No. 6 McNEESE STATE 41, SOUTHERN UTAH 20
It was all McNeese State here Saturday night as the Cowboys rolled up a 41-20 decision over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds to improve to 3-0 on the year. Southern Utah fell to 0-4 on the season.
The Cowboys had a pair of early touchdown passes from Derrick Fourroux to Quinten Lawrence while Blake Bercegeay added a pair of field goals and Mark Fontenot tossed a three yard touchdown to Wesley Mangan to stake the Cowboys to a 27-0 lead heading into halftime.
“In the first half, we dominated the game, we didn’t have any turnovers,” said head coach Matt Viator. “You got to be happy with that.”
The Cowboys dominated the first half as they ran up a total of 252 yards while holding the Thunderbirds to 54 total first half yards, nine rushing and 45 passing.
After the half, it was more of the same from the Cowboys as sophomore Elrick Jones scored his first two career touchdowns on a five yard run and a 29 yard reception from Fourroux.
“It was good to be able to play a lot of people tonight,” noted Viator. “We had a chance to play more offensive linemen tonight, any time you can do that it’s a good thing.”
Bercegeay booted field goals of 22 and 30 yards, both coming before the break.
Bercegeay opened the scoring with a 22 yard field goal before Fourroux connected with Lawrence on a 40 yard touchdown to make it 10-0 McNeese.
