Mariano Rivera blew a 3 run 9th inning lead and Baltimore won it in the 10th.

Boston lowered their magic number for the leagues best record to 2 pending the Cleveland game.

This is Boston's first division championship since 1995 and ends New York's long streak of division titles.

Official logo coming soon :p

And Joe, I assume your avatar will arrive tomorrow xcoolx

Wow, only fitting that the Yanks concede the division with yet another loss to the Orioles. Yanks must be happy that Baltimore is far removed from the playoffs as the O's have just tortured the Yanks this year.

And Mariano going in to get some work just blows up in the 9th. You obviously still feel pretty comfortable with him in the playoffs, and even now he's probably still the best closer in the majors going into the playoffs, but he's certainly far from the form that he had in the late 90's when he was the best of all time. Makes you wonder where they go next year - do they scrap the idea of keeping Chamberlain a starter and begin to think that he may be their next closer? Playoffs come first, obviously, but interesting though.

Congratulations to the Red Sox and their fans. A Division title is always a great accomplishment (except in the NL Central :p), and Boston should be proud of their season to date.

We'll see you in October ;)

Back in May, when it looked like the Red Sox would run away with the American League East...one Yankees fan had the faith in his team to take to their defense and issue a challenge...

We need to make a friendly wager. If the Sox win the AL East, I'll agree to sport a Red Sox avatar for as long as they stay in the playoffs.

If the Yanks win the AL East, you have to do the same.

Up for it? Come on. You got a 10 game lead. Put your October money where your May mouth is!

I accepted this challenge...and waited...and the Yankees got HOT, HOT, HOT!!!

But the Red Sox were able to stem the tide...they survived...and with a little help from Travis, I am happy we can now provide joltinjoe with his new avatar...

joe...they made it interesting...and I'm getting my October mouth ready...

Hey, just saw the actual highlights - not to excuse Rivera from blowing the game, but how about Abreu's butchering of that triple in the 9th that brought in all 3 runs? Man, he couldn't have played that ball any worse. A normal RF gets to the ball and maybe 2 runs come in - instead, Bobby "proof that the Gold Glove is a joke" Abreu plays it as only he can and it becomes an easy triple. Priceless.

Agreed. A decent outfielder keeps that ball in front of him. The other night, rookie Bronson Sardinha was playing RF and caught a ball over his shoulder as he ran into the wall. You never see a RFer in pinstripes do such a thing.

I like Abreau's plate patience and he's got a great arm. But I'm convinced ge gifts away more runs with his defense than he gets back with his bat. His future in NY should be as a DH. Oh wait, we already have a guy like that under contract for next year -- Jason Giambi.

I never liked the Giambi deal. That was done years ago to lure YES investors. The Yankees were a far better team when they had a team of good but not great offensive players who played top defense at their position.

Ok, a deal's a deal but an avatar with a World Series inscription? Don't you think that's a bit premature? Even Travis, the king of over-the-top celebration, merely has an AL East Division championship avatar.

But what the heck? To the victor, the spoils. Congratulations on a great season to you and the other Sox fans here.

Dave has asked me to change to an AL East champions avatar and take down the premature World Series avatar. He apparently believes that the baseball gods who previously inflicted 86 years of famine and pestilence on the Red Sox nation will be pacified by the more humble avatar.

What are the Vegas odds of a Sox/Cubs series?

If not for a Grady Little meltdown and a Steve Bartman episode followed by the worst display of defense in 2003 we would have had that matchup.

If you want to do it at the House That Ruth Built, we only have one more season.

After that, we'll have to do it at the House That YES Built.

Congrats to the Sox! Able to hang on despite a myriad of injuries and ineffectiveness of some off-season acquisitions. They showed some stones! xthumbsupx xbowx

This is Boston's first division championship since 1995 and ends New York's long streak of division titles.

Congrats on the Division title xsmileyclapx and thanks for breaking the Yankees string xhurrayx (it was getting too close to my Braves string of 14).

It'll be interesting to see what happens if there's another Boston/New York ALCS.
