Long time, first time! I have been waiting years for the next NCAA video game, and while I wait, I've decided to come up with my own rating scale for when I finally have the opportunity to import my favorite FCS teams again. Originally, I was just going to focus on the Patriot League, but decided it would be fun to do the entire FCS. Just like in Madden, the ratings are definitely not gospel. I always felt those rating are based partially off talent, with an emphasis on a player's reputation. Some players maintain undeservingly high ratings for much too long, while others are insultingly low until they “prove” themselves. The same will apply here, but using a uniform system, based on factors that can be applied to every player, makes me feel pretty good about it’s objectivity. Once the game (finally) comes out, these ratings could become useless, but until then feel free to enjoy! At the very least, putting this together is allowing me to have a pretty good idea of where each FCS team stands going into the 2022 season--maybe it will for you too! Lastly, the scale I’m using can be applied to FCS and FBS teams, so if a player is rated in the 90’s I believe they are an “FBS caliber player”. In fact, here’s how the ratings would look (generally):
90's - the best players on: P5 Teams
80's - the best players on: Group of 5 Teams
70's - the best players on: Upper FCS Teams
60's - the best players on: lower FCS Teams
50's - Majority Bench Players (both subdivisions)
A few more details:
No film watching--points based on accolades first, playing time, and class
ex: All American garners more points than 1st, 2nd, 3rd, HM All League, which garner more points than starters, backups, depth players. Players get bonus points for every year of eligibility they’ve exhausted, so (just like in real life) teams that redshirt have a slight advantage.
Players recieve points based on "in season accolades" (player of the week)
Strength of schedule determines scoring "scale"
ex: All Conference MVFC garners more points than All Conference Pioneer League. Earning All American status in MVFC garners more points than doing so in the PFL.
Players also earn bonuses based on team's final Sagarin Rating
ex: Kennesaw state may have a weak SOS, but finish high according to Sagarin rating. These players deserve a bump in "scale"
For Offensive Lines, the rating was based on three factors: total offense generated last year (entire group) tackles for a loss allowed (entire group), amount of playing time/starts--or their ‘contribution’ (each specific linemen). Of course, specific linemen can receive postseason (or sometimes in-season) awards that boost their individual rating as well.
Final Notes:
I’m only illustrating the “starting 11” for each team, so if you’re curious what rating a backup has--let me know!
I’m trying my best to keep up with transfers and seniors returning. If I missed one--let me know!
Putting these together takes forever, and I only knock them out during my free time--so far I’ve completed the Patriot, NEC, Ivy and CAA. I also have at least the top players in every conference graded out. I’ll post a conference at a time once I’ve completed them. Open to any feedback/debate!
