View Full Version : Brandon Webb - should win the Cy Young again

I realize that Peavy will win it. But Webby is the better pitcher, and more deserving candidate. When the pressure is on Peavy, he chokes. He did it several weeks ago in San Diego, when he had a chance to bury the Dbacks. Instead, he gave up 7 runs in four innings.
He had another chance last night. Instead, 6 runs in 5 innings - not the performance of a worthy Cy Young winner.
Contrast that to Webb. He goes into Colorado on Friday, and shuts down the same Rockies lineup when the Dbacks needed the win. Webb - deserves to win Cy Young award, again!!

B. Webb 18-10, 3.01 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 194 SO, 72 BB, 4 CG, 3 SO
Peavy 19-6 2.54 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 240 SO, 68 BB, 0 CG, 0 SO
I love Brandon Webb as much as the next DBacks fan, but the numbers don't lie.
Victories - Peavy
Losses - Peavy
ERA - Peavy
WHIP -Peavy
SO -Peavy
BB - Peavy
CG - Webb
SO - Webb
Take away the 44+ scoreless inning streak, and Webb's season can't compare. And even with 4 complete games, Webb had fewer innings pitched.
But, you know what jon? I'll take scoreboard over the Cy Young any day....and if you asked Webb whether he'd rather have the award or be in the playoffs, he'd probably say the same thing. xthumbsupx xthumbsupx xthumbsupx xthumbsupx xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx

I wouldn't say Peavey choked.
Last night that clown in center field cost Peavey a couple runs, and in the D-Back game he was pitching on 3 days rest.
Nobody pitches well on 3-days rest unless your name is Bob Gibson.

Yes, but numbers don't always tell the full story. When Webb needed to step up, he did. When Peavy needed to sack up, he fell on his ass. Champions prosper under adversity/pressure. Peavy is not a champion.

Yeah, but we all know the people who vote in these things ONLY look at the numbers. xcoolx xcoolx xcoolx xcoolx
Interesting arcticle by Jayson Stark on espn.com today....he stated that only 10 times in MLB history has a pitcher won the "triple crown" of pitching Victories/ERA/SO's, and they're a perfect 10/10 in the Cy Young award. Peavy won the triple crown in the Nat'l League this year....he'll make it 11/11. Unfortunately....and despite his pressure situation collapses.
