View Full Version : Missouri State at Youngstown

What do you guys think?

YSU is #7 in this weeks AGS poll, MSU is 28th.

I know some on the YSU board view this as a 'break before real competition,' but I hope the Bears can prove them wrong.

MSU still has a potent offense, the defense needs to get better though. No injuries to speak of for MSU and I think YSU has a few, not sure though.

I think Youngstown will run away with this one.

My reasoning is that this is a conference game, where opponents know each other better as well as it being at the Ice Castle. But, with the way the Bears have been playing, they will definitely have their shot. If it was in Springfield, I would really like Missouri State's chances.

The Guins are really banged up right now (walking wounded). As bas as the injuries are at YSU, I would not take Jerry's Kid's U for granted xbawlingx I've heard that we might have lost James Terry for a while on "D" xnonono2x

BTW, Bears fans, use Bearmania.net until letsgobears is back. I forgot about that board, but it already has a football forum built in so it might as well become letsgobears jr. haha

True, but this situation is a little different. The Bears have a brand-spankin new (and efficient, if I might add) offense. YSU players/coaches have never laid eyes on most of the players that have been key to us being 3-1.

But yes, once you hit conference play, you have a better gauge as to what each team is all about, you have more film to look at, and you know who the opponent's go-to guys are, as opposed to earlier in the year, when scouting for most teams is a little more mysterious.

I dont know who said it, but James Terry isnt out for an extended period of time. He's banged up, but nothing too serious. He'll play in the game saturday. We have lost Irizarry at TE and kishman at tackle, but I think we can get through the injuries since they'll be close to season ending. Irizarry is 5 more weeks.

Yea, I seen on the two deep Terry is listed as a backup to Ward. Bush is also out so we're on the third TE. Althought, the Two Deep is meant to keep people guessing xrolleyesx

If you want to beat YSU:

RUSHING YARDAGE............... 825 341
Yards gained rushing........ 865 418
TDs Rushing................. 10 3
PASSING YARDAGE............... 544 734 ****
Att-Comp-Int................ 82-52-2 121-73-6
Average Per Pass............ 6.6 6.1
Average Per Catch........... 10.5 10.1 ****
Average Per Game............ 136.0 183.5
TDs Passing................. 3 4

Total Plays................. 258 242 ****
Average Yards Per Play... 5.3 4.4 ****

YSU traditionally tries to shut off an opponents run game & then let's them try to beat them with the pass. Problem so far in 2007, teams have been beating them with the pass ...10.1 average yards per pass and 183.5 yards per game. Just a few more things ...

-when YSU's run defense wants to step up, they can. They are one of only two teams to hold the Buckeye's Chris Wells under 100 yards in two years. The only team to hold him under 50 (in which he had more than 10 carries) yards in 2 years. Wells was 24 carries for 49-yards.

-4th-Down Pct................ 33% 50%
The Guins are not as strong as usual up front. They are giving up 1 out of every two attempts on 4th-down, so "go for it".

-They switched back to a 4-3 (from a 3-4) last year & will bring in a LB as an end to put pressure on the QB...this is why they average over 2 sacks per game. However, because of this they have a soft zone & the middle is open for short to medium passes all day.

TIME OF POSSESSION/GAME....... 31:00 29:00

Clearly they are not dominating the T.O.P., so just keep "plugging away".
Play your game & keep at it for 4-quarters.

It's alright, we'll bounce back. If we didn't have that onside kick returned for a TD EARLY in the 4th quarter and the bad interception at our own 30 in the 2nd quarter it would have been a different game.

We scored our last touchdown when MSU tried to kick an onside kick. The kick team overran the ball and the YSU kid was off for the races.

Congrats to the Guins, this was what was expected to happen. Our defense is just way too young right now, especially to hang with the experienced offense that YSU has.

As good as YSU's defense is, though, I'll take our 21 points. xthumbsupx

And if we didn't quit trying to score in the 4th it would have been a different game too.

i'm suprised Missouri state didnt run the ball more with #6, YSU struggled terribly tackling him, good power runner. broke 3 or 4 tackles each time he got a carry

other then that YSU defense did a great job of stopping the spread option that Missouri state was running

Good Job Guins

Douglas, lets keep it real....this is what YOU expected to happen....

lets be clear

Its NOT the Defense!!!!.....You cant make mistakes in regards to field position...its that simple....

The defense held them early when the score was 7-7, 14-7...and even 21-7 going into the half.....to punts

The offense did NOT take the opportunity given them by the Defense...that simple.....

Those First Half (YSU) scores were setup up by several ill advised decisions.....

The rest is history....

Sometimes I question our play calling. Like running up the middle with our speed RB on 3rd and 10 and getting like 1 yard.
