Looked identical to the one the Eagles ran, i believe it was against Arizona. Koy Detmer flipped the ball just like LSU's holder did.

I still liked NDSU's fake punt out of their own end zone against SHS better.
SHS forgot to cover one of the gunners so the punter just tossed the ball out to him for a huge catch and run out near the 40 or so.

I was just going to post that. It was almost exactly the same play.
You are right JSO, it is a very cool FG fake.

"Voice of the Tigers" Jim Hawthorne after the fake ...
"How 'bout that ole ball coach!"
Auburn did the same thing to LSU at Tiger Stadium late in the game in TeleTubberville's first year.
Final score - Auburn 49, LSU 7

Loved it! I was at the game in the 2nd row from the field in that endzone. We went NUTS because NO ONE was expecting a fake at that point. We were all kinda off mad at the way the play calling was going.
You have to love giving Spurrier a taste of his own medicine.

My favorite part was Spurrier chuckling on the sideline!

Nice play, and perfectly executed too
Helps to have a kicker who can run, also

WHY is that play legal in college? The holder is obviously allowed to have his knee on the ground when they kick it, but IMO they should NOT be allowed to have their knee down and have the play be live. If the QB took a shotgun snap with his knee on the ground he's down. If you catch a punt with a knee on the ground your down. xconfusedx xconfusedx

That's a good point. There must be some exception in the rule book. A lot of fake FG's start with a snap to the holder who is on one knee.

If the refs got it wrong, then how can you ever have a fake field goal in college? The holder's knee is on the ground. There must be some special rule regarding this.

Ball Declared Dead
ARTICLE 3. A live ball becomes dead and an official shall sound his whistle
or declare it dead:
a. When it goes out of bounds other than a kick that scores a field goal
after touching the uprights or crossbar, when a runner is out of bounds,
or when a runner is so held that his forward progress is stopped. When
in question, the ball is dead (A.R. 4-2-1-II).
b. When any part of the runner’s body, except his hand or foot, touches
the ground or when the runner is tackled or otherwise falls and loses
possession of the ball as he contacts the ground with any part of his
body, except his hand or foot. (Exception: The ball remains alive when
an offensive player has simulated a kick or is in position to kick the ball
held for a place kick by a teammate. The ball may be kicked, passed or
advanced by rule) (A.R. 4-1-3-I).

Montana has done something similar where the holder throws it between his legs...pretty cool either way.

I know you answered this Hen, but on the same note, why, when the QB spikes the ball, is it not intentional grounding?

Illegal Forward Pass
ARTICLE 2. A forward pass is illegal:
a. If thrown by a Team A player who is beyond the neutral zone [S35 and
S9].
b. If thrown by a Team B player or if thrown by a Team A player after team
possession has changed during the down [S35].
c. If it is the second forward pass by Team A during the same down [S35
and S9].
d. If, to conserve time, the pass is not thrown immediately after the ball is
first controlled after the snap or is thrown after the ball has touched the
ground. If, to conserve time, the pass is thrown where no eligible Team A
player has a reasonable opportunity to catch it (A.R. 7-3-2-II-VIII) [S35
and S9].
e. If thrown from in or behind the neutral zone after a runner in possession
of the ball has gone beyond the neutral zone [S35 and S9].
PENALTY—Five yards from the spot of the foul; also loss of down if by
Team A before team possession changes during a scrimmage
down (A.R. 3-4-3-IV and A.R. 7-3-2-II) [S35 and S9].
f. If, to save loss of yardage, a forward pass is thrown where no eligible
Team A player has a reasonable opportunity to catch it. When in question, the Team A player has a reasonable opportunity to catch the pass (A.R. 7-3-2-I) [S36 and S9].

I think the rule is bad... I would liken it to a QB taking a knee and then throwing the ball. IMO if you want to fake a FG, it should have to go either to the kicker or the snapper must stand up (or squat like that little receiver for LSU did on the hidden play).

If the holder was considered down while on one knee, no FG would ever be kicked - the ball would be dead. A dead ball is a dead ball - if it isn't dead for the kicker to kick, it isn't dead for the holder to throw. The rule makes sense to me.
