The Boston Red Sox tonight became the first team in 2007 to clinch a spot in the playoffs. With the combination of a Boston win and Detroit loss the Sox assured themselves of atleast the AL Wild Card.
Boston used a late inning comeback to finish of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays who took the lead in the 7th on Carlos Pena's second homer of the night. Jason Varitek lead off the 9th with a solo homer and Eric Hinske followed with a double. Two batters later Julio Lugo homered to make it 8-6.
Jacoby Ellsbury then followed with the Sox second double of the inning. Two batters later David Ortiz was intentionally walked setting up 1st and 3rd with two down.
Jonathan Papelbon came in for the 9th to lock down the win for Boston.
The Red Sox also maintained their 2.5 game lead on New York in the AL East and lowered their magic number to 6.

Though the Sox aren't my primary team (but they have been my favorite AL team for 20+ years), do they really want to be in the playoffs as a wild card if they blow the division race?
I'm not sure I'd want to have to go through that after having blown a 14 game lead (or whatever it was), but rather slip off into the off season quietly without much fanfare. Particularly since it would likely mean a series against the Evil Empire with them having the home field advantage.

Yankees have 8 games left Boston 7... New York needs to win 3 more then Boston over that span in order for NY to win the division.... very unlikely.

Boston will win the division. I've been sayin that for awhile now, the Yanks have closed the gap which is great, but the division is the Sox, I'd love to be wrong though xnodx

Hey, that is the best signature graphic on AGS. Nice job. I was just telling someone the other day how the Marshall win was Ricky Santos' 3rd against a D1 opponent. That's HUGE!
As for the Sox, I'd like them to win the division... and the only celebration I want to see is after beating a National League team

Congrats on the playoff berth to Boston, but the division race is heatin' up. Yanks beat Toronto as Moose gets his 250th career win and the Sox lose as Wakefield goes down AT TAMPAxeekxxeekx

Dunno, the Yanks surely wouldn't be overjoyed with facing the Angels in the postseason.
