View Full Version : can Wofford hang with Appalachian?

I say that it's according. If the Terriers can hold on to the ball, something they failed to do against NC State, and avoid shooting themselves in the foot with penalties (like they have been doing all year), they have a decent chance to be in the game in the 4th quarter with a chance to pull off a big upset. In other words, the Terriers need to play about a perfect game to have a chance. And if the Terriers do indeed prevail, I would suspect that an ASU turnover or two will play no small part in it. So in summary, can the Terriers win? It's admittedly not extremely likely, but there's a chance. I'll be there just in case! But I have the ultimate respect for the Mountaineer program and what they can do. I doubt very seriously if App is going to be overlooking us simply because this is a game that could have a great baring on the Southern Conference title. We Terriers MUST take our A+ game out there Saturday, and hope Appalachian brings their B game down from Boone. An A+ App effort may be too tough for anyone in the FCS or even a lot of those in the FBS to overcome!

No, you want them to bring their A game....that way if you win you can say you beat the best team on their best day.

Didn't you guys only lose 14-7 at the Rock last year? And don't you have a better team this year? I'd say your chances are pretty good.

Well, it could be possible that I have ASU on too much of a pedestal because of the Michigan game. In any event, ASU is damned good. We shall see how we do! Like I said before, I do think we can win if we play mistake free.

I think Wofford can win this game and I have a lot of respect for what Coach Ayers has done at Wofford. I think this year's Terrier team is really good as well. That being said, I do not think this game is going to be as close as many people believe and here is why. In 2005, App smoked Wofford down in Spartanburg. Wofford did not play well at all defensively in that game and their offense faltered in the second half trying to play from behind. Last year seemed to be much of the same early on with App scoring both of their TD's early in the first half. It seemed to me they put it on cruise control and all of the sudden they were clinging to a TD lead late in the game. I think they lost focus after they put the two quick scores on the board not to mention another score they muffed on a turnover right before they were about to punch it in. I don't think Woff's defense will step up like they did last year with the big plays and I think App scores early and often with the Terriers not able to keep pace... I do not think App is invincible like many fans. I actually think we will lose, most likely to Furman if not them I'd put my money on Ga Southern (I will talk more about why when that game comes up). I just think many people are way overhyping Wofford because the game last year was close and ASU definitely pays attention to things like that (ie: UTC last year). Most will probably disagree with me but we will see for ourselves come Saturday.

I completely agree with you Jerbear. And to emphasize what he said, it's not because I disrespect Wofford's program or their team this year. I honestly believe our boys are going to come out ready to show last year's game was a fluke.

I will expect another tough game from Wofford. If it ends up being easier than that ... great!

The expectations of us ASU fans have gotten a little lofty after the success of the last couple of years. Understandable, perhaps, but still ... we're not going to win every game by 3 TDs. The Greensboro News and Record described ASU's performance last week as "out of sync" after a 2TD win over a strong NAU team.

I'll take a victory over a ranked team by a single point and be happy with it, as long as we get the victory.

I think we can hang with them. We just play typical Wofford football, controlling the ball with minimal errors, and we can definitely win this game. I look forward to Wofford being on ESPN once we beat ASU.

I think you are correct with the above statement. If we play like we did last yr., the game will be very close with Wofford having a good chance to win.

This is such a fascinating matchup. If last year's game had been 42-7 instead of 14-7, Wofford might not be the #13 team right now. I think a lot of people have given them credit for hanging close with the Mountaineers in KBS. That's not all they've done, of course - they got over a 1-3 start to take care of business, for the most part, in conference play.

I don't usually throw around intangible terms like this (because they are generally 100% worthless), but their season-ending 6-1 run last year showed poise and guts. They'll need that to play with ASU, what with all the hype surrounding the Mountaineers these days.

I like the "fluke" aspect of this game - ASU wants to show everyone that 14-7 was a fluke, the point last season where the Mountaineers were at their rock-bottom worst as a team (they'll want to do the same thing against Georgia Southern, btw). They want to make a statement, much the way they did against Furman last year - that this team is scary good, a cut well-above the rest.

Wofford wants to show that there was no fluke, that it's no mistake they've won 8 of their last 10 games, that they're more-than-capable of running with (even beating) the best of the best.

There are two kinds of unreasonable picks in this one: those that have ASU winning by more than three touchdowns and those that have Wofford winning by more than one.

I can see Wofford putting 18-24 points on the board. The question is - will ASU score 21 or will it be 45?

The thing that drives me nuts in this one is the way people have started picking against ASU, not because of any semblance of football understanding/analysis, but because they're getting off on the potential for an "underdog dethrones vaunted frontrunners" plotline. If you think the Mountaineers will lose because you foresee holes or mistakes in their play, fine. If you want the Mountaineers to lose because it would rival Air Bud 2: Golden Receiver in terms of schmaltzy, straight-to-DVD-intrigue, that's fine, too. Just don't dress it up as an educated pick.

I agree....was at game and thinking the same as your statement. What scares me is the hush-hush part as that could indicate perhaps the specialists aren't quite sure just how serious the injury is...this was my biggest fear when the Michigan game was announced given AE's size and his fearlessness....

Nope, no one will hang with App. State this year. I'll be surprised if anyone gets within 14 points all season including the playoffs. I haven't seen a FCS school assemble so much talent since 1996 Marshall. How many NC's in a row till you guys go FBS? I would think that with the national press and if you were to add 12,000 seats you could go straight to the C-USA and skip the Sun Belt.

I saw that rumor on Mountaineer Message Board. Wouldn't put much stock in that as a source, but the longer this goes on the more concerned I become that it's more serious than has been let on. I did see AE warming up before the home opener and he looked fine throwing short-medium passes. Not favoring his shoulder in anyway that was obvious.

I know from talking to kicker Julian Rauch last Saturday night that AE was hurt BEFORE the Michigan game.

The 2005 game was ugly, but the Terriers that year were playing a lot of freshmen and sophomores who were unfortunately not yet ready for prime-time, and gave out (gave up) in the second half. Those guys are now Juniors and Seniors and should come ready to play. If Wofford can keep it close for three quarters, we have the chance to make something happen in the fourth to win the game.

I agree Wofford is good enough. Not sure they have enough speed to catch us.

I disagree that ASU's D is somehow less than in past years. It has surprised me how well the D-line freshman have played. They looked pretty good against the giant Michigan O-line. Although by the end of the game, the ASU starters were absolutely exhausted, in the first half ASU's D looked pretty darn good. At one point w/ 3 minutes to go in 2nd qtr., ASU was up 28 - 14.

We'll see if Wofford can move the ball. Maybe they can. If they can get 3.5 yards per carry, hold on to the ball, and keep it close, tomorrow's game could be a good one. I suspect Wofford will experience problems from the outset with ASU's speed.

ASU88
September 21st, 2007, 04:22 PM
ASU's defense did look a bit "bend but don't break" against NAU. They moved the ball pretty well for much of the game. So did Michigan.

What the App St defense does a good job of is not giving up too many big plays. Opponets' drives can be long with many plays and more opportunities for penalties and turnovers which end up keeping thepoints off the board.

It will be interesting to watch the ASU D / Wofford O matchup tomorrow.

App's DL has done very well this year even against NAU's spread. With our secondary they have to do their roles and that is all. Assignment football will beat Wofford.

Offensively our OL will control the line of scrimmage. Given that it will be up to the skill people to make plays.

However, I do believe the impressive # of yards Woffords ground game has gotten over the past few games will go down against the App. State defense.

Everyone 'stacks the box' against Wofford, they run the option. It is true that App St's D-line is not what is has been on the NC teams, though its still quite good.

In any case, I doubt Wofford will pull the upset. I think the Terriers will move the ball decently but, regardless of App's QB, I think the athleticism gap is too great between App's skill players and Wofford's LBs/DBs.

I'm taking ASU and 7.

I think Wofford is capable of winning the game, but that would mean that 1. the option is clicking, and 2. they hog the ball. I think that #1 will be much easier for them than #2, which would mean no turnovers and good clock management. Being a student of the wishbone/option (since we used to give a clinic on it in Chucktown), Wofford's undoing will be that at some point in the game, they will get down by two scores and won't have enough time to make it all up.

It is going to be a good game, regardless.

Exactly. ASU has the best Free Safety and two of the best Corners in FCS football, to go along with a talented group of big LB's. Last years game vs Wofford was the first real test for Edwards (after games with Mars Hill, Gardner Webb, Elon, & UTC and a combined score of 183-48). He played like a freshman and not only turned the ball over twice in the Red Zone he made some very poor decisions running & throwing the ball. UNA's rushing yards from a week ago are a bit decieving. Their best gainers were flooding deep zones with receivers and letting their big, athletic QB run behind the coverage. I don't think that is a page in Wofford's playbook. However, ASU has to tackle better than they did a week ago. If the Apps get up on Wofford early, doesn't turn the ball over, and forces them to play uphill all day, the Ankle Biters will have a difficult day.

In regards to Apps Defense
The Secondary of Lynch, Love, Woazeh and Touchstone is very good. Throw in Howard in long yardage situations and you still have a top notch secondary

I've been happily surprised at our LB crew. Pierre Banks is awesome (watch the Michigan highlights), Jacque Roman has shown his stuff in the Middle and Cam Speer while not outstanding has the experience to hold up the other side

Anthony Williams has been a huge surprise in the trenches and Gary Tharrington is coming off a huge freshman season. Couple that with a strong rotation of Tony Robertson, Tim Washington, Finnerty and Bozzo and the line will be fine.

Somebody had to ask the "why even show up?" question. Somebody always does. I guess us App fans, what with all our obsessive trumpeting, leave no choice in the matter.

Wofford needs to show up because they've got heart, grit, pluck, moxie, determination, and maybe even (dare I say) "it." Besides that, they've got one of the better football programs in the SoCon, one that's more-than-capable of tripping up ASU.

I think most fans have given Wofford much respect coming into this game. No need for all the "why show up" wimpering.

First, the statement was made sarcastically, not wimpering. You may have great players at the skill positions, but the sarcasm unit needs work:)

Second, in re-reading this thread, it is interesting how APP fans use player names and key positions, while Wofford fans talk about what they need to do as a TEAM.

What the app fans have done is set this up that if they fail in any of those areas and wind up losing, then they have a ready-made excuse for losing rather than Wofford winning.

If we win or lose, it will be because the team rose to the occasion or failed as a team.

App st. is a superior team, I have no doubt about that. But superiority does not always win ballgames. I believe Wofford will play to the level of the competition, if we execute excellently on offense and contain on defense.

Regardless, we will be in for an interesting afternoon.

I think my shirt is coming out the dryer now, it's time to go to the game.:) :D

Trust me, I've been to some of the practices and my friend works on the staff, we have a very strong TEAM. Its the media after the Mich game that has selected their few stars to talk about. However Moore makes sure it stays a TEAM out on the field.

And the other parallel of this equation is Wofford fans being happy as long as they had a good showing saying they were "supposed" to lose if App wins the game. I think Jerry Moore said it best with his statement that App never goes into any game with the mindset that it is not going to win.xnodx

If Wofford can beat ASU, does that mean that they could beat Chuck Norris?

We can beat Appalachian, but Chuck Norris might be a stretch.

My dog, who happens to be a Terrier, says YES they can. I'm afraid I have to concur. At least something in my house is okay with the outcome.

Congrats to Wofford. When they announced the score at the night Lafayette-Princeton game, there was stunned silence. Lafayette Coach Frank Tavani's son is the star safety on Wofford. Damn why couldn't he stay in Easton!
