They had some of the most stupid rules. About time. They should actually be embarrassed.

Russell Wilson to Denver, Dominoes are falling.
Early reports are:

Denver gets - Russell Wilson, 2022 4th round pick
Seattle gets - QB Drew Lock, DL Shelby Harris, TE Noah Fant, 2022 1st round pick (#9), 2022 2nd round, 2022 5th round, 2023 1st round, 2023 2nd round

March 9th, 2022, 11:54 AM
The Seahawks have also informed Bobby Wagner that he will be released. Not unexpected for salary cap purposes - he may be back with a different contract.

If the trade becomes official and Wagner doesn't return, there will be no members of the "Run the damn ball" Super Bowl team on next season's roster. There will be one from the XLVIII winners as Benson Mayowa who left that offseason has since returned to the squad.

Shortsighted IMO.... it'll only be a matter a time before another Mahomes/Allen QB duel when each scores a TD on their opening possession and whoever is the first to get the ball for a second time in OT wins it without the other having a chance to get the ball again.

Chalupa Batman had the best idea when he said they should just play it normally where each team gets a possession and if they're still tied after that each team gets another possession so on and so forth until it's no longer tied after each team has had an equal number of possessions or there is a defensive score.

How many teams don't already have at least one minority "as an offensive assistant" that meets this rule? The league is taking credit for "diversity efforts" by announcing that the teams are required to do something they're already doing.

Yep, they always start (the regular season) the weekend after Labor Day. That's why there's usually some big college games on Labor Day Sunday and Monday... it's the only week of the college season where they don't have to compete with the NFL on Sunday and Monday nights.

Seeing a lot of criticism for McDaniels' 2 point try last night and I don't think people are thinking it through. Stopping Mahomes and company with 4.5 minutes left knowing all they need is a FG to win and then again in OT is a pretty tall order... maybe an impossible order given how the Raiders defense was playing on the 2nd half. Kicking the XP there for the tie gives you little to no chance at winning IMO. Going for 2 and getting it is fine because you get a lead, at least give yourself a chance to win in regulation, and put the pressure on the Chiefs but even going for it and missing it isn't the worst thing because you know the Chiefs will neuter their offensive play calling compared to if they were tied or trailing by 1 (not to mention forcing them to punt on 4th and short from midfield instead of going for it had they been tied or trailing).

That's exactly what happened allowing the Raiders to get it back and have a chance to win it with a FG at the end - their offense just didn't execute. I think you can second guess McDaniels more for going for it on 4th and 1 instead of trying a 56 yard FG for the win. But even that isn't the worst decision since you'd expect the chances of picking up a 4th and 1 are better than converting a 56 yard FG (that play call wasn't exactly ideal though) and Mahomes still would've had 40 seconds and timeouts to get the Chiefs back into FG range (ask the Bills about that).

Loved it when they were up by 10, early 4th qtr and goal at the 2 and they throw incomplete passes on 2 and 3rd down and then decide to go for it on 4th down and throw a pick and the Vikes return it back to the 30 or something. Christ, run three running plays, burn some clock and it you can’t get it in from the 2 on 3 running plays you might as well give it up. Pack stop the bleeding but they needed an OT FG.

BTW, Christian Watson, formerly of NDSU, had a receiving hat trick, becoming the first rookie since 1978 to do that.

Randy Moss had 3 receiving TD’s against Dallas on Thanksgiving day in his rookie year. His only 3 catches of the game too.

Interesting that is the name of the huge office complex in Downtown Detroit on the river. The "Renaissance Center" has a great rotating restaurant on the 70th floor of the hotel, similar to the one in Atlanta at Peachtree Plaza. Nice to see the Silver and Blue becoming relevant again.

Iggles will be without Lane Johnson for remainder of regular season, with hope he can play in playoffs. Assuming Iggles can get #1 seed, their first playoff game wouldn't be until 1/22 or 23, so close top a month recovery. Reported an abdominal injury. Driscoll has been a decent back up, but he ain't Lane Johnson, who hasn't given up a sack in 28 straight games. They should take care of business this week and rest a lot of the regulars.

Boy the NFL really loves putting Lambeau Field in their top time slots to the point where they break their own policy to get it on SNF in week 18. The obvious choice for SNF is Tennessee @ Jacksonville since the winner goes to the playoffs and the loser is done no matter what happens elsewhere. Now with Seattle playing before Detroit and Green Bay on Sunday if the Seahawks win the Lions playoff hopes are done before they even kick off - I thought the whole point of flex scheduling in week 18 was to make sure situations like that don't happen??? The Detroit/Green Bay and LA Rams/Seattle games should be played at the same time.

I see the Titans/Jaguars game is Saturday night, I’m guessing it’s been there since the schedule came out. If so moving it to Sunday would most likely upset a lot of fans who have long been planning the weekend around that game being Saturday night.

The Saturday games were not set until yesterday, along with the times for the Sunday games. One Sunday game still has a time pending because of the suspension of last night's Bills-Bengals game. Bengals-Ravens start time will depend on the outcome of the suspended game.

Not sure why it has to be so complicated... they could just use winning percentages and treat the BUF/CIN game as if it was a tie. Whatever, they're the NFL so they'll do what they want to do.

In this scenario, though, both teams still likely lose the opportunity to gain the AFC's top playoff spot. Here are the current records of the three teams vying for the AFC's top playoff seed, a first-round bye, and homefield advantage.

Kansas City: 13-3
Buffalo: 12-3
Cincinnati: 11-4

If the Buffalo/Cincinnati game counts as a tie, below would be the records (and winning %) if all three teams win in Week 18.

Kansas City 14-3 .823
Buffalo 13-3-1 .794
Cincinnati 12-4-1 .735

Unfortunately, Cincinnati and Buffalo both own the head-to-head tiebreaker against Kansas City, so whomever won the January 3 Monday Night Football game, still had a chance to earn the top overall AFC seed. Obviously, there is no perfect answer here, but counting the game as a tie doesn't really change the current situation, if Kansas City wins its final game. If Las Vegas somehow upsets Kansas City, then my entire scenario will be rendered a moot point.

The NFL Rules Manual includes the provision that in the case of a cancelled game, they will use winning percentages. The same manual states that no rule will be changed during a season. Why is this even a discussion and potential changes going up for a vote of owners?

The NFL gets the same TV money whether Kansas City, Buffalo, or Cincinnati is the AFC one-seed. Ticket revenue is basically a wash as all teams will sell out home playoff games and the differences in gate revenue are minimal across the affected teams (the three above and Baltimore).

Gate revenue isn't the only factor. You think Kansas City or Buffalo would be thrilled about letting ~$10m in economic impact slide out the door? There's a lot of money that gets made outside the stadium.

Yet they're assuming Cincinnati would've lost by awarding Buffalo the home game in a divisional round matchup.

I don’t know, I am not the folks calling for quotas here, I suppose to be consistent then yes, other ethnic groups are under represented in the NFL on the field. If you are gonna apply quotas and benchmarks then apply them across the board. That is how stupid this whole thing gets.

FUBeAR is gonna go against the grain here…

He started noticing what he started calling “Slide Tackles” in the early 2010’s as schools began teaching new tackling techniques - no more “face on the ball” or “face on the numbers” tackling to avoid targeting calls and because it is safer - or allegedly safer. FUBeAR disagrees, but that’s another argument. FUBeAR knows there was a lot of talk about the new tackling techniques revolving around “shoulder tackling,” but he was suspicious that Coaches were now also teaching this “Slide Tackling” - particularly to DB’s. Or maybe it was just player to player in sort of an emulation thing, but it is NOT good.

FUBeAR has seen a number of serious injuries from these “Slide Tackles” or it seems the name “Hip Drop Tackles” is more likely to ‘stick.’ Most notable of those was the horrible lower leg compound, complex fracture suffered by Mercer QB, Robert Riddle. (1:06:42 of this video - WARNING - It’s nasty!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFrXimbG0MI

Riddle had NFL potential. He tried to come back for a couple of years at Mercer and even spent a year in his hometown of Chattanooga, on the Mocs roster, trying to get back on the field, but the damage was just too great. He was never able to play again.

IFBO, these types of tackles are WAY more dangerous than the ‘low blocks’ which have almost (regrettably) been completely eliminated from the game. They are almost ‘designed’ to injure an extremely vulnerable part of Players’ bodies. Worse than low blocking, worse than clotheslining, worse than head slapping, worse than horse-collar tackling - all which have been eliminated.

FUBeAR is glad to see it finally getting some attention after seeing it proliferate for 10 years or so. NCAA needs to act on this one.

Two-hand touch. Since shoving a guy to the ground will be a 15-yard personal foul, the "skill position" players will travel to Europe to learn diving from the best that the Big Five Leagues have to offer.

Like FUBeAR said … against the grain.

How many of you ‘tough guys’ were ever taught to tackle by…

1) grabbing the ball carrier above the waist with your hands
2) lifting your feet off the ground
3) swinging your lower body under the ball carrier using your handhold as the pivot-point for your body swing?

This is the technique used on these tackles. If you can’t see it, you’re not trying to see it.

FUBeAR, (like all of you old guys…if you had decent Coaches) was taught to put his face (EYES UP) on the ball or the numbers, roll his hips, lift, wrap his arms violently, RUN HIS FEET, and drive violently through the tackle. To answer POD’s inane question..that’s how FUBeAR suggests “they” tackle…except slide your face by & use your shoulder now…so you don’t called for Targeting…even though you are more likely to injure yourself this way (but FUBeAR wouldn’t say the last part out loud).

FUBeAR saw and was troubled by this “Grab’n’Slide” or “Hip Drop” technique starting to arise about the time he was reading articles about ‘new’ shoulder-tackling techniques being taught everywhere. This was long before 2019, when Riddle was injured. FUBeAR Jr. and BearDownMU could vouch for this if they happen to troll by this thread.

Hate where we are with low blocking being removed from the game, with the crazy “Roughing the Passer” calls we see in the NFL, and with perfectly proper (and SAFE) Eyes-Up Face Tackles being ruled as Targeting…but these types of tibia & fibula destroying tackles are a different story…they are easy to see in most cases and need to be stopped…just like a horse-collar tackle.

Done…now y’all can go back to sharpening your shotguns and skinning the neighborhood dogs to make a nice coat for your cousin wives.

We weren't trained to tackle re your three bullet points and were taught to tackle in pretty much the manner you described in your post but, like you said, you can't really tackle like that now so what you are getting now is a result of that. By the time they get rid of most tackling techniques, it will be touch football because tackling is tough enough without all the restrictions.

Do you think "Win Fast" and "Win Now" are part of the NFL teams' mantra these days?

Tackling technique has gone in the toilet. So many times defensive players (usually LBs and DBs) are just launching their bodies toward the runners, like missiles. No driving the shoulder and wrapping up. Back in the 60's, in high school, it was drive the shoulder and wrap up. Then in the 70's, emphasis switched using the head into the numbers, which imo, is nuts. The false security of the "improved" helmets led to using the head/helmet was a weapon, not realizing that the 'cannon ball' of the head is attached to a fragile column of bones in the neck. Football has obvious risk with its collisions, but the question of the degree of risk. It's one thing to break a leg or dislocate a shoulder. The great majority of the time the injuries heal and the player, even if his playing days are over, still will have his cognition and life; as opposed to life-long paralysis and/or premature death.

On a related matter, it has been debated that going to the 'hard shell' helmets and face guards also contributed to the rise in serious head/neck injuries due to the false sense of security of the head inside an "shatterproof shell". The problem is that many concussions do not arise from the blow to the head, but due to the 'whipping" of the neck after the blow. When you watch the tapes in slow motion, you see the player's head swing back and forth off of the other object or ground. What is going on INSIDE the skull is where the concussion arises. The brain floats inside the skull in a special fluid. The brain's exterior is lined with millions of fine "hairs" that are important signal receptors. If the brain is repeated 'whipped' back and forth, the brain slams up against the skull resulting in the shearing of these hairs. When this occurs repetitively long term damage will result. Seems to me, if we returned to the old leather helmets, players would be less inclined to "lead with their head" and use their shoulders and arms. The face masks can also act as 'fulcrums' to snap the head back and forth. The players in the 1930s-early '50s would certainly experience more broken noses than today, but rather that, than a broken neck. My head is hurting....

Vegas placing a 1.5 point give to the Chiefs?? I think the Eagles will comfortably cover that. KC has some great athletes (Mahomes, Kelce, Jones), but I see Philly has having a more balanced team by units. Both lines have had excellent continuity this year, the receiving corps has the best WR tandem in the League, plus an excellent TE. The running game is the most effective in the League. Philly has played turnover free ball in the playoffs and that is usually the prime factor in such a big game. The defensive secondary is the best unit in the League.
School Districts in eastern PA are already going to have 2 hour delay start on Monday, February 13, so the kids can stay up an watch the game Sunday night. The Delaware and Lehigh Valley's are primed, and light standards greased!xdrunkyx

The AFC is much better, especially at the top. The Eagles had a fairly easy schedule and struggled with 3 of the 4 AFC South teams. Unless the Eagles defense shuts down the Chiefs offense or gets 1 or more defensive TDs, I wouldn't be surprised if the Chiefs win by 2+ scores.

Ticky tack yes but far from an abomination.

After watching the Eagles benefit from a couple of similar calls against the 49ers last game it’s joyous to watch Eagles fans whining now that it goes against them.

one of the announcers (Greg Olson, maybe?) mentioned on one play that a tackle can't report in as eligible on one play, and then be ineligible on the next play.
is that true? I had never heard of that rule before.
Or did I misunderstand what he was saying?

I thought he was saying a tackle couldn’t be eligible two plays in a row. I could be wrong though.

He could report as eligible again but had to report every play. This is NFL only. No such thing as reporting in NCAA rules.

It was the first time in the 2nd half that an Eagles defender was within 5 yards of a Chiefs receiver, the ref was in shock and assumed it had to be because of holding. [emoji23]

Was it (the hold) worse than others that went uncalled throughout the game? Certainly not and as such shouldn't have been called.

Was it a hold? According to James Bradberry in his post-game media availability "It was holding, I tugged his jersey." Bradberry is obviously a stand-up guy and is to be applauded for his candor.

I was super surprised in a good way to hear that. I was passively rooting for the Chiefs but thought that was a completely bogus call - that could've been called 20 times before last night if they're going to get that technical about it. It might've robbed us of a tremendous finish and perhaps even overtime.

But I'm sure the referee who made that call appreciates Bradberry not pouring more gasoline on the fire because if I know Philly fans there is/was going to be some very coarse things said to that referee and his family most likely that Bradberry's comments hopefully reduced or eliminated altogether.

Glad the eagles lost and the call might have been ticky tack but it was still a penalty. Of course eagles fans aren't mentioning all of the no calls they got thru the entire game. Lane Johnson false started about 5 times, they had at least 2 delay of games not called, they had a clear PI not called. Cry eagles cry! xlolx

If the league were to make false starts by offensive tackles a point of emphasis next season, the number of false start penalties would increase by 10-12 per game until the players adjust. Then the number of sacks would go up by about 20% because of the tackles not getting a head start. Currently, if the defensive end moves at the same time as the tackle, it's called as offside because he's across the line at the snap.

It was definitely ticky tack. But after seeing the Eagles benefit from a couple of similar calls in the NFC championship game (and then call anyone pointing it out whiners) this 49er fan finds it hilarious and has ZERO sympathy for them.

I wondered when it happened if the defensive TD scored by the Chiefs when Hurts just dropped the ball would come back to bite the Eagles. It did.

Lane Johnson does not jump the gun. After the 49ers game they ran numerous replays of his 'kick start' coming out of formation and every time his right leg began to move, Kelce was sliding the ball on the snap. Lineman does not have to wait for the QB to have the ball in his hands, he an begin moving when the ball starts to move, even if it is on the turf.

I agree the PI call was wrong because they hadn't been calling contact all night. Like basketball, if your going to let them play, be consistent. Yes, Bradberry had his hand on him, but he didn't impede the receiver's ability to move in the direction he wanted. Pass was way overthrown. However, I don't see that as costing the Eagles the game. They shot themselves on numerous earlier plays the were much more significant. Obviously, the Hurts fumble for a TD, the lousy punt that set up the return to the 5 yard line, as well as the play before on 3rd and 3 or 4, when they had a blocking screw up that required them to punt on 4th and 6. Had the line made the correct block, the RB would have gone for 5-10 yards. Kelce in an interview took responsibility for making a mistake on his call, but not sure if he was just covering for his left guard and tackle. Eagles DC also got out coached in the second half. I couldn't see any real adjustments made . Eagles had a great season and didn't play their best on defense and special teams was a known Achilles heel that raised its ugly head. Hopefully, that area gets addressed in off-season.
