Why not? At the very least Wofford should be ahead of all of the one-loss teams that all lost to FBS teams. Wofford should be No. 4 or 5 at worst. No one else in FCS had beaten App State in almost two years.

I don't think you would put New Hampshire ahead of them (loss at JMU, defense played horrendously), or Nicholls State. McNeese beat a weak FBS (though McNeese is a fine team). Northern Iowa and North Dakota State not only beat FBS teams, they beat them pretty badly. Southern Illinois, not sure how to compare their FBS win.

#1 UMass based on 4-0, 4 D-I wins (national runners-up, not sure how they haven't been #2 all year)
#2 UNI - 4-0, 3 D-I wins, all on the road including 1 FBS
#3 NDSU - 3-0, 3 D-I wins, 1 over ranked SHSU, 1 FBS
#4 SIU - 4-0, 3 D-I wins, 1 win over FBS
#5 Montana - 3-0, 2 D-I wins
followed by Delaware, Appalachian (they still are a dangerous team but I'm sure teams will love the possibility of avoiding a trip through Boone come Nov/Dec), Hofstra, Youngstown State, JMU, UNH, and Wofford all getting top 10 consideration.

Good thing the Committee doesn't take this poll seriously Proud Griz Man. It's a bunch of internet message board posters. Until someone beats us there is no reason not to think we aren't as good as last year. Hauck always cruises in the early season and keeps the Offense and Defense as simple as possible as not to give the Big Sky foes complete looks at our plays and defenses. We have run maybe 1/3 of our playbook and we aren't even blitzing much. We've been on cruise control, we haven't even thrown a long pass till today, we threw one today. See you all in the playoffs when we turn it up and really bring the dogs and an 11-0 record.xnodx Vote us whatever you want because right now it means nothing. Vote us out of the top 25.xlolx

It has nothing to do with what you did last year or last week. Polls are all about "what have you done for me lately?"
App. State lost and should drop but not necessarily out of the top 5, that is for the voters to decide.
If everyone went by your logic then most teams would never move from their spots after losses to top 25 teams. Using an FBS analogy, UM would have still played OSU for the "national championship" last year too.

No that's what happens when you buyout contracts as opposed to playing a home and home or in the case of SDSU a two for one. SDSU visits you guys twice for one stinking return game. They play you twice on the Road and then you buyout the contract. Defend it if you will, yeah the buyouts in the contract so you can say you honored it but everyone in FCS knows that if they can schedule you they dam well better get the first one at home or forget it. Your AD won't sign a contract with a large buyout. Of course it's only Montana with Budget issues to figure out.

Sorry, I should have noted that the posted games were not a complete schedule. The posted games were not meant to be a comparison of schedules (apples & oranges) but to point out the fact that Montana has played its share of "tough" games particularly the FBS games from major conferences - which should dispell the notion that Montana is dodging the competition. The NDSU "cupcakes" were listed to illustrate the fact that even the Bison might be accused of schedule padding in any given year.
The bottom line?
We're not so different, nor is any other school above reproach.
This year (of the last five) our schedule might be fairly criticized, and many are taking the opportunity to do so.
I don't have a problem with calling our schedule what it is...weak, but fair-minded individuals ought to at least ascribe accurate motivation to the reason. Don't you agree?

The biggest thing I take notion with is that "some" Montana fans think as long as you don't lose you shouldn't drop in the rankings. That's taking a limited view of the entire poll IMHO. If your ranked #2 and the 3rd and 4th place teams beat a FBS team or highly ranked FCS team when compared to you meeting neither of those two criteria then I don't think you should be able to stake a claim to that ranking. It's not just about who you beat but who the others have beat as well. In the end it really doesn't matter as we all know since it's all decided at the end of the season. I'll be the first to admit for that I am jealous and sad for our players who won't be able to compete when they so overwhelmingly deserve to.

The "holic" to your handle is making a lot of sense with posts like that. Beating the sisters of the poor is not running away from the pack; it's doing what you should do against weaker competition.
Your weak schedule and sub-par conference (this year) will be Montana's undoing. The Griz simply won't be battle-tested.
This will probably be mistaken by some as me saying that the Griz are a bad team; quite the opposite. I THINK they're probably a pretty damn good team, but simply haven't faced competition that proves it.

NDSU looks like a good team, but a win over CMU is no more impressive than Mcneese's win over ULL.. Both are weak conferences overall and even a conference champion from either of those conferences gets manhandled by a lot of FCS teams... Also, NDSU beat a very bad SFA team and a SHS team that struggled againest Angelo state? SHS May have put up some points on them, but as usual they have no Defense, which will show how bad they are next week againest OSU...
Montana has beaten 3 weak opponents, but has beat them Convincingly..
App, beat michigan, but lost soundly to a Fellow conference mate. They drop to about #7 or #8..
Wofford move up, but not into the top 5.. You can't put them ahead of other undefeated FCS teams who have wins againest an FBS team, while they have a loss againest an FBS team..
UMASS has 4 impressive wins, but againest so-so competition. Not exactly murderor's row.
UNI, 4 good wins also and againest a FBS opponent who also beat a another FBS/bcs team.
I'd give the #1 spot to UNI at this point, followed by UMASS, NDSU, Montana , Mcneese and SIU.

Let me tell you a secret.
The polls don't mean anything. Only one poll matters.
The PSC poll at the end of the year (that determines seeding) is the only poll that matters because it determines how far into the play-offs you get home games (then, only for the top 4 teams - 2 actually). All the rest of this dancing is poppycock.
I think I know the real source of your animosity, It does suck that this team (seniors) will never get to play in the play-offs, and it may be a long time before you see another Bison team this good.
The polls are your validation, your championship - I feel for ya.

I'm still working on my #1 pick, so I can't answer, leaning toward UNI, but not sure.
A couple of notes:
1) Scheduling: I bet it is hard for Montana to schedule other teams, but it doesn't look like you tried hard this year. I also know how hard App. State had to work. They put together an interesting schedule with 1 FBS school, 1 Big Sky school (Yes, I know weak conference!!), a Big South school, and a lower division school.
2) MAC conference, Do you really want to mess with this conference? Kent State has beaten ISU as has Toledo. BGSU beat Minn and gave Mich State all it could handle. Ball State nearly took Nebraska out. This conference is tougher than maybe the ACC or Big 12.
3) To Wofford fans: How you lost so big to that patheteic NCSU team is beyond me. That is the worst team I have seen in a long time.

I don't post often but you Bison fans are beginning to be a bit annoying. I have been a huge Bison supporter and would have loved to seen you guys in the BSC. I will be extremely happy when you can play for the title because your rantings about how good you are and how overrated the Griz are is getting to be real boring. It is no secret this years OOC games were less than stellar. No one has complained more than most Griz fans themselves. BUT THE PLAYERS DON'T SCHEDULE THE GAMES! We have a great group of kids that are going to go far this year. They take one game at a time, no matter the other team's reputation. They will play all comers that are put before them all the way through the playoffs.
I could care less who is number 1 this week. NDSU, you are great, you are wonderful, you are the biggest baddest FCS team in the land! You have my vote to be #1 all year and I will even vote for you to be #1 after the championship game because obviously you will still be the best no matter who has the trophy.
We didn't make the rules, the fans and the players didn't schedule the games. The Griz will continue to slowly, methodically, mechanically move toward the games that really count and then we'll see how good they really are. But, oh yeah, I forgot...that won't matter because the Bison are still the best in all the land!

I admit that some Bison are being a bit annoying, but I think that most of us Bison know that Montana has a great team this year and has a very good shot at the Nat Champ.
However, that doesn't change the fact that Montana isn't playing a very difficult schedule. You guys in Montana will at least get a chance to shut up all the naysayers in the playoffs, unfortunately the NCAA deems us unworthy of the playoffs.

You had me right up to the end. You are worthy, but NDSU knew the rules when you moved up. It is no one's fault or a grand conspiracy to keep the best team in the land from playing for a championship. It is what it is and it was not set up to keep the Bison from playing.
And by the way, you can call Albany not very difficult if you like but they earned my respect today. Enough said.

Why should you care what "some" Montana fans think?
Why should Montana fans care what you think?
Let me tell you a secret.
The polls don't mean anything. Only one poll matters.
The PSC poll at the end of the year (that determines seeding) is the only poll that matters because it determines how far into the play-offs you get home games (then, only for the top 4 teams - 2 actually). All the rest of this dancing is poppycock.
I think I know the real source of your animosity, It does suck that this team (seniors) will never get to play in the play-offs, and it may be a long time before you see another Bison team this good.
The polls are your validation, your championship - I feel for ya.
That post (minus the "and it may be a long time before you see another Bison team this good.") is exactly how I feel. Sad, but true.

I dont care if we are number 1 or number 2 but there is no reason UMass should be lower then two when they came in 3rd and the number 1 team fell.
Colgate is 2-1(umass loss)
Holy Cross is 2-1(umass loss)
Towson is 2-2(losses to UMass and Delaware)
Maine is 1-3(they just stink)

Hey, I said nothing about NDSU being ranked #1, I was replying to a GSU poster that said Central Michigan is no Iowa State ....I replied by saying Toledo beat Iowa State and Central Michigan Killed Toledo.
I said it before and I'll say it again, Since we are in the FCS and have a playoff system in place sooner or later we'll all know who's #1..... Unless of course NDSU goes undefeated.... That would sure throw a wrench in the whole #1 argument

I was really upset at the outcome yesterday with the Terriers sticking it to us like they did but there are some positives. We've been walking around with a huge target on us for a long time, and it's at least partially removed now. We're no longer number one, and can now focus on the fundamentals again and get off the whole "we beat MI" thing. Let someone else have the target on them for a while, and we'll hopefully be able to get ourselves realigned and be competitive for the balance of the season.

1) UMass

3) UNI
4) Appy State
5) Montana
--Its early in the season, and the Griz may be better than a 5 ranking. Just win and everything will work out by the time the playoff seedings come around.
--I know that Appy had a tough loss yesterday, but it's hard to drop them out of the top 5. They beat Michigan in the Big House. Need I say more?
--I'm a UNI fan, but I don't think our schedule justifies a number 1 ranking. ISU's victory over Iowa notwithstanding (where ISU didn't score a single touchdown), this ISU team has looked MISERABLE this year. ISU was a good win, a rivalry win, but I don't think anyone should get too carried away about it. Besides that game, we got wins against an SDSU team that doesn't look as good this year, Drake, and a D II. We've done great work on the road, and much like other teams in the top five, could be the best team in the nation. However, I still think UNI has something to prove before they deserve the ranking.
--NDSU is a monster. For the love of football, can the NCAA please let them in the Playoffs this year?
-- UMass' victories over FCS teams are simply too difficult to ignore. If they don't hold their own against BC this weekend, I think NDSU and UMass should switch rankings. However, I just don't get how you can't give them the #1 as of right now.
Don't post much on this board, but this discussion was too interesting to avoid.

Maybe teams don't want to play the Griz because they are called "cupcakes" when the Griz beat them, at least back east.
The Big Sky is not a weak conference. The Griz will be battle tested at the end of the year, playing in Flagstaff and Bozeman.
As far as #1, I had the Griz there in the preseason, knocking them down a notch when App State beat Michigan (because, you know, Michigan). App State loses, Griz beat Albany, UNI beat Drake, UMass beat Maine, JMU beat Coastal, none of these games are impressive so stick to the status quo and not make it any harder than it already is, UM #1 this week (subject to change next week and weeks to come).

So you drop Appy St to only #2 - does that mean you're putting Wofford #1? Sure playing at Wofford was tough, but Wofford took it to them and beat them - no fluke play, no lucky to even be in it - Wofford beat them. There are plenty of FCS teams who don't have an FCS loss that I'm putting Appy St behind for the time being - if Appy St is good enough they'll move back up the polls with ease as others lose down the road.

How about Wofford as No. 1? The king is dead (at least temporarily). Long live the king. The Terriers' only loss is to an FBS team.
A win over the #1 does not constitute that the victor should hold the top spot. Was Coastal #1 after they defeated #1 James Madison? Nope. So thier only loss is to an FBS school, but they are on par with schools in thier Division. Wofford should be up there, but not #1.
AppState beat a FBS school this year, should that keep them in the Top 5?
I think UNI deserves the 1 Spot. Just my opinion.

I have posted way too much on this thread...but Montana has done everything expected of them. Today for example, we garnered 564 yards of total offense, with 281 yards rushing and 273 yards passing. Albany had 365 total yards in the game. Montana is on the move, and we are gaining steam. Say what you want, but know that Montana is running away from the pack. We will just play our game and let you guys fumble around on figuring out ways to put us down. Thankyou for your time!
Ok, I must qualify this by saying that I have the utmost respect for the Griz, but I kinda laughed when I read this. Why? Not because it's not true, which it is, but because you could replace "Montana" with "San Diego" and it really smells of last year's bitchfest... xlolx
Sometimes doing everything you're expected to do is not enough. When others are doing everything they're expected to do and MORE it gives them just the slightest edge over you. xnodx

Don't get me wrong the Griz are a very good team, but you have to compare strength of schedule to this point of the season, because of that they do not deserve the number one ranking. I think what everyone needs to understand is that the AGS poll is basically a "strength of schedule" poll. Obviously, Montana cannot compete in that poll, even if they "might" (I don't know any more than you do) be the best team in the FCS and win all of their games decisively.
I won't think anyone on here is dissing UM unless and until the Griz win some playoff games and somebody (probably Bison fans) start up about how they didn't deserve to have the game at home. I'm sure it'll happen though.

Is it worth pointing out that Montana's opponents have the exact same number of wins over D-I teams that NDSU's opponents have (1)? That said, I have no problems ranking NDSU, UNI, and UMass over Montana right now. The higher you are ranked the bigger the fall.

1. App State
2. NDSU
3. JMU
4. N Iowa
In the end ASU will be the team to beat whether they lost last week or not.

Yeah, who cares about the regular season - heck, the polls should be static from the preseason poll until just after the championship! xlolx xlolx xrolleyesx

Agreed.
Heck, I expect Delaware, for the second week in a row, to actually drop following an impressive victory.

Do polls rank teams in order of how good they are or who they beat last?? If it is according to how good teams are then my rankings stand as I've indicated. If it goes according to upsets, fluke wins, etc. then Wofford is ranked ahead of Michigan if you took all schools into account. I DON'T THINK SO!!
If the playoffs were held today I'd put my money on ASU.

Agree with this. The climb to the #1 ranking is extremely steep this year as there are a dozen or so excellent teams.
Gonna be quite a year in FCS. Whoever gets the title trophy this year should hold it very high.
