We all have heard that the Phillies have a tough schedule coming in, but the schedule is silly in that they only play six different teams in the month of September.

That's pretty much like a lot of others due to the 'unbalanced' schedule the league has adopted. Certainly makes for an interesting month when most of the competition will be within the division.

That is quite a remaining schedule - all playoff contenders with the exception of Cincy. Makes it interesting when all the playoff hopefuls have to square off against each other.

Haven't the Reds owned the Phillies this year?

Nope, Hen. They two teams split a 4-game set at the Cit in May. Over the long term, the Reds have always played the Phils tough.

No ***** Sherlock. ;)
Are you a Braves fan though? And if you are, were you a Braves fan in the 80's, or are you one of their numerous "glory riders?"

I have been a Braves fan since the mid 60's, when the Braves moved to Atlanta and I was 6-7 years old. My first sports autographs came at a Rich's store in downtown Atlanta when Hank Aaron and Joe Torre signed a cap for me-which I still have almost 40 years later. Having the Braves for spring training about 25 miles from my house every spring is nirvana.
Now for a dose of reality. With 24 games left and the Braves with a 6 game lead on the closest competitor, if they play .573 ball, which they have done all year, they will finish with 93 wins; which means the Phils and Fish would have to 20-4 to TIE. Ain't gonna happen, the Braves have Smoltz, Hudson, the Jones', Giles, Furcal and most of all Bobby Cox who won't allow a protracted slump to occur. If the Braves merely split series from here on out they win.

Nice! I forgot about Claudell Washington. They had some good teams in the early 80's, but most of the squads those guys played for are pretty forgetable. I suspect that's why Murphy is not in the HOF yet.

Are the Phillies ever gonna beat the 'Stros? That's ten straight wins against the Phillies for the 'Stros...
Oh, Astros are the only team in the Wild Card race not in the East, so they got the Wild Card fate in their hands. Everyone in the east will beat the crap out of each other. 'Stros only got two more games left against Cards. After Phillies, the 'Stros can cakewalk if they get some runs. With Ben Sheets, the Astros killer out, we're good against the Brew Crew...

Seems to me that the Phils always have a team they can't buy a win off of. Before the Astros began this streak, the Phils couldn't beat the Marlins to save their lives.

Everybody at work keeps asking me what's up with the Phils. I remind them what I told them last week:
"They'll enter Sept. in first place for the Wild Card. Then they'll fade like a pair of cheap blue-jeans. It's what they do best as long as Ed Wade is GM."

And now the WIP talk radio guys are saying that both Urbina and Wagner will leave. John Marzano, the local TV analyst, says and I quote: "The Phillies just can't hit good major league pitching." If we have to use the likes of Martinez and Tomas Perez to pinch hit, well...
Marcus Garvey
September 7th, 2005, 04:15 PM
If they want to be able to sign top free-agent pitchers, they also need to blast out the first 10 rows in left field at the Cit. Otherwise, they'll be the Rockies of the NL East.
Also, why in the hell did they ever trade Rickey Ledee? He was their best pinch-hitter since Greg Gross!

You guys are just giving up on the like that (snap)? There are still 23 games left for them to make up a 1.5 game difference with the Astros. Now, I'm not saying they're going to do it, but still, I wouldn't write them off. I'm just hoping they, the Marlins, or even the stupid Gnats win the wild card so my Braves don't have to face the Astros, and instead can face the hovering-at-.500 Padres.

Cleary, you are not a Phillies fan. Only a lifelong Phillies fan would understand why we're giving up. Hell, I gave up in May and for the first time since I've lived in AZ, I didn't see them play the D-Backs in Phoenix.

After last night's performance I was very disheartened. Tonight's game is crucial. A loss tonight, and I think the fork will stuck. Their 'veterans' are choking down the stretch. Burrell and Abreau have been virtually awol the past four games. Ironically they've gotten some very good starting pitching. Lieber has been tremendous the last few weeks, but gets not run support. Tons of runners left on base, Rollins misses first base last night...Not the type of play that makes champions. If they win tonight, they're 1/2 back and then must take their play up a notch. If they don't, they're toast.

Marcus, as one who bears the scars of '64, I grab for whatever hope I can get. My head says the Marlins (as I've posted before), but my oft-broken heart will always be with the Phils.

I watched that Biggio bomb on TV and heard Harry's call live. The numbness I felt was comparable to the '77 Dodger playoff game with Manny Mota's "heroics" and Greg Luzinski's dropped fly ball (Jerry Martin? where the hell was Martin? Garber, you suck! Ozark, call your shrink!).

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you compare Manuel to Ozark? Keep in mind, this is the "Ozark" scale, so Danny's a 10. I think all managers have games where they score a 9 or better on the Ozark Scale. Jim Fregosi's handling of the Phils' bullpen in Game 6 of the '93 World Series jumps to mind!

Hard to say, Marcus. After all, Ozark did win 3 division titles with the Phils in the pre-wild card days, while Manuel has won bupkis. Manuel does have Ozark-like tendencies to have massive strategic brain cramps. Charlie sticks to bad habits, like (a) using Tomas Perez as a pinch hitter, (b) sticking to his current "7-8-9" bullpen strategy game after game, even when Madson and Urbina are stinking up the joint, and (c) ever bringing Rheal Cormier into a game. (Dancy is a travesty in the third base coaching box, but don't get me started on that!) Anyhow, given their press conference performances, I will say that the two are equally inarticulate!! Give Charlie an 8+ on the Ozark scale, with time to catch up.

:) Ozark's teams also had 101 wins in '76 and '77. So when you think about it, Ozark was one of the most successful managers in the dismal history of Phillies baseball. One of the most heralded managers, the late Gene Mauch, probably made the worst decisions ever when he overused pitchers Bunning and Short in the great pennant fiasco of 1964! :(

That's right, foghorn. In '64, Dennis Bennett got hurt and Art Mahaffey (loser of the infamous 1-0 Chico Ruiz game) had a sore arm, but Mauch could have used Ray Culp or a very young Rick Wise to get over the hump. Ozark did well in the regular seaon but always got waxed in the playoffs, and the Phillie faithful never forgave him for that.

The Marlins totally self-destructed in the top half of the ninth. Errors, pop flares falling in between players - it looked a lot like Phillies / Marlins games down the stretch last year, but the roles were reversed.

It was unbellievable. Phils sent 14 batters to the plate in the 9th. Florida just self destructed in the field--looked like a junior high game.
Regarding the Manuel discussion. Gotta admit the pinch hit for Lieber the other night was huge. Tucker came through and they blew the game open. There are some magical things occuring right now....but I've been around this team (consciously) for 47 years--so I'm trying not to get too excited, but they are fun to watch right now...

Astros are going to be tough to pass, but it's doable. Plotting ahead the rotation, seems the big three (Rocket, Roy O and Pettite) will be starters for the last series of the season against the Cubs. Astros have gotten solid starts from everyone and this weekend, Everett and Ensberg were out. As was Taveras and then Burke got hurt. Bruntlett, Vizcaino stepped it up...
