Why do Division I-AA, Division II, and Division III Champions always listed their championship by division (ie Division I-AA National Champions) but I-A list theirselves as National Champion?

Why does a dog lick its balls?

BECAUSE IT CAN.

Not to argue your point, Cocky, but you know that nifty National Championship banner that hangs at the Pete from 1985? It doesn't say D-II anywhere on it.

We really outta have something like that at Paul Snow.

I agree, but why can't JMU do the same (and all other NCs)?

The Div IAA, Div II, and Div III NC are awarded by the NCAA. They are seperated because the NCAA wants to recognize each one as the champ in their division.

The NCAA does not award a Div IA NC, that is awarded by the BCS, or in essence by just that group of schools awarding the title to themselves.

It would be like you and your significant other proclaiming you the NC in lovemaking and giving you the "Cocky" award. Who's to stop you? :D

And for some years there are multiple teams that claim a title in I-A (or prior to that Division I). For example 5 teams were declared Division I national champs in Division I in 1964.

I'm glad JMU has presented their sign as the NC.

My completely non-binding opinion is that if you won a national title in the classification you currently belong to, no classification designation is needed. Titles won in other classifications should be designated by the classification.
