I see about ten games that could be realistic scalps, but I'll have to sit down and think about it more before I pick em. Then there are always an "out of blue" game, or two, that nobody is going to pick.

These games caught my eye in terms of a chance to be "interesting"...
Eastern Kentucky at Eastern Michigan
William & Mary at Charlotte
Maine at New Mexico
Elon at Vanderbilt
Mercer at Auburn (the SEC dumpster fire factor, the Gators barely escaped Samford in 2021)
Villanova at Army
Richmond at Virginia
Delaware at Navy
Nicholls at ULM
Eastern Kentucky at Bowling Green
Holy Cross at Buffalo
UT-Martin at Boise State - playing at Montana State will prepare UT-Martin for this game imo....
Southern Illinois at Northwestern (granted, this could be a "good" Wildcat team..you never know with them...they were terrible last year)
North Dakota State at Arizona - Bison have to be the favorites....
Missouri State at Arkansas - the Shocker of the season?!?! Petrino's "last laugh"? The Bears have a ton of talent...
Montana State at Oregon State
Stony Brook at UMass
Fordham at Ohio
Sacramento State at Colorado State
ETSU at Mississippi State - I could see it being competitive....

SLU will have a chance at ULL in the opener. They lost the bulk of their coaching staff, including head coach, and a number of good players to the portal. We'll be retooling a bit but have a lot of good players back and some good ones coming in, especially on defense. It'll be close.

Alabama loves their FCS cupcake the same week every year -- always right before the Iron Bowl.

Navy ventures outside the PL for it's FCS opponent for the first time in 7 or 8 years to face an old rival in Delaware.

Didn't realize Villanova was going up to West Point this year. I may try to go to that one if I'm free that Saturday.

First Nova-WP game since 1977. They didn't play each other that often after the early 1950s. Army played BC and Holy Cross nearly annually in the 1960's, 1970s and 1980s...I guess two Catholic schools (and some years 3 with Notre Dame) was deemed enough by Army then.

https://goarmywestpoint.com/sports/football/opponent-history/villanova-university/44

This game was scheduled when Tennessee embarrassingly dropped Army from the schedule.

More like wishful thinking. Much like Yale ducking UGA for 2029 :(

But, I would like to see Holy Cross face another private secular non-Catholic college or university like Baylor... there are no more Catholic universities in California playing football besides the Toreros. xbawlingx

And once Murphy retires, McDermott and the new HC (future) should explore reviving the UMass Amherst-Harvard football rivalry, dormant since 1988. And also prolong the Harvard-Holy Cross football rivalry too.

Army has been fairly good the last couple years. Beat em and they won't ask you back. We played them three times from 91-94 and won twice and lost one by a point. Took 26 years for us to get asked back to play them again. LOL.

That is some creative stuff right there! xlolx I bet Alabama wishes it could have faced SHSU and other FCS teams in their natty games....xlolx Or NDSU face Georgia, Clemson etc.. NDSU will beat Arizona no doubt about it.

I know this is a homer thing but SDSU-Iowa will be interesting as well. Iowa is Big Ten runner ups and should be favored by a decent margin, but SDSU will certainly have plenty of talent returning. Also the last time Iowa was in the Big Ten title game, they went on to lose their FCS game the next season against NDSU. Hopefully history repeats itself.

I don't think you'll see HC schedule a P5 school unless it's against an historic rival like BC, Syracuse or Rutgers. Penn St. would be fun but I hear Chesney is very cautious about which FBS school to schedule. I believe HC is something like 0-15 against the Nittany Lions....last meeting between these two fine institutions was in 1964...HoF Coach Eddie Anderson's final year at HC.

Montana State and Oregon State is actually a neutral site game, being played in Portland and not Corvallis.

I can see a possible scenario where the Rubber Duckies go into Atlanta and beat Georgia, then the next week lay an egg the following week against EWU. That would be too funny.xlolx

In the past, I would say McNeese had a good chance. But with all the coaching staff changes in the last few years, I don't have a clue what kind of team we will have. If Montana St doesn't complete destroy us, I might be a little more optimistic.

Right now, it is going to be wait and see. Might have to give the new coach a few years before making any judgements.

As an APSU fan I’m cautiously optimistic about the WKU game. WKU loses a fair bit from what I’ve been told and we return a fair bit. Can’t say the same thing for the Bama game though. That’s going to be a riot from kickoff.

ETSU at Mississippi State - I could see it being competitive....

I sure hope so too. Given what happened at Vandyland a year ago and ETSU bringing a boatload of players back, I like our chances.

Side note: When the CWS was winding down, I had a couple of upset NC State baseball fans over how their team was treated. I asked them if they are willing to buy tickets to the Mississippi State bandwagon for I knew someone I used to go to church with who is a huge MSU fan. The rest was history.

We do hope that UTC will have the edge in both men's basketball AND football against the Illini after that game... xcoffeex

2-1 lifetime in March Madness (the latest meeting stung me) and first meeting in football (UTC doesn't list lifetime opponents in its football media guide hence I had to go to Illinois' website just to confirm this)...

NAU and the Sun Devils, OTOH, have a slightly dominant history in favor of the latter. NAU may keep it close but I don't think the Sun Devils lost a lot ... xdontknowx

Same goes for (scalp chance in parentheses):
Mercer at Auburn (40-60) - was the Sun Devils' offseason worse football-wise than Auburn?
ETSU at Mississippi State (50-50)
Villanova at Army (33-67 minimum but 'Nova has a real chance at a scalp)
Fordham at Ohio U (20-80)
Holy Cross at Buffalo (40-60 minimum but can be higher for the Fitton Crusaders)
W&M at Charlotte (33-67)
NDSU at Arizona (60-40)
Missouri State at Arkansas (50-50)
Stony Brook at UMass (33-67 but scalp is a reach for the Seawolves)
Sac at Colorado State (45-55 but scalp can be realistic for the Hornets)

I think those odds are generally fair. Auburn is a complete train wreck right now. When a SEC program goes off the rails it's usually REALLY ugly so I think Mercer can be a key contributor to the mess on the Plains.

I'm having a tough time getting a read on Arkansas. Some believe the 'Hogs will once against be a tough out in the SEC West. I tend to think they'll be struggle to finish above .500 which makes them a candidate to lose to what should be an absolutely loaded Missouri State team.

Mississippi State also seems ripe for an upset given their slip in recent years and ETSU figuring to be a legit Top 10, maybe Top 5 FCS team.

How awesome would it be if the SEC lost 3 games to FCS programs? Highly unlikely but yet not impossible imo.

Furman beat (then future, 1991-Present) SEC Team, South Carolina, in 1982 & (former, 1933-1963) SEC Team Georgia Tech in 1983.

Does that count?

How ‘bout if FUBeAR played for FU in the former & Coached for FU in the latter? Overcoming those handicaps made winning these games quite an accomplishment…so it should ‘count the same’ as 2 back-to-back SEC wins might.

FWIW, FU beat ACC Teams in the next 2 years (‘84 & ‘85)

Furman beat (then future, 1991-Present) SEC Team, South Carolina, in 1982 & (former, 1933-1963) SEC Team Georgia Tech in 1983.

Does that count?

How ‘bout if FUBeAR played for FU in the former & Coached for FU in the latter? Overcoming those handicaps made winning these games quite an accomplishment…so it should ‘count the same’ as 2 back-to-back SEC wins might.

FWIW, FU beat ACC Teams in the next 2 years (‘84 & ‘85)

Needs an asterisk. 1982 was Furman's and the SOCON's first year after dropping down to 1AA. So there was a lot of residual strength although I don't know what the previous scholarship situation was.

ETSU not only beat but thumped Vanderbilt last year. Would they be the first FCS team to beat SEC schools 2 years in a row?

I'll call FUBears victories over decade distant, previous and future SEC teams and raise The Citadel's win over South Carolina in 1990 (Ind, but SEC in 91) and a victory over Arkansas in 1992. Not in consecutive years but not bad, two wins in three years.

LOL - we had 55 scholarships at FU in those days. Most of our opponents had 95. I don’t think FU got to 63 scholarships until the Coach Johnson (Natl Champ game vs. Montana) years.

Is “residual strength” as impactful as “southern speed?” If so…we had both! :)

Alabama A&M also had over 30 transfers enter into their program, mostly from FBS teams. UAB better not take the Bulldogs lightly.

Maybe. Most likely most of these "FBS" players were not playing much, or at all. Which means they probably were not very good to begin with. At least not "starter" good. That's a general statement overall. There may be one or two exceptions. Usually the FBS castoffs aren't better than, or at best on par with, the standard FCS two deep. Depends on the FCS and FBS programs in question obviously.

Yeah, I remember when USD played Air Force. The academies are different FBS schools to play because they stay focused and don't overlook teams because they carry an FCS label. These are military guys, it's not in their nature to overlook an opponent.

Sure, well conditioned teams might be affected less, but it definitely has an insidious impact as the game wears on.

It was unquestionably dumb, especially given the situation.

Not willing to project a scalp, but UConn was 1-1 vs. FCS teams last year and haven't beaten a FCS team by more than 7-points since 2011 (vs. Fordham). With a new coach (Jim Mora), the Huskies showed they are not totally inept in their week 0 loss at Utah State.

Central takes a shot bus ride (less than 10 miles) face UConn for the first time as a FBS team. The Blue Devils are about a 19-point underdog, but UConn is starting a Frosh QB and has a depleted WR corps due to injuries.

With fellow "peers" Saint Francis and Bryant showing out very well last night, I moved this game from a guarantee ($275K) loss to a fairly competitive game.

Yeah well that’s easy for us to say while watching the game in their laz z boys

Watching on TV, you could tell that the receiver was in a very vulnerable position and it surely looked stupid for the defender to lay a hit like that... I get it and I knew he was gonna get the targeting call

But this is potentially the last play of the game and that Bryant defender was fired up and the way the play developed probably looked a lot different to him on the field

it looked like he realized it and tried to turn his head away and actually hit him with the back of his shoulder pads, but it was too late

I just know something will happen and CCSU won't win - but without a doubt Central.is as good or better team right now.

Central has forced UConn to change QBs, adjust game plan, and they are unable to impose their will. For the first time ever, in any sport we've played them - UConn has to adjust to CCSU, not the other way around. That in itself is amazing to watch.

Frost’s buyout drops significantly sometime in October, so they’ll keep him until that happens. But losing this would guarantee he gets fired at that point. Unless Nebraska decides to eat the couple million extra and fire him now to prove a point or something.

EDIT: Commented right as they scored.

Losing to Northwestern and North Dakota to start the year given where the program is at would require significant "value assessment". Simply ponying up and ridding themselves of the "Frost Stigma" ASAP might be worth the added cost of an immediate separation. At this point the longer it would drag out the uglier it will get. Especially with Oklahoma coming up for the first time in years....

I'll say watch Montana State/Oregon State. Beavers may be looking at the Bobcats as a lower division foe standing their way of a 3-0 start. If they go in the game thinking that, the Bobcats have the team to upset them. Also the game is not on campus in Corvallis but is being played in Portland so maybe less of a home field advantage?

FWIW...I will be there at the game. xlolx

Montana State vs Oregon State is a really interesting game. The Beavers came into the season with some sneaky hype from the "in the knows" and to this point seem pretty good. Montana State clearly looks to be one of the true elites in FCS.

I had no idea Reser Stadium was undergoing such a significant renovation until I was watching the Beaver vs Boise State game last week. Couldn't they have done it in a more reasonable manner? It doesn't seem to be as "transforming" as what UW or even USC did to their digs.

NDSU is showing as 42.8% chance in ESPN's matchup predictor. Gotta be the best chance for an FBS win (and the final straw that makes P5 teams stop scheduling the Bison going forward??)
I think Nova could come home with a W, but will take a pretty solid performance.
If we're still counting UMASS as FBS, the Seawolves beating them wouldn't surprise me at all.
Is Tenn State better than I give them credit for? I knocked EWU for getting all they could handle from the Tigers, scoring the go ahead TD with less than 3, but they also held their own against another top-15. Could they sneak up on Mid-Tennessee?
Montana State has very little chance against Oregon State. They are just outside the top 25. Would be sweet, but not happening.

This UIW team is a really fun team to watch. Tons of playmakers on both sides of the ball. The offense started off the Nevada game with 2 turnovers on their first 3 plays. Gave Nevada a short field to work with twice and they got 10 points off those UIW turnovers. UIW was able to turn it around and not let the slow start derail them. It'll be exciting to see what all they can accomplish this season.

I have Stony Brook winning by multiple scores. Even though they're probably a mid-tier CAA team, I think UMASS is that bad, again.

Massey has UMass at 206 out of 261 Div I teams. That would be #76 in FCS. Pretty bad for an FBS team. Bowling Green next lowest at 185 or would be #56 in FCS.

I like that link except a lot of what is prior to about 84 or 85 is sort of jacked here and there. A lot of conferences were transitioning from IA to IAA so it may look weird to some. Like it has James Madison IAA beating ETSU IA. That part is good since the SOCON was still IA in 81. Or it has Delaware IAA beating W&M IA in 83. Again, good because W&M was still IA. However, it also has Wofford IAA beating ETSU in 1980. Only problem is Wofford wasn't IAA in 80. Not even in the NCAA then, but the NAIA until 87. Then Div II until 94. There are few other errors, Like PC listed as NCAA IAA in 79, but they were also NAIA until 93, and then Div II until 2010. It also lists S Illinois as IA in 85, but they were already IAA in 83. Or they better have been since they were the IAA champions in 83. I'm sure others could find more errors. I didn't see any after about 85.

Anything before 1985 or 86 probably should be treated differently.

For sure. Penn losing to Lehigh or Lafayette in the early 80's shouldn't be viewed as a "scalp" for example. Or BU, UMass or UConn beating Holy Cross between 1978 and 1983, if that took place. I didn't take time to read all the ones down that far.

WIU has 7-8 real ones.

We're listed 12 times, but it includes wins over Illinois State in '78, '80, and '82, as well as Southern Illinois in '85. Then there was the 2017 52-10 win over Coastal Carolina that was moving up to FBS...if I remember correctly, they weren't fully there yet scholarship-wise, but were to the point where they couldn't compete as a FCS team and were competing as members of the Sun Belt at that point. So, that one is kinda "iffy" in terms of them being a full FBS at the time.

The 5 years I was in the marching band at WIU were some pretty good years: NIU in '96, NIU in '99, Ball State in '00.

In 2003, our 22-point win over Eastern Michigan was followed up by a trip to play Nick Saban's LSU team (that won the BCS national championship that year) where we were only down by 1 score until about 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter (they blew things open late in the 3rd and won by 28). Still, competed about as well against them as South Carolina and Auburn, and a lot better than Arizona or Mississippi State did.

No such thing as a moral victory; a morale and/or confidence-building loss is possible though.

For example, after seeing Furman take the fight to and often outplay Clemson’s Starters, FUBeAR has much more confidence that that Furman will contend for the SoCon Championship, is definitely a Playoff-quality Team, and certainly should be ranked in the Top 20….ergo, a confidence-building loss.

Portland State has 4 since 2000. I guess those could be considered real.

2000 Hawaii 45-20
2006 New Mexico 17-6
2015 Washington State 24-17
2015 North Texas 66-7

Our win over North Texas is considered to be the largest margin of victory for FCS over FBS. In 2006, New Mexico actually went to a bowl. That year, our losses were to Cal (with Marshawn Lynch) who went bowling, Oregon who also went bowling, and at Montana and Montana State, and we were left out of the FCS playoffs.

That's a bit of a travesty. 1-2 vs FBS, 6-2 vs FCS, only losses to top 10 (per Sporting News poll). However, to play Devil's advocate, the field was only 16 back then. Sporting News had them at 19. It also had Northern Iowa, who was also 7-4, at 17 and they also didn't make the cut (they were Gateway back then, so they didn't get the same liberties as a 6-5 MVFC team now gets xsmiley_wix). Wofford (#23) also finished 7-4 and was left out. The Southland Champ McNeese was 7-5 and ranked #21 and Lafayette was unranked as PL Champ and moved the at-large line up 2 spots. But NDSU (#5) and Cal Poly (#16) were ineligible, moving the line back to #16 making UNI the first team out (using the Sporting News ratings). #18 was Princeton (no playoffs) so PSU would have been the 2nd team left out. #20 was PFL Champ San Diego, but we didn't let them participate back then...

Congrats SIU! I always pull for Northwestern given their focus on the student-athlete but this is a huge win for Southern Illinois given its ability to really generate interest in the program!

The Salukis represented the FCS' lone scalp of an FBS this week.

Next week, will there be any more perhaps?

Uh bonarae, would you not count NDSU over Arizona if it happened? I know NDSU was favored an all...

The Bison still have a shot. Up 21-17 in the third.

Bison up 28-24 at the end of the third. Barring a turnover, it feels like whoever scores last will win.

Arizona wins, thus sealing SIU as the only FCS who scalped an FBS in week 3.

Moving forward, I think Chattanooga may give the Illini a scare.

Sac State @ Colorado State looks like a good chance for a scalp next week too.

Ohio ain't exactly great. Fordham might threaten. Their D is not very good, but their O produces.
