They looked evenly matched and there were mistakes on both sides with NU making one mistake too many at the end.

Let me be one of the first GSU fans to congratulate Northeastern today. Their new quarterback is the real deal. We were fortunate to win this game. Northeastern could not stop our running (476 rushing yards) and we had a hell of a time stopping Northeastern's passing and at times running.

If you tell me we only make Northeastern punt twice in the entire game and we win I would not have believed it.

I said earlier this week that this game would be very close and I would not be surprised if Northeastern won. Nothing I saw today showed me anything but that Northeastern is a good football team.

We have a good bit to work on obviously. Our defense in my opinion today was very poor. And as many of you point out our passing game is not very good. Somehow we completed 2 4th down passes to get the game into OT.

My feeling is that since we are not really a passing team then we don't get to really practice against a good passing offense so when we face a strong passer we struggle.

Even if we had lost however we gained so much more from this game than from playing say Johnson C. Smith at home.

I look forward to Northeastern's visit to Statesboro next year.

UNH_Alum_In_CT
September 3rd, 2005, 05:59 PM
I like to think that I'm a pretty objective person and poster. Don't think you can say I've ever been on here cheerleading nor taunting. But I will comment when people refuse to recognize how deep and strong the A-10 really is. I don't see enough games/teams from other conferences to ever talk smack about A-10 superiority. But I do see enough A-10 games/teams to know that last year's mid-pack (Hofstra, UMass, Northeastern, Maine and even Villanova) was a very fine line worse than the playoff teams like most recent years. To just arbitrarily claim a mid-pack team can't compete is not demonstrating knowledge.

UNH was very, very lucky to have beaten Hofstra and Northeastern last year and may have played their best game of the year to beat Villanova in PA. Maybe UNH had that little "something, something" that makes teams winners and the other's mid-pack, but to just dismiss a team because of a 6-5 or 5-6 record is foolish.

great game . . . GSU fan here

All we heard going in is that the game would be decided by a td or less, and everybody was right. Although I was right about the spread, I was wrong about how it would play out. Looks like NE is the real deal, and it looks as though GSU has a lot to work on on D and special teams.

NU might be a playoff team this year if they can close games. Their playcalling and offensive scheme are impressive. Orio played better than you can expect a frosh to play, and I think Hager knows what he's doing. They are on a level with NHU last year, despite wearing themsleves out by OT. They dominated the pace of the game and made as few mistakes as a team can make.

GSU made a ton of mistakes--witness NU's first two scores and the kickoff for a TD. Still, our ground game churned out way more yards than I expected, especially against a team that--as A-10 homers point out--stymied Navy and Rhode Island last year. That said, if we can't play better D we'll be a borderline playoff contender this year. The big plays at gut check time says a lot about this team, but if we can't get our defensive players to play bigger than thye are we will not be a NC contender this year.

Allright, hope that makes sense despite being composed under the influence of miller lite #8 since game time. Just a sensible GSU fan's perspective.

See, there's the problem. They're not. You said every GSU fan over 19 knew it was tough at Parsons, but it sounds like you don't believe it 100%. NU will not be in contention for the playoffs, trust me. But, they will always be tough at Parsons.

89Hen

That's a preseason opinion. Let's see how it plays out. Too soon to start with the absolutes, even though your point is they play tough at home only.
They can play tough home and away, but they will not be a factor in the A10 other than the spoiler roll. Take it to the bank.

GSUAlumniEagle

This game can't be used to compare the SoCon and the A10.

It was the first game for a lot of players, and it was also on the road. If Northeastern can come to Paulson, and play the game close or win... then you can give the A10 your props.

I'm not saying the A10 isn't strong from top to bottom. I'd be an idiot to say such a thing. But you can't base your argument just by pointing at this one game.

89Hen

Could be that GSU just struggles on the road early against A10 teams. See 2002. OR could be that we're correct. What is FU's record against A10 teams in the playoffs the last ten years or so? How about ASU? Didn't UNH handle GSU in Statesboro last year? :p :p :p :p

pete4256

One would be a moron if he didn't look at the numbers and know that NU was tough at home.

You Delaware guys are the ones who harped on it--I think most of us GSU fans admitted it'd be close. We expected defense and turnovers to keep it close. Who knew? Maybe time will show NU to be a medicore team, but their offensive scheme looked great. You can't tell much about their defense from how they played vs. GSU (fact, not smack Ralph). But unless you watched the whole game, what's the point of calling NU a crap team? You've spent weeks building them up and now you want to stress their mediocrity? You can't have your cake . . .

Oh, and I'm sorry about the New Hampshire blunder. That IS annoying (the Comcast guy referred to us as Georgia State less than a minute into the game).

Congrats to both teams on a very exciting game.

It appears that NU has recovered well from the turmoil resulting from the defection of coach Brown - and his lack of integrity may have been a blessing in disguise.

Hager seems to be a good coach, and time rather than Mr. Chicken's esteemed opinion will determine whether NU is indeed a mid-pack team.

See, there's the problem. They're not. You said every GSU fan over 19 knew it was tough at Parsons, but it sounds like you don't believe it 100%. NU will not be in contention for the playoffs, trust me. But, they will always be tough at Parsons.

We have played at much worse places than Parsons. It's not a grand facility by any stretch of the imagination, but not near as bad as some others. After seeing both, FIU's facility has Parsons beat for the title of "bad" place to play by a mile and a half.

Seems like many "top tier" A-10 teams look like "middle of the pack" when they play at Parsons. Before this game NU was 20-4 in their last 24 home games.

We'll have a fair comparison when they travel to GSU next season. Anyone wanna lay some $$$$$ down that GSU will beat them by only 3 points?

He's completed a couple of passes and he looks poised. His timing is excellent. Well now he has just made a bonehead play. So much for compliments.

I know Foster can't throw as well as I can (by which I mean he's terrible), but I'd still take him over Owens any day. I saw Owens in high school (same region, GSU commit) and Foster has breakaway speed that Owens ain't got.

Tough loss for NU. Any way that you can get a W under the belt is a good way, I say.

Hey great game GSU. That was probably the best game I have ever watched. I think GSU and NU have a great respect for one another. Your fans were great. I would have liked a win but it was a hard fought game. Many people say that GSU is unclassy but I saw nothing but a great team out there. It looked like both of our QB questions were answered today. I think we both need help on D though. Look forward to next year.

I was the (I believe) lone AGS pollster that gave GSU a #1 vote in the preseason poll. After getting to watch this one on TV there is no way I'm doing that again anytime soon. GSU's defense was atrocious. Northeastern isn't going to be much more than a 9th or 10th place team in an 12 team A10 conference, but you would've thought they were the second coming of the St Louis Rams offense from a few years ago. And for all this banter about how GSU speed is light years ahead of the rest of IAA (at least boasted by a few people) I just never see it on the field - apparently track speed doesn't always equal field speed. And how could Northeastern, not an option team, run the option so successfully during this game against a defense from one of the best option schools in the classification? Northeastern being able to turn the corner so often on the option was just astounding to me. Hey, GSU got the win, which is big, and they'll probably roll through the not-very-deep SoCon to a probably high playoff seed, but they'll have to get a lot better to avoid losing at home in the playoffs for a 3rd consecutive time in as many appearances.

Well, thanks for sharing. For some reason all this talk about how bad visiting teams play in Parson's Dump seems to have been forgotten. Did you not notice the 500+ yrds of total offense by the Eagles? Did you not take into consideration the fact of a brand-new DL, QB, LB and opening on the road? Nope, obviously not.

Gee, I hope GS get lucky with their schedule in the SoCon. Its sooooo weak compared to the mighty a-10 with their horrible NU patsy team that will finish 10th in a 12 team division. :deadhorse

Nope, I took all this in - just like the 400+ yards of offense that Northeastern put up on the vaunted GSU "D", as well as another special teams TD despite the assured team speed advantage of GSU. And NU is not a patsy (they're not URI or Towson for isntance), but unfortunately for them they do play in a very deep conference, and I've always said that the SoCon, for all it's plusses, is just not very deep. There are better teams than Northeastern in the A10, no smack at NE here, and GSU, for all it's offensive wonders and 500+ yards, still had to convert two 4th downs on that last drive just to go to overtime. Call it like you see it, but GSU has a long way to go if they're going to reverse the dissappointments of the last 2-3 years.

I just don't see who they will be above - they still have Youngstown St (probable W) and NW St (almost certain L) on the road on the OOC, and then in conference they're at UMass, they're at UNH, and at nova, and they get W&M and Maine at home. Heck, they're at URI and they have historically had trouble with them. I just don't see the easy games for them in this schedule. They'll have 2 losses OOC at least, and I see them losing the 3 games on the road I list above - that's 5 losses already. And they would still have the likes of Maine and Hofstra at home. Their defense got run over today, and they couldn't defend the pass when they had to against a team that isn't particularly skilled at passing. While today was nice for them, it could very well be a long season for NE - I still see them finishing behind UNH, UMass, Maine, and Hofstra, just in their half of the A10 alone. To be 5th in the conference they would almost have to be 2nd in the probably weaker half of the A10 - I just don't see it.

GSU deserves a lot of credit for winning the game period... but even more for making those 4th down conversions in the passing game to win in the last minute. All A10 fans know that N'eastern is a handful at home and any win there is a good win. I really don't know what you can take from the game for either squad... it will take a few more games by each before things begin to sort themselves out. NU could be a middle of the pack team or they could be the annual A10 sleeper. GSU could be a 1AA title threat or not even make the playoffs... time will tell... but it's way too early to determine anything yet. However.... a couple of observations can be made after that game...

NU's Fr QB Orio looks like a very good one. NU appaears to be set at the QB position for four years.

GSU's pass offense will have to improve... a lot... as they will see opponents later on that will slow down their running game.

Good game for NU and GSU.

Is GSU not as good as predicted, or is NU better than expected??

peace

igo4uni

1. Yes
2. Yes......

It was my understanding that this is in fact a "rebuilding year" at GSU. IF our secondary plays up to their advertised "potential", AND IF our QB learns to pass, even short passes, (and stays healthy), we should do ok.

The good news is that this was the first game of the season, and our inexperienced folks got to make mistakes, hopefully learn from them, and still sneak out of Boston with a win. Ugly win, but win, none the less.

If past history is any indication I think our Eagles will improve with each game. We'll just have to wait and see. I watched the game yesterday on tv, and didn't think we would win. We were sadly lacking in several areas, and the opposing quarterback was GOOD.

I would be very surprised if Northeastern doesn't wind up very high in A10 ratings as the season progresses. I think they are underrated. (And yes, we are overrated, at this point early in the season),

I think this difficult game will be a blessing in disguise for our Eagles. We can see our weakness's, hopefully work on them, and improve weekly. We KNOW unless we get substationally better we won't be playing in the post-season.

The best thing the Eagles young team showed me yesterday was they aren't quitters. You can't coach "heart"...

Just an old fart's opinion.

Best Wishes,
PX :)

Someone forgot to take his meds.

Yes you are quite correct UD did not have a game. Good job of reading the schedule.

The GSU - NU game was broadcast in our area. Most of us don't get to see GSU so since I am a voter on the AGS poll, which you seem to totally disrespect, I thought is was important for me to watch the game and skip the yard work yesterday.

Actually if you read the threads prior to this game most UD posts directed at GSU folks were not to take NU lightly as they play really well at home. Do you disagree with this assessment? Or do you think NU is on a par with Elon?
I guess by calling NU "patsies" you believe they are the equivalent of Elon or UT Chatanooga. If that is the case you have a lot of work to do before you face Furman at Paulson.

Yes we lost to these guys in '03'. You can't have an off day in the A-10 and we did. All the A-10 teams are tough and one can lose on Any Given Saturday.

You seem to have little or no repect for Patriot League teams. They have done better in the playoffs than GSU has in the last 2 years and have very competitive teams. Delaware can very well lose to a PL team this week. The team we face is picked to win their conference has an experienced QB and one game under their belt. Delaware is replacing most of their defense and their O-line. If we lose it will be to a top 20 ranked I-AA team. Something you guys only scheduled once this season.

U Del people we're calling NU a 5th or 6th place team, some even a 9th or 10th. I disagree, in fact, I think they will go farther than Deleware, UNH, and possibly W & M which is why I put Patsy in quotes.

It is YOU folks that are all high and mighty about the A-10 and look down on every other conference, which is why I think it will be funny when a team from outside the almighty A-10 beats you next week.

And yes, I do have a lack of respect for a poll that is decided by posters from a casual messageboard. Don't get me wrong, I love the messageboard, I just don't pay any attention to the poll.

Please... not all UD fans trashed GSU's performance... I was impressed with the execution of their running game and their ability to make the big play when needed. GSU could have easily lost that game... but they didn't and that's what makes for a championship caliber team. UD fans are no more unreasonable than GSU fans or any others. You successfully misunderstood everything I wrote.

I think you totally underestimate the commitment of certain individuals to this board. There are 4 posters who have websites devoted to their teams that offer excellent information to folks like myself. I can't estimate the time and energy these guys put into having a product that offers valuable insights to the rest of the I-AA community.

There are posters who are on the campuses of these schools who have inside information that is offered and you will not see in the hometown papers.

I have learned much about I-AA football from this board and it has been due to the honest assessments of individual posters.

Yes there are homers who cannot be objective when something involves their own team but I find them in the minority on this board. For the most part I find here individuals who are candid about their own teams strengths and weaknesses. At times I would say they were overly critical. (this includes our GSU brethern and of course no one can criticize Delaware better than a Hen fan)

For the record I still think that NU is about 5th or 6th in the A-10. 5th or 6th in a conference that sent 4 to the playoffs is actually pretty good. There is very little drop off from the no. 1 team to 5th in the A-10 and the 5th or 6th place team can beat the no. 1 team on any given Saturday AND IT IS NOT AND UPSET in my view. The difference between UD being a 5th place team in '02 and a first place team in '03' was 17 points. Nova could make the same claim last year. So could Hofstra and Maine. NU may be the dark horse of the A-10 like UNH was last year. But anyone who follows the A-10 knew that UNH was no surprise. They lost to UD in '03' 22-21 when a field goal went wide at the end of the game and they have the most innovative coach in the A-10.

What is high and mighty about the A-10 is the quality of the competition from top to bottom. It has been said numerous times on this board that the best of the Big Sky and So Con could be successful in the A-10 and for one game any Patriot League team is EXTREMELY dangerous as they have excellent skill people . Chickenman goes everywhere to check this stuff out. But, Towson who has yet to win an A-10 game goes 3-0 out of conference including a pasting of Elon.

GSU saw what it is like to play every week in the A-10. Somtimes I think it hurts the conference as we beat each other up and might be too banged up when playoffs roll around. That and every week is a blood bath. But every Saturday the games are exciting and hypnotic and I wouldn't miss it for the world.

I can't remember where I had GSU before. I don't intend to drop them much if at all. they will definitely be above SIU who was overrated in 03 and 04.

Objections to the AGS poll would be more valid if there was some great poll judged by Deep Blue or something that would be informed, objective, etc.

The AGS poll, from everything I've seen (and I vote in it) is well-considered and relatively free of egregious bias. I don't think the same necessarily applies to other polls. It might even help that posters are not journalists or coaches.

Ultimately you would think a poll would be judged by it's foresight and responsiveness to what goes on during the season. The preseason AGS poll looks pretty good based on what's happened so far... equal or better than the ones some people would sooner pay attention to.

Nobody's poll means squat except the one that the playoff selection uses.

I think that I may have saw some guy on TV last year and he was saying that if you score as few as one more point more than whoever you play you are the winner, and he also said that if you only win one game a week eventually they give you rings.

GSU won and grew up alot doing it. They will be a very dangerous team by year's end. Foster and Austin are big trouble to defend. A lot of young people got their first collegiate starts and got a win today in a tough place over a team that defended their home field.

1-0 is 1-0.

I could care less if you guys, not y'all because I want all the A-10 fans to get this message, vote GSU 110th in the country as long as we win just one game a week.

Hey, you're welcome to your opinion, as I am to mine. As to moving down in the poll even after a loss, keep in mind this is just week 1 - this is the first time people actually get to see teams that they;ve only talked about before - it's perfectly reasonable that what you thought based on rumor and press clipings is viewed differently after actually seeing the team play. Preseason polls are only as good as the paper they're written on - it ain't the bible. Opinions can and will change after teams take the field.

You better learn how to do two things if you ever want to win easy over an A10 team

1 Pass
2 Defense (exp pass D)

Welcome to the A-10 GSU.....no Elon, WCU, or other SoCon patsy teams around!!!

Hey, this is not the smack board. Try facts. The A-10 is clearly the largest I-AA league for sure but as I've already shown according to the composite preseason rankings the Southland is better top to bottom. Try a little humility before you go smacking the best program I-AA has ever seen (they've lost more playoff games than JMU has played and they have the best winning pct. of anyone) and then do it on the smack board please.

Please ralph....you are telling me to calm down after all of the whooffing that GSU has done over the years??? If anybody deserves a slice of humility, its GSU.

And I stand by what I said....GSU would struggle in the A-10.....results speak for themselves.

Welcome to the A-10 GSU.........don't make us send UNH down again!!!
Now this is funny.....An A10 team gets a win over Georgia Southern and the whole damn conference pokes out their chest. :D But I guess you can't complain with what you have been delt when your own school couldn't get the job done. I don't think JMU fans have any room to talk smack about Ga. Southern when the Eagles own a 7-1 record over the Dukes.

And I stand by what I said....GSU would struggle in the A-10.....results speak for themselves.
You're right....results speak for themselves.

Delaware - Series tied at 2-2
Hofstra - GSU leads the series 1-0
James Madison - GSU leads the series 7-1
Maine - GSU leads the series 2-0
Massachusetts - Series tied at 1-1
New Hampshire - UNH leads the series 0-1
Northeastern - GSU leads the series 1-0
Villanova - GSU leads the series 1-0
William & Mary - W&M leads the series 0-1
*Connecticut - GSU leads the series 1-0

That comes to a 16-6 record against the A10. This includes a 7-3 record against the A10 in the Playoffs. You still want to stand by what you said?

And just for the record....I will not argue that the A10 is hands down better than the SoCon top to bottom. But I'll put the top three of the SoCon with the top three of the A10 any day of the week!

That's two close competetive games in one playoff year (UNH won 27-23). Additionally, JMU was pretty darned lucky in that Furman game. Furman snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by fumbling when they were at the 2 yard line about to ice the game. Even if they just kick a field goal at that point it's over. After watching the two play on TV if somebody'd asked me to pick the winner if the two were going to play again the next day I'd have picked Furman.

What happened in the playoffs last year certainly can't reasonably be taken as proof that teams like Furman and GSU couldn't compete for the A-10 title.

I'll try to bring a little reality to this discussion...

Any A10 fan who thinks GSU wouldn't be a serious contender for the A10 title if they played in our league is just whistling past the graveyard. Of course GSU wouldn't dominate (no one does in the A10) but they certainly would contend. As an earlier poster stated... the A10 is stronger top to bottom... but the top of the SoCon is right there with the best of the A10. I believe that as well. What makes playing within the A10 so tough is that in most years 10 of the 12 league members are 'good' enough to upset the 'best' of the conference in any game. All road games in the A10 are adventures... none are easy wins. I think that is a fact that many non A10 fans don't really understand. I do believe that the A10 has improved dramaticly over the last five years and their fans are riding high right now... but that doesn't mean that things will stay that way. Remember... it wasn't long ago that it was... "the A10 can't win in the playoffs" and GSU was 'dominating' both the SoCon and I-AA.

For the record Adrian Peterson graduated from Georgia Southern University in 2001, along with the other 12 seniors on the team that year.

I know some of you might have a problem with a man who has a speech impediment who only became the greatest back in the history of the division actually being a fine student (one of my softball teammates went to HS with him, said he was a model student) and graduating.

I would challenge ANY school's fans on this board to show me a class of athletes better than the 2001 GSU group. All they did was win 4 SoCons, 2 NC's, 1 nat. runner-up, and a semi final appearance. They set the division home winning streak record and EVERY ONE OF THEM GRADUATED. That is the epitome of a successful program, true student athletes who are winners on the field and in the classroom.
