be on campus and it will be a raucous crowd for sure. I have limited knowledge of the MU program but have certainly admired your enthusiasm for your team and look forward to our game on 10/15 which is always our largest crowd on Homecoming weekend. Hoping for a great game on Thursday and will probably root for your guys because it's UNH our rival, good luck to both teams.

FLOSPORTS is downright awful. We had the ESPN relationship so our broadcasts were awesome. I bought the Flo monthly once to check out a game I wanted to see and it was almost not watchable. camera moving. I am hoping I just caught a bad game.. I have been to Maine, I was there for Monmouth/Maine in 2007. It was the day APP State beat Michigan. We tailgated and listened to that game before going in (6 PM Maine/MU start) and we lost a nicely contested 21-14 affair. Nobody believes me but it must have bee 90 degrees in the sun for our tailgate but when we got back to the hotel we had a beer in the lot maybe around 11 pm and I swear it was 35 degrees. Was Labor Day weekend 2007. Best part about the trip was stopping on the side of the road and getting 2 cooked Lobsters, cole slaw, corn on the cob and like 3 Bud cans for about $30. That may be $100 now.

Maine lobsters and pricing have recently come back to earth as I paid $6/lb for softshell at the dock last week. Lobster rolls are still closer to $20each but that could change by October. If you are coming up for game on 10/15 will have to meet us in tailgating section for food and drink, right behind South end zone. You probably be a week to late for prime foilage in the Orono area but colors should be good on the trip north. Flo sports is always questionable on coverage on the $12/month is certainly no bargain either, hopefully CAA goes with ESPN plus whenever this contract expires.

And I thought the toxic stew Pukitt left behind at Big Brother was bad but then the previous head coaches at McNeese walked up to him and said "hold our beer." Heupel worked wonders in his first year in Knoxville and I hope the new coach works wonders at McNeese his first year.

FUBeAR appreciates your comments about the SoCon. They are objective and spot on. That’s as rare as (Caribbean?) hen’s teeth ‘round here.

But, FUBeAR needs a critical clarification. In your bold projection, do you have the Team from Charleston finishing 2nd using their preferred position in alpha lists…

1 - Chattanooga
2 - (The) Citadel
3 - ETSU
4 - Furman
5 - Mercer
6 - Samford
7 - VMI
8 - Western Carolina
9 - Wofford

… OR …

6th, where they should be listed if one accommodates their DEMAND that they are ALWAYS called THE Citadel?

1 - Chattanooga
2 - ETSU
3 - Furman
4 - Mercer
5 - Samford
6 - The Citadel
7 - VMI
8 - Western Carolina
9 - Wofford

But if we refer to the Chuckydogs as A Citadel, you get this:
