View Full Version : D-Backs are the Rodney Dangerfield of MLB

They get no respect!
Yet, here they are, up 1-0 on the mighty Cubbies, who everybody and their DAUGHTER predicted would win this series....Once again the Cubs questionable bullpen failed them miserably, and we didn't even GET to Dempster. xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx
Zambrano pitched a hell of a game, and his teammates pissed it down their leg....
But that's ok, I hope the rest of the teams/writers/experts continue to understimate the lowly D-Backs....no experience, too much youth, no starting pitching (beyond Webb, of course), horrible batting average (29th in MLB), no pop, buncha rookies, soft division, etc., etc., etc. What people apparently forget is that the D-Backs LED MLB in 1-run victories (over 30), so they're used to pressure. They led MLB in Sac Flies, so they know how to manufacture runs. They LED MLB in pinch-hit homeruns this year, with 7. But they've also hit 20+ more home runs than the big bad Cubbies! We've got about eight or nine guys (it seems) with 12+ homers on the roster---Young, Byrnes, Reynolds, Clark, Drew, Snyder, Jackson, Owings (just kidding, seeing if anybody is paying attention).... their motto is Anybody, Anytime. In other words, you never know where the damage is gonna come from, so you can't overlook anybody.
xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx
Anybody on the East Coast happen to catch the two BOMBS hit by those soft-hittin' rookies, Drew and Reynolds? WHO? xconfusedx xconfusedx xconfusedx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx

So these Diamondbacks, you call them. Do they play in the Pacific Coast League? How did they do against the Salt Lake Bees this year? ;) xsmiley_wix

Come on, if Arizona was as dominant as you make them out to be, wouldn't they have done a little better than winning the NL West by one game? Heck, they were only 1 game better than the NL East winner and the Wild Card winner. Is Arizona good? Of course they are, but they aren't the Big Red Machine of the mid 70's either. People pick the Cubs because people like the Cubs - after not winning a title in 99 years, people tend to root for a team like that. No matter who the Cubs play, most of the nation will want the Cubs to win. That's just baseball.
dbackjon
October 4th, 2007, 10:43 AM
It is not just who they are rooting for - if people want to root for pathetic losers like the Cubs, fine. But just about every "expert" is picking the Cubs to win. Experts have been picking the Dbacks to fade all year. Two weeks ago, Tony Gwynn did a big piece about how the Padres were the best team in the NL, and the Dbacks wouldn't even make the playoffs....

Even the experts can be swayed by love for the Cubs. And in Gwynn's defense, it's not like he was all that far off - again, the D-backs were only one game better than the Padres and the Rockies - they didn't exactly coast into the postseason.

They rested the starters last two games. If needed be, they could have taken two or three games in Colorado :D.
They won when needed. And the only reason the Scrubs MADE the playoffs is that they play in a pathetic division.

Screw the D'Backs. They get no love for many reasons:
1) East Coast Bias (Actually, I don't subscribe to this theory, but it always riles sports fans west of the Rockies.)
2) Ugly-a$$ uniforms.... Red? Why not? Nobody else is wearing red in the National League! We'll be so friggin' unique!. Oh, and who else put's their unofficial nickname on their jerseys? "Phils?" "Yanks?" "ChiSox?" "Nats?" Nope. The A's stopped doing it over 20 years go.
3) They play in an airplane hangar: That's what Chase Field looks like as you drive out I-10 West on your way to L.A. That, and it's really nothing special. Until this year, they never opened the roof, no matter how nice the weather
4) Idiot fans who get up to grab some cotton candy, even though the bases are loaded and Eric Byrnes is at the plate! The ushers sill hold signs asking people not to walk to their seats until there's a break in action.
5) They get no love from their home-town fan base. They were 12th in the league in attendance this year. If they get no love at home, why should they expect it from the national media?
There.... I'm done. xthumbsupx

I looked at this match-up and picked the D-backs...
Here's why:
1) Cub factor (this can't be ignored)
2) D-backs hit for more power (check that...!!!! it's true) more doubles more homers
3) Younger faster hungry... xbowx this can't be measured but matters
4) to dumb to know they shouldn't win (Hey, they said it not me)

Counter-Counterpoints:
1) I got nothing here
2) Sedona Red? That's like Strawberry Shortcake arguing her outfit is "lightish red" as opposed to pink. And last I checked, "San Francisco" has the same number of letters as "Diamondbacks," plus a space. The Giants manage to get that on their uniforms.
3) The presence of the pool only perpetuates the stereotype that Phoenix sports fans don't really give a crap about their teams.
4) Those idiot fans of other teams are, strangely enough, wearing D'Backs gear.
5) Yes, they drew 225,000 more, but that only illustrates the point that they draw "really *****y" when they suck. When they're good, their attendance is simply "*****y."

Excellent point. Remember when it was 1 million? Until the mid 90's, the Expos attendance stayed steady around 1 Mil. The problem was the benchmark was raised and the Expos attendance didn't rise with the rest of baseball. When they moved, I found that baseball fans out west, who weren't familiar the Expos, refused to believe that at one time, it was a healthy, popular franchise in Montreal.

The Expos did about 2.5 million in a couple of years during the 1980s.
Baseball was taking off in Montreal before greed and strikes killed it.

If by greed you mean an owner who was a complete idiot and totally alienated his fan base...then you are most correct...xbowx
The Expos could have/should have been a big success story...but the owner (I forgot his name) severly p'ed off his fans to the point they refused to come back...xnonono2x

Do you mean the last owner, Jeffery Loria? There's a lot of evidence to support the argument that Loria deliberitely pissed off the fanbase and drove them away, while in collusion with MLB, to devalue the shares of his limited partners, thus giving him control of the club and precipitating their relocation.
MLB, specifically Bud Selig, has blood on their hands with respect to the destruction of National League franchise in Montreal.
Incidently, what Loria did is only possible in MLB. None of the other major sports leagues enjoy the level of anti-trust exemption that they do, which allowed this.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. The owner's name is Jeff Loria, who is now in the process of destroying baseball in Miami.

Are people out West just always paranoid???? I just checked the SI website and their "experts" actually were pretty split before the series - 6 said the Diamondbacks were going to win and 5 said the Cubs were going to win. Granted, they all weren't worshipping at the altar of the Diamondbacks, but that's a little different than your contention that every expet was picking the Cubs. It's hard to say because I'm a Cards fan.
I can't speak for the rest of the Divison, but LaRussa managed the Cardinals out of 2 other World Series births the last 13 years.

This was the original intent of Jerry Colangelo. Remember the "Babybacks"? He couldn't wait that long, however, and ended up going the veteran route to get his first WS ring....
