Tough mountain to climb...

SAM HOUSTON - McNEESE STATE SERIES
McNeese State leads the series with Sam Houston State with 20 victories to eight for the Bearkats. There has been one tie. Sam Houston State is 4-11 against the Cowboys in Lake Charles. Two of those victories came in the 1950s and one was in 1970. Since the Bearkats joined the Southland Conference, Sam Houston has won in Lake Charles only once, in 1999.

In its 92 years of college football, Sam Houston State is 44-66-3 against teams from Louisiana and 18-42-1 in contests played in the Pelican State. The Bearkats have won on their last two trips to Louisiana, defeating Northwestern State 30-20 and Southeastern Louisiana 28-23 last year

Best Sam could do with a loss to McN is 5-2 in SLC play. Sam would not get autobid unless McN found a few losses -- which I do not think they can find. Sam needs to finish 6-1 to get the autobid. A loss, the season is over...

#6 McNeese State looks to remain unbeaten

LAKE CHARLES--The sixth-ranked McNeese State Cowboys continue to roll after opening up Southland Conference play last week with a 41-20 win over Texas State on the road.

McNeese returns home this week to take on the Sam Houston St. Bearkats.

The Cowboys have won by at least 21-points in each game and four of their remaining six games will be at home.

“It was a good week for us last week,” Cowboys Head Coach Matt Viator said. “Anytime that you can win a game on the road in this conference is a plus.

I'd be a little more optimistic if I were you after watching UCA Thursday night. If they play like that they could put a whipping on an awful lot of FCS teams. Not that I hope your optimism pans out. I'm hoping McNeese wins and looks impressive doing it. But, after watching UCA for the first time, I don't think that 35-14 loss to the Bears makes the Bearkats look as "weak" as I thought it did. I know Texas State has problems but, good GRIEF. When Nicholls State put it on NW State, there were a lot of turnovers to get the snowball rolling, etc. That wasn't it with UCA. They just moved the ball at will...like they were playing against a pee wee team...and pretty much smothered what I thought was a pretty good Texas State offense after the first Bobcat drive.

Sam is better at putting pressure and that was key to game last week. Thought we could last week, but did not do as well. It's hard to do and it's impressive that Bryan Smith has 7.5. Chris Brown coming along and is getting better week to week...

Thoughts...

I'd of taken this 10-7 deficit with Kats getting ball to open second half without question. Kats have really gotten the Pokes to turnover at the right time to kill two drives and while 3rd down conversion issues have presented themselves again, those fumbles made it better...

Poullard having a great game thus far, averaging just shy of six yards per carry and you'll take that any day. Kats need to keep at it and try to get some points on the board and have the defense get a few 3rd down stops...

(On turnovers) We played really solid the first half, those turnovers were difference in game. If we play a little cleaner in some areas, we have a chance.

(On fight of Kats) Pleased with play outside of turnovers. McNeese has a fine football team, that's why they are leading the league. We have to make sure we don't get frustrated. We have a lot of games left that we can win.

(On Poullard) No question, really played great. We knew we had to run the ball at them to offset some of their pass rush.

(On Wells) He played real well. Takes guts to go over the middle against a very physical McNeese team.

(On next week) There's no question, we're going to have a good season, we'll get it started next week.
