I'm not really that into our mascot, to be honest. Human nicknames/mascots don't do it for me. There's something I've always found odd and uninspiring about any mascot that is basically a person wearing a person costume. Animals are much better.

Gunrock, the Aggie mascot, is a huggable, furry blue mustang, but the original Gunrock was a Thoroughbred of blueblood heritage — by virtue of both his racehorse pedigree and the wealthy sporting elite who owned him before he came to UC Davis.

Gunrock was born and bred for the track, but the golden chestnut stallion with white face and legs would make his mark on the horse world — with the help of UC Davis breeding expertise — as a military stud.

Born in Britain in 1914, Gunrock was the offspring of English Triple Crown winner Rock Sand and race mare Gunfire, which gave him bloodlines similar to the legendary racehorse Man O’ War.

Gunrock was bred by U.S. telegraph company mogul Clarence Mackay and would be owned by a series of other millionaire race enthusiasts, including Standard Oil heir Herbert Pratt, who raced him in 1917, and financier August Belmont Jr., who bred Man O’ War and built the Belmont Park racetrack. It was Belmont — such an avid patriot that he volunteered at age 65 to help the Army in World War I — who donated Gunrock and many other horses to the Cavalry Remount Service, according to a 1923 Los Angeles Times article. The Cavalry placed hundreds of breeding horses and mules on select private farms and land-grant colleges nationwide with the aim of improving horse stocks.

During his 1921–31 stay at UC Davis, Gunrock was bred with 476 mares, some of them from the university herd and the rest from Northern California farms.

The Cavalry bought many of the Remount Service foals for military use, but many others led civilian lives, whether as race, show, rodeo, ranch or pleasure horses.

Patricia Erigero ’71, owner of the Thoroughbred Heritage site tbheritage.com, as a teenager owned a champion show horse, Bay Sands, that descended from Gunrock — “the product of many generations of breeding at UC Davis.”

Phil Livingston, co-author of War Horse: Mounting the Cavalry with America’s Finest Horses, said the Cavalry Remount Service, which existed until 1948, made a lasting impact on the horse industry, improving breed lines with the help of UC Davis and other breeders, and advancing husbandry and veterinary care.

Sixty percent of registered horses now descend from Remount Service sires, he said. “Without it, we wouldn’t have the horses we have today.”

Eh, I don't know, a person in a person suit just doesn't get me going in a rah-rah kind of way. That's all I mean. I have no objection to the nickname/mascot, and the history/tradition behind it is certainly a good enough reason to keep it. Plus I would hate to see the Minuteman Marching Band have to go by another name. But I just tend to like mascots like Ducks, Badgers, Gophers, etc. better. I like big, doofy-looking animal costumes. I tend to prefer superficiality when it comes to these kinds of things, I guess. No offense intended to those who take it more seriously, though. If you find the Minuteman inspiring, I think that's great. More power to you.

Why I like the idea of Yosef - the name, which is hillbilly slang for "yourself," represents everybody in the Appalachian family. Yosef embodies what's good about mountain folk, while poking a little fun at the same time. He owns a very cool Kentucky long rifle, recently donated to the school by boosters. He owns (more or less, given the lopsided history of the ASU-WCU rivalry) his own moonshine jug. His name sounds Jewish, and he looks like famous Jew Theodor Herzl...

I'm not wild about the gray beard, which looks like a giant work glove attached to his chin, with misshapen fingers all over his chest. I kinda wish he'd remained black-headed. And taller. I certainly hope the Yosef costume is never again donned by a 5'3" female cheerleader.

Apparently, the burly torso belonging to the ill-fated "Blosef" (circa 1998) got trashed with the rest of the terrible costume, so we're stuck with a so-so looking head (gray beard aside) and a torso that looks like a mattress pad stuffed under an XXXL flannel shirt. Seriously, no mountain man ought to have that kind of lumpy, back-fat-ridden body.

The new Steelers mascot might be a good model. It looks pretty stupid from the neck up, but - with a few adjustments to the body - you might have a decent-looking mountaineer.

Now, that part doesn't bother me one bit. I can certainly see the resemblance, thanks in part to ASU's colors being black and gold.

I really like the dissonance achieved with the left-to-right motion of the block text and the right-to-left motion of the man-in-the-mountain.

I also like the concept of a man's face in a mountain. It reminds me of Grandfather Mountain, near campus, which is named for its resemblance to a sleeping, bearded man. I think that's part of the appeal, that the mountaineer is carved into the side of a mountain. The designer in me really appreciates that kind of ingenuity. It's a little heady, though, so I can understand why so many garden-variety fans aren't impressed by it (or even outright dislike it.)

Also, the logo gives lots of versatility - you can choose to use the block letters with the man-in-the-mountain, the block letters with just the mountain, no face (one of my favorite variations, though underused), the mountaineer face alone, the block letters alone, etc. The word "mountaineers" under "Appalachian" is interchangeable with "Football," "Basketball," "Alumni," "Athletics," you name it (I have a spoof version on my computer that says "dodgeball."

That level of versatility doesn't come with any of ASU's other branding elements.

Yup, that's true. They were originally the Cleveland Rams and when they were founded in 1936 they took their name from Fordham. This fact is confirmed by the St. Louis Rams' website.
