View Full Version : Cap'n Cat's Week Five "Count On 'Em" Gateway Purrrrdiction Post!!!

Hey, kids! Meows and Purrs and tummy rubs to all my FCS friends and foes! The Cap'n is back and He is, again, passing on to you, lucky reader, His vast knowledge of all that is Gateway Conference football!

Some notes: No Gateway Pillowfight games this week! Youngstown is actually playing a good team! Imagine that!?!?!?!!! xlolx xlolx xlolx

To the games:

North Dakota State @ The LeatherNation:

NDSU, everyone's sentimental pick for #1 in the division, not eligible for playoff contention yet, motors down to Macomb hoping to put a lickin' on the LeatherHeads. NDSU arrives fresh off an old school azz-whoopin' of virtually perennial FBS basement dweller, Central Michigan, and they'll be hoping to resurrect the magic here. Western Illinois is a team without identity - are they good, do they suck, again? Who knows?

Western Illinois, long FCS' "JUCO U", will have to get all of those guys out of jail on a weekend pass to even have a chance in this one. They need to get out for a while, anyway, to sign papers on all the paternity suits they are facing, so might as well let them play football for a coupla hours.

Cap'n Cat is wishin' he could call a LeatherHead victory, but NDSU is too big, too fast, too good and too much right now for Western. They legitimize their Top Five ranking and dispatch LeatherNation convincingly:

State: 40
Leather 'n' Lace 7

**************

Southern Illinois @ Indiana State:

The Leafed Ones host powerhouse Southern Illinois at a time of much confusion in Terre Haute, the only city on the country, BTW, that is one step up on the food chain from Youngstown, OH.........

Out with the new and in with the old is the rally cry there as "new" coach, Lou West, is reassigned to the equipment office and "new" old Coach Dennis Raetz alights on the sidelines to babysit until the offseason during which Indiana State will lustily pursue a Northern Iowa asssitant like a Youngstown State coed salivates for man meat at a rap concert. Hell, virtually every conference sister school has tapped the UNI staff over the years.
But, about the game, one could hope that the change might spark some renewed bravado among the Syc team, staff and faithful. But, it won't. There is so much disarray there that they've invited the Iraq Study Commission in to try to sort it out. The season, regrettably, is already lost to the Trees. Chance of an upset here is virtually nil. Break out the crying towels, again, Leafed Ones (if they've ever dried from the last two years):

Cap'n Cat's Gateway Upset Special Of The Week

Missouri State @ Youngstown State:

The Bears of SWMO are quietly and methodically making waves, well, maybe ripples, as they plod, one step at a time, through their 2007 skeddy. They've had unexpected success along the way, too. No one picked them to beat UT-Martin. No one picked them to beat UCA, the latter of which The Cap'n thought was a fine team, having seen them last year at the Beef Bowl in Brookings, SD. Yeah, they've been close, maybe lucky, wins, but who wouldn't like to have Mama Luck ridin' naked on her horse in their locker room?
Terry Allen, winningest coach in Gateway history has them believing and has them running a high performing, scoreboard-sizzling offense. Defense needs some TLC, but this Cat knows that will come.

Then, there's Youngstown.

Three-and 1. They get props for lining up against big, bad Ohio State, but the rest of their schedule, ex South Dakota State, reads like an NAIA chorus line, with "wins" over Vermont School Of Mines and East Central Kentucky School Of Culinary Arts. And we give Montana shat for their schedule!

The South Dakota State game was a bit closer than the Waddling Ones would like. UNI beat SDSU, a solid team still finding its FCS legs, at their place by a similar score, something the Pens would positively NOT be able to do. Pen fans are biting their nails this weekend (could be this game or it could be them looking ahead with dread to a date with UNI in the Dome, 10/27) and are right for doing so. The mere fact that there is an ex-Panther on the sidelines for this game, gives the Pens the the chilly-willies, they lose focus and lose this high-scoring game, in a mildly shocking way -

Cap'n Cat's Gateway Game Of The Week!!!!

Northern Iowa @ Illinois State:

Always a fun game, except for the loser. Lots of acrimony has built up over the last ten years in this series - one team knocks the other out of a lofty ranking, the other one returns the favor later. One admin bans The Cap'n from their website.....

Admittedly, the Crimson Crows have been a burr in Panther fur in the last five years. Though they haven't had particualrly good teams at each meeting, they've managed to get fired up for this one every season.

The fans don't get along much, either. Whereas UNI fans are respectful and reserved, the State stands are filled with loudmouth, beer-muscled, skinhead frat fux from long-past-their-prime west suburbs of Chicago like Downers Grove, Villa Park, Lombard, Warrenville and east Aurora. Goth chicks with purple hair and nipple clamps and genital jewelry, etc.........

Cap'n Cat longs for the days when the Crows would lie prostrate on the field and take their beating from the Corn State Cats. Shoot, I remember The Purple Cats opening the season with the RedWings one year in the Dome and putting 50-0 shellacking on them. Those days are gone, unfortunately, until State slips into another couple decades of mediocrity here in a couple years after Laramie Johnson, their HC, takes a, ahem, "promotion", to a MAC school.

UNI comes in with a monster offense and getting-better-everyday defense and will do away with the Crows in slow, torturous fashion. Ordinarily, The Cap'n would not be so cavalier about a dangerous game such as this, but, you know what? It's Illinois State and they can piss off!

I got nuthin' but love for the Cap'n but he's a bit delusional about his prediction. Aside from playing in the big pup tent UNI calls a dome, The Black Cats haven't enjoyed the success they once checked as a gimme on the schedule in Normal.

Purple Nation shows up in their Winnebagos spilling Ethanol all over the parking lot and drinking grain alcohol made from the finest Iowa Corn and Wheat. Then the liquored up Nation of Purple comes into Hancock expecting us to fall all over their D-II conference titles back when the football team wore leather helmets and such! NOT!

Gettin' banned from RBF.com is a lot harder than you can imagine, so that notion of UNI fans (Cap'n being the model citizen that he is - NOT) being next on list of Sainthood ain't entirely true! Something about being ranked #1 and taking a 38-3 @$$ whoopin' back to the Field of Dreams don't sit too well with the good folks of CedarLoo and WaterFalls!

We won't talk about the cheerleaders and pom squads who aside for their Scandanavian blonde hair and blue eyes, they also double as the stand in for the Michelin Man during his commercials. Iowa Livestock at it's finest! While Illinois State's Dance team and cheerleaders have been known to make a jaw or two drop at the MVC BB tournament with their stunning good looks and sexy attire.

ISU lost in Iowa last year and we just tipped our hats to the better team. UNI lost in Normal two years ago, and Panther Nation was B#$$%% and Moaning about how rude they were treated.

Oh, I'm sorry...(in my finest British Accent) Would Cap'n Cat care to take pleasure in our beautiful wenches? Drink our wonderful and abundant ale and then treat us like a cheap harlot? Sorry Cap'n. New Day and new fans in Normal!

But to show you I'm a nice guy. I'll be tailgating this weekend at the game. Stop by and we can exchange pleasantries, beer, and some good food before the "Crimson Crows" as you call us remove that #1 from next to your name again.

Hey Cap'n, thanks for putting together a Gateway prediction thread...VERY COOL!!

Usually I seem to line up pretty well with your predictions, but this week I'm going to take some chances and go 3 out of 4 different.

The one game that I will agree on is:

SIU over IN St. 42-3
New coach...same result for the Sycamores...this could get MUCH more ugly.

Now for the others...hmmmm...

YSU over MSU 28-10
The Ice Palace will be rockin' for the first Gateway game. MSU's program is definitely on the upswing, so this matchup should be closer than in past seasons, but I still see the Penguins getting the win.

WIU over NDSU 30-28

Huge upset here. Think the Necks are going to show the Bison a little WIU hospitality...weird things happen in Macomb. I don't think many fans are giving the Necks enough credit for going into Illini land and playing that game fairly close...I know many say that was close in score only. Also I'm not giving NDSU BIG kudos for knocking off a so-so to just plain bad Central Michigan team.

IL St. over UNI 34-31

A wild shoot-out with a Redbird victory because it'll be a standing room only OVERFLOW rowdy crowd in Normal and the Birds are in must-win mode for the rest of the season....now that they already have 2 losses.
Folks you can throw the Drake comparison game right out the window...that is HISTORY. UNI's win over Iowa St was a good one, but I'll be interested to see how the Cyclowns season goes from here. Think Panther fans predicting a 3 TD win are being unrealistic.

Take it for what it's worth, but if the Redbirds want to have a shot at the playoffs, then they NEED to win this game to avoid going 2-3 to start. UNI can afford 1 to 2 GFC losses and will still be sitting pretty for a fantastic playoff seed. The Birds have EVERTHING to gain with a win over the Panthers. That reasoning is take it to the bank.

The Gateway games this season are going to be FEROCIOUS...no doubt about that! Here's to some excellent and injury-free games on Saturday...YES! Thanks again Cap'n for the thread and always like your capsules. The GFC battles are on and it's going to be one WILD ride this season. xnodx

First of all, welcome to the board....I don't see a lot of IlSt posters, so it's nice to have as much Gateway representation as possible. Now on to business....

Not sure we were the better team in 2005 without our starting QB. The write-up the following week says it all:

Normal, IL - A wounded UNI football team went up against a hot and confident Illinois State squad this afternoon, falling to the Redbirds 38-3 in Normal, IL. It was the worst regular season loss to a non-1-A team since losing 52-9 at home to Southern Illinois in the 1983 season.

I doubt many FCS teams could have won in Normal that day...you guys were on fire.

And lighten up? It was a simple question.....I feel our squad is better than they we were last year. What do you think about your team?

Prediction: UNI 34, ISU 24

Redbirds 28
Black Cats 24

Grizz Fans....get ready to assume that #1 spot.

Not bad, REAL! Gotta make the digs a little more subtle; that's what makes them more humorous.

I can call one:

NDSU BISON over the WIU Leathernecks.

A powerful running attack will be muted by a strong BISON defense. In time it will be overwhelmed by a balanced BISON attack.

You have to stop both the run and the pass if you want to have a chance against NDSU. Then you have to win the special teams battle and play a game with few or no mistakes.

From what we have seen so far this year the Leathernecks dont have it.

I have the BISON by 14.

Cap'n Cat longs for the days when the Crows would lie prostrate on the field and take their beating from the Corn State Cats. Shoot, I remember The Purple Cats opening the season with the RedWings one year in the Dome and putting 50-0 shellacking on them.

should be a great game, and it won't be a blowout but UNI should tear up ISU on the ground. ISU is givng up over 200 yards per game on the ground and UNI has a phenomenal rushing attack with 3 great runners in Lewis, Willams and Sanders.

And I'll be there, and Lord knows we've only lost 4 games in 4 years when i've been in attendance as an undergrad!

Hope to meet some fine Illinois State people...

SOME, not all, UNI fans are pretty full of themselves, if they cannot take a little good-natured trash talking from an opposing teams fans.

Congrats to the Panthers on a tough, hard-fought victory! I think this game was definitely winnable for the Birds as a 13-13 deadlock with 5 minutes left would indicate.

ISU's QB Luke Drone got a little pick happy and UNI made it count in the final minutes of the game. I see these two teams as being darn close to being even. I read on UNI's fan board where NOW their team will be taking on the "real" Gateway contenders. Folks don't kid yourself about the Birds. The Panthers may have escaped Normal with a victory, but they had to fight all the way against a quality opponent.

I'm NOT dropping the Birds out of my top 25 for losing a razor-close game to UNI. IMHO a couple of the other "real" GFC contenders MAY (not sure by any means) have been masquerading so far racking up wins against less than stellar schedules.
Plenty of season left, and the Gateway will be a shoot-out every Saturday.

Congrats again UNI fans on a well-deserved (and VERY important) road win in Normal. I can honestly see the Panthers now having a shot to run the regular season table. Who knows?

Alright gather the troops Redbirds, it's on to MSU on Saturday...xrotatehx

Tough to judge your post here...but quite frankly, these two teams were and are far from "being darn close to being even." Yesterday, the score indicated that the teams were close. Sorry, but that's the worst UNI has played all season and we were still the better team on the field. If we play that lackluster against SIU or YSU, it's an L on the schedule. ISU might be one of the better 2-3 teams, but close to UNI's overall talent level? Not even close.xsmhx

not to mention, for a large portion of the game, the refs "seemed" quite one sided giving ISU very generous spots and that phantom "fumble" recovery. calls were bad both ways...but man those refs were horrible. I swear Coach farley was ready to deck that ref.

On paper, UNI was better, on field, the better team won as well. Game over, move on to next saturday. Its good to have a bye week after 4 road games, my wallet was getting very thin!

birds, I'm darn happy to get out of Normal with a win too. The better team didn't win down there 2 years ago either; particularily the way that score ended up... The better team won yesterday, sometimes that doesn't happen. You can think what you want about the teams being close, but that is simply not true. Mr. Drone will struggle all season with the receivers you have left. Not having Laurent Robinson to lob the ball up to can make an average QB look like an average QB...it also makes it a lot tougher on the other receivers. I'm sorry, but for these teams to be considered "close", IlSU needed to beat Drake at home. You bring that Redbird team to the Dome or a neutral field, and try telling me that these two teams are close??xnonox xlolx

I haven't bought into UNI being the best team in the country just yet, but we are head and shoulders above the birds.xcoffeex

Mountain, listening to the game, watching the replay and comparing the teams head to head shows that these teams aren't on the same playing field. To suggest otherwise is laughable. This isn't getting over-inflated, it's a reality check for this particular redbird fan. We should have won by several more than 10, but I am happy with any win after 4 straight weeks on the road...xcoffeex Illinois State's players played their little hearts out, and winning in Normal hasn't come easy for the Panthers, but to suggest that Illinois State is somehow close in talent to UNI is funny to think about.xrolleyesx

Let me get this right Pantherfan, your "head and shoulders better" team WAS deadlocked in a 13-13 tie with about 5 minutes left. Hmmm?

And you point out the Drake game in your posts. If I remember correctly, last season UNI got a L right out of the gate to a Division II team. Personally, I NEVER considered that to be ANY indication of the quality of last season's Panthers. In fact, I thought they got ripped off by not being one of last season's playoff bound teams.

Okay, it looks like you're set with your idea of UNI and ISU not being close, and I am set with my idea that the two teams are closer than many people want to realize...so be it. I'm not certain how the rest of the Birds season will play out, but I KNOW ISU is a quality team. xcoolx

A good FCS team? Yes. On UNI and the other top 5-10 teams in FCS's level? No. My saying that our two teams aren't close is not to say that IlSu is a bad team; UNI is a legitimate top 5 FCS team, not many are on this teams level. Tied 13-13 late in the game was disappointing, but honestly, the Panther fans I talked to who make the trek to Normal weren't sweating too much(other than when Sanders went down for a short while.) as they could tell who the better team was. Losing to UND last season was bad for UNI last season, but move them up to FCS and they'd be a top 15-20 team at least. IlSu might still be a top 25 team, only time will tell; but the preseason had the birds ranked too high. Good luck with the rest of the season...

[B][I][SIZE=4]Cap'n Cat's Gateway Upset Special Of The Week

UNI was clearly the better team.

Did Redbird fans not see how easily we marched down that field before we hit the invisible wall known as the Red Zone? I mean we were getting 10-20 yard gains a play in that first half.

Redbird fans are acting like UNI played this amazingly perfect game while you guys sucked it up and still hung with us. Please. We both sucked yesterday. We just didn't suck as much.

Bottom line is: UNI played very poorly and we still beat ISU AT Normal by 10 points. The better team won, it's over.

i still havent figured out though, how ISU lost to drake...that just baffles me.

I guess we just need to call North Dakota and see what they think xwhistlex

North Dakota would beat 85% of the teams in FCS.

North Dakota would beat 85% of the teams in FCS.
And probably 20% of the FBS.

SOME, not all, UNI fans are pretty full of themselves, if they cannot take a little good-natured trash talking from an opposing teams fans.

Who can't take good natured trash talk? I was taking shots at people signing up for the message board just to talk trash. We also have a smack board. ;)

Not to burst your "we didn't play well" bubble Pantherfan, but yesterday was statistically the WORST game in 3 years that ISU QB Luke Drone has had as a starter...3 picks and 108 yards. Now THAT would be not playing well.

Aren't picks more of a sign of good defense? I mean, a lot o it has to do with the defensive schemes and the defenses holding onto the ball.

Drone is a good QB, but doesn't have any help.

But it was an indication. They were not a consistently good team. We deserved to be left out.
