You might have to go back to the Jesse Branch days. I can think of a few years recently where we have beaten one ranked team, but I can't remember any recent years when we have beaten more than one.

Missouri State used offensive fireworks to overcome a second quarter that saw it give up 28 points in 7 minutes, 55 seconds, and defeat No. 23-ranked Illinois State 58-41 on Saturday afternoon at Plaster Sports Complex.

It was the second-most points scored by Missouri State in a Gateway Conference game.

The Bears (4-2 overall, 1-1 Gateway Conference) steamrolled to a 17-0 lead, but saw it disappear to a 28-24 halftime deficit in a cloud of errors and Illinois State trickery.

Illinois State (2-4, 0-2) led 34-31 after a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Luke Drone with 4:21 left in the third quarter. But the Bears took control from there, scoring on back-to-back drives on a 17-yard run by Gerald Davis and a 10-yard pass from Cody Kirby to Clay Harbour to go up 45-34 at the end of the third quarter.

In between those scoring drives, the much-maligned Bears' defense made a stop when Chris Farrar tipped an Illinois State pass into the hands of linebacker Jeron Poole.

Kirby tacked on a 65-yard touchdown pass to Eric Davis to give the Bears a 51-34 lead with 11:43 left in the game.

Kirby passed for 277 yards and four touchdowns and Gerald Davis rushed for 123 yards on 23 carries and three scores.

The Bears rolled to 524 yards of total offense and converted all five of their fourth-down tries.

Missouri State plays at Western Illinois next Saturday. The Leathernecks are 4-2 and 1-0.
