Very exciting game today! Both teams have strong offenses and will be forces through the remainder of the season. Good Luck to UNH the rest of the way. The crossing patterns gave us a fit today, Santos is a stud we hit him oover and over but he stayed on his feet only to find and hit the open man. (As for the comments about the refs, they were typical bad, but I felt they were bad both ways. UR had to fight the constant holds to get at Santos, seldom called. )

The UNH defense needs a change in philosophy. They allow the offenses to dictate to them. They ned to get more aggressive in their play calling to put their players in position to make plays. Right now they are only in position to make tackles

They can start by putting a body on the man with the ball. No offense to Hightower, being a big strong running back, but man you can't arm tackle people. Many plays that were broken for big gains could have been held for 2-3 yards if the tackled with the shoulder pads and wrapped up. xnonono2x

I agree with you in regard to the shoddy tackling.Defensive players shouldn't have to be taught a fundamental thing like proper tackling techniques at this level.

...hey UNH fans, I don’t like to be critical of my team & certainly no expert, but am I the only one that thinks UNH play calling & personnel decisions are poor?

Why is Chris Ward the starting RB & not Robert Simpson? It seems like every game they waste about 5 plays allowing him to run (too high) & gain about 2 yards per carry. Then they bring Simpson in & he’s electric & punishing. The reason they lost to UMASS last year is because they didn’t have a guy like Simpson that they could use to get the 3 critical yards. PLAY HIM MORE. What more do you need to see? It seemed that Ward got a 2nd life when he had that great drive against Marshall where he looked like clock-killin Corey Dillon….he was commended & rightfully so. So use him in the 4th qtr when he’s fresh & you need someone to bang inside. You think Simpson wouldn’t have penetrated that Marshall defense on the last drive while they were exhausted?

Why is Keith Levan returning kicks? Isn’t that Mike Boyle’s specialty? All due respect to Levan because he’s had a couple long ones but isn’t Mike Boyle the weapon? His first return this year, he had to run in front of Levan to get the ball & then took it to the house. One week later, what did Richmond do with both guys back there? Yep – kicked it to Levan every time. Conversely, Richmond has their own “weapon”..& they had no problem making him the single return man…result? 222 yards on 5 returns & nearly 2 TD..probably the biggest difference in the game

Someone made a great point on AGS about being more aggressive on defense. UNH lets opposing teams dictate their strategy & never throws them off. They wait until a weakness is exposed & they play on their heels. I think they could learn something from UMASS

Throw more downfield! Yeah, yeah…I know, Santos had no time to throw against Richmond..blah blah blah. But did anyone notice when they did air it out? I remember 3 times….one was 30 yards to Sicko who will catch it over most anyone who covers him. The other was 35 to Boyle who almost broke it for a touch…the third was incomplete but Boyle was wide open on a fly. So it was working. Why not strike deep more?

Sicko over the middle. If it aint broke don’t fix it. Why did they wait until the 2nd half against Richmond to work Sicko underneath? After all, the kid is, well, sicko

Where are the trick plays? OK we know Chip Kelly is gone…but with the hurry up, no huddle, spread offense….gimmick plays work. The last time I checked, Kelly’s style is working pretty well for the #14 Oregon Ducks. They used to let Santos be a lot more creative & magical. Which he did amazingly well. I haven’t seen him do the play action where he drops back & hides the ball for a second behind his back, giving his WR time to get open & fooling every team that saw it. I haven’t seen the flee-flicker that would lead to 70 yard TD passes…I haven’t seen direct snaps to the RB…no statue of liberty…nothing. I’m not saying do it every series but keep the defense honest…after all, UNH strength is speed & offensive explosiveness. It seems that the end to end sweep option play they run is lame. so unless it's going for good yardage... I’d rather see something either more exotic or more basic; like going off tackle to set up the play action. But the side to side stuff doesn’t work & does nothing to contribute to creating a pocket & letting Santos hit his targets on subsequent plays….it just seems to continue to run him & the entire offense east & west

Sean Jellison. #24. I saw him on the field so it looked like he was healthy enough to play special teams but not be used in the offense at all? Well if anyone saw the Spring game…he was the most exciting & fastest player on the field breaking a couple of very long plays. I’d like to see him worked in

Running back out of the backfield? Screens that work. So Richmond is blitzing…they finally adjust & dumped a couple screens off to Boyle & Simpson ….but they were caught from behind. It seems to me they need to stretch it…ala Ladanian Tomlinson….send the tailback out to the flats or release from blocker…but don’t dink it into linebacker land.

so I just get the feeling that they aren't really clicking despite putting up points...I think they can be better than they are on offense. The play calling is weird & 3rd down conversions becoming painful to watch (3 for 16! against Richmond). This week will tell a lot & I can't wait...I hope they don't figure it out too late

...hey UNH fans, I don’t like to be critical of my team & certainly no expert, but am I the only one that thinks UNH play calling & personnel decisions are poor?...

Holy Smokes, relax! Last year's nationally acclaimed coaching staff didn't suddenly get dumb. It is a long season and UNH will be there. Coach Mac and his staff will get their share of wins. They've endured some extraordinarily difficult circumstances to start the season:

--Toughest schedule to start the season of any FCS team. (Look who Delaware has played,... look at UMASS prior to BC game, .....)

--gamebreaking Kackert on the shelf, Jellison on the shelf

--Couple of breakdowns that turned around the JMU game when the Dukes were vulnerable

--Couple of drops late in the game vs Richmond. Some poor tackling, ....

Let's see what happens this weekend. UNH is at home, will have good crowd and good weather on a very fast track. A victory over Delaware puts them on track for very possibly 9-2 (run the table) or still playoff bound @ 8-3.

Think back over the last 4 years, enjoy the hordes of great moments and memories, and don't go south on this team just yet. xnonox

The Legend of Santos will continue to work magic xbowx , the defense will show some pride, the offense will figure out its playmakers, and the coaches will continue to do the great job they've done for quite a while now... xthumbsupx

UNH 56, Delaware 36 and then we are off to the races!

WSBE

thanks VT Wildcat. Good stuff.

yeah I am a little frustrated but you are absolutely right about the circumstances.

The schedule is brutal & I wish it was the other way around

They were rolling until the uncharacteristic int against JMU.....& the drops were tough in the 4th qtr at Richmond. Not to mention the blatant pass interference that wasn't called. Both circumstances change everything & they're still not playing their best ball

I was just saying to someone last weekend that UMASS doesn't play JMU, Richmond or Delaware this year! I'm not knocking UMASS but if you thought their 4 games before BC were easy...check out the next 4 (after a bye of course): Villanova, Northeastern, William & Mary, & Rhode Island!!

Even thought the refs missed stuff both ways nothing will make up for a non-call on an obvious pass interference on the UNH receiver on the final Wildcat possession. That was absolutely horrible!! It is impossible to see how that was missed when everyone there knew we were going to throw. I'm sure Coach Mac went ballistic!

That said, it was a great effort and win by a very talented Richmond team.

Yes, despite the terrible camera that entire game, I was mystified at that non-call. With that said, Levan has got to catch that ball with about 5 minutes to go where he was wide open. Hightower is an absolute beast, though. We kept him in "check" I suppose, and he still dominated.

UNH fans have to remember that all is not lost. If we beat Delaware this weekend we are in ok shape. I think the key to the rest of the season will be determining how we grow defensively because we are very young at some key positions (db's!). Also I believe the health of Chad Kackert is a key to where we go from here.

I wanted to talk a bit about my impressions of the defense, and the coaching, which I've been critical of in the past. Let's start with the coaching, as that probably reflects down into the players.

The first thing I noticed about Richmond is that they were literally pounding the ball down our throat toward the end of the game, and yet we insisted on playing Maurice Duper (he played well, but he's not a LB) over Devon Jackson, who I had seen in the game a few times. Jackson has at least 30-35 pounds on Duper, and would have been a big help in trying to bring down the RB. The glorified nickel does not make much sense in any circumstance, but PARTICULARLY when it's a clear running circumstance, as it was toward the end of the game.

Secondly, why are our corners continually giving tons of yards of cushion to the opposing WR's? John Clements and Dino Vasso, both talented cover corners, are stuck having to play 10 yards off their receivers and then, since they're quite small, they're having a hard time tackling those players. If we're going to have the extra defensive back on the field, why not try and press-cover a bit and use the extra DB's over the top. In most cases, QB's are checking down, anyway.

The defense certainly needs to learn how to tackle, but I'd just argue that they're not big enough to make a difference anyway. Karim and Parent have been continually forced to fall back into coverage, rendering us incapable of stopping anything. It's quite frustrating. It's not like our DL is big enough to justify going smaller.

I agree with Chris Ward...with the exception of the Marshall game, he really doesn't deserve to see the field. I noted only one series when Sean Jellison was even on the field. I'd like to see more of him and Simpson, and less of Ward. Agreed, also, with the person mentioning the dearth of trick plays...did they all go to Oregon?!

thanks VT Wildcat. Good stuff.

yeah I am a little frustrated but you are absolutely right about the circumstances.

Wow, I didn't realize UMASS's schedule after the bye week was SOOO unintimidating! If UNH can get by Delaware, & beat Hofstra, they "could" be something like 7-2 (I think) going into UMASS vs a Minuteman team that likely will not have been challenged to play a complete game before or after the BC/Villanova contests. Ripe for an upset, I would think.

It's easy to get frustrated w/ UNH after all the expectations they've built up for their fans since Santos took over. However, let's give them the benefit of the doubt. I think you'll be impressed this weekend!
