JoshUCA posted this on their board...
THE INJURED: Conque got a scare over the weekend when running backs Brent Grimes and Leonard Ceasar were injured in an automobile accident while in their hometown of Baton Rouge. Conque said the injuries were not life-threatening (more of the bumps, scrapes and bruises variety) but their status for Saturday's game awaits further medical evaluation this week. "The main thing is they're OK," Conque said. "They did the right thing. The accident wasn't the result of anything they did wrong."

I don't know a whole lot about Central Arkansas except for the fact that they have been moving out of D-II hell the last few years and have been demanding some respect out of it! Personally I wouldn't mind playing them since the Razorbacks will probably be getting some game in the not too distant future!
Watch out though Bomar is a serious weapon. He chewed us up enough!

Whats your point? Any Bearkat fan will admit our defense needs improvement. It dosn't help that we played NDSU and OSU...2 teams that would probably beat McNeese as well. And with the D2 games...only allowed 23 points in 2 games.

Whitten even said during the teleconference this week that the Bearkat defense has come a long way from even last year...
Everyone has got to get healthy and be on the field as a unit -- which I don't think we've had all season between Micholajak, Richmond and wasn't even McCall hampered a bit?

Why are we starting game threads on a Wednesday?
There are stories leading up to the game all week. Game stories just don't arise on game day. This thread is not just about the game itself, it is about everything around the game...
Also, some of the easy to answer questions are always answered in the initial post when you have audio links, release links, etc.
I throw this up on KatFans.com too as folks can plan accordingly and all the in-depth discussion about the game takes place in the thread.
This week it's even more critical to make sure that folks know we got the 'Pink Out' so the UCA folks can make sure to wear UCA pink this weekend! xnodx

SHSU Injury Update from the Item...
Injury updates — The Bearkats will be without wide receiver Darnell Jones (shoulder) and backup safety Jeff Sparks (ankle sprain) on Saturday. The good news, SHSU welcomes back starting safety Byran Richmond, who set out the Oklahoma State game to rest a separated shoulder. Richmond is second on the team in tackles (34), tied for first in tackles for a loss (four) and first in forced fumbles.

Article from UCASports.com...
CONWAY — On Saturday, when the University of Central Arkansas Bears travel to Huntsville, Texas to do battle with No. 19 Sam Houston State, it will be Pink Out day at Bowers Stadium.
Given that the Southland Conference's two most prolific offenses will take the field, it may also turn into Shootout day.
The Bears (1-3), led by junior quarterback Nathan Brown, are second in the SLC in total offense at 429.2 yards per game. The Bearkats (2-2), led by junior quarterback Rhett Bomar, lead the league at 435.2 yards per contest.

Kats back in similar situation
Once again, SHSU opens SLC action after playing Big 12 opponent
By Cody Stark
Assistant Sports Editor
Last season about this time, the Bearkats were coming off a 56-3 loss to the University of Texas in the final tuneup before Southland Conference play began.
Then the scoreboard might have been lopsided in favor of the defending Division I-A national champs, but Sam Houston State had several good things come out of the loss. The Kats fought hard until the end, running back D.D. Terry rushed for more yards against the Longhorns than any other ballcarrier last season, and most importantly, everybody made it back to Huntsville healthy.
SHSU (2-2) is in the same boat again this year, coming off a loss against one of the better teams in the Big 12. And as was the case in Austin, the Kats didn’t have any reason to be down following a 39-3 loss to Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla., last weekend.
It was a loss, but Sam Houston moved the ball well only to come up short in Cowboys’ territory several times, and again, the team is almost completely healthy heading into Saturday’s conference opener against Central Arkansas (1-3 overall, 0-1 in SLC) at Bowers Stadium.
“I think playing Oklahoma State really helps seasoning you with a tough conference schedule coming up,” SHSU head coach Todd Whitten said. “We have had two really good days of practice so I feel good about where our football team is at. We have to finish it up well (today)."

UCA’s Paul takes ordinary approach to kicking duties
BY NICK WALKER
CONWAY — Kickers are weird.
As a general rule, they tend to be the oddballs of the football team.
There are countless stories of kickers going through intricate routines before kicks or changing shoes every time something goes wrong, but not Central Arkansas ’ James Paul.
“I just don’t get into all that,” Paul said.

Whitten on pre-game show...
(On Secondary Injuries) Talking about how several guys are stepping up in the defensive backfield (Onwachi, Stewart) for all the injuries that have occurred...Sparks is out for six weeks (I think he said)...
(On WR situation) Trey Payne and Chris Lucas will rotate in at WR due to Darnell Jones injury...
(On Bomar booing/cheering) Said he had headsets on. Said there was some focus on Bomar, but most of focus on football game...
(On running game) TW evaluates opponent and said running would be difficult at NDSU, OSU. Said chose to throw it a bit more and said it hurt Kats in red zone. TW says look for a balanced attack against UCA.

October 6th, 2007, 06:42 PM
Pre-game continued...
(On first SLC game) Lost some games at home in SLC last year and the goal is to be 100% at home in conference. UCA has a good football team, throws it around a bit with good QB. Pressure important on QB. Need balanced attack, more explosive on offense.
(On being ready for UCA) Best practice this year. Doing best to not allow UCA to win at Bowers again
(More on UCA) Young, but talented. Nice to play another FCS opponent. Anxious to start SLC play
(Nathan Brown) Similar to NDSU QB. Experience. Hard to sack. Explosive. Proven winner. Efficient in what he doe.
(Brown's weapons) RB returning are good as are wideouts. Very athletic squad. Young at spots, but QB is excellent and there'll be times he hurts Sam, just got to limit it.
(Keys for winning) Defensive -- pass rush, limit Brown, do not let Brown win by himself. Offensive -- better red zone play and more explosive.
(On McNeese) Not enough good wins to look forward to anything. One game at a time -- that's what Kats are going to do.

NWST had three QBs get hurt. The third string QB finished the game out with a bum knee. Four TDs coming from INTs...things just snowballed quickly...
Not sure it's a good measure of how good Nicholls is or how "bad" NWST is. We'll learn more in the weeks ahead...SLC football, gotta love it!
