David Ortiz is back! Ortiz hit a 2-run walk-off homer to beat the Devil Rays 5-4, it was Ortiz's second of the game and 31st of the season.
The Red Sox lowered their magic number to 12 for clinching the division and to 7 for clinching a playoff spot.

The Sox had me worried last night when they were down 8 - 1 in the fifth. The Yankees are on fire and the Sox can't afford to lose two at home to the D-Rays. Nice comeback win last night and tonight. Should be a good series this weekend.

Travis, it doesn't matter anyways. The D-Backs are living the charmed life, and have been preordained 2007 World Series Champions. xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx
How else can you explain the second youngest team in the majors with the second best record, and a 3 1/2 game lead with 15 to play? They are a virtual LOCK to make the playoffs (if they play .500, the next best team would have to go 14-1 to pass them for the wildcard), and with Webb, Davis & Hernandez on the bump and Byrnsie, CY, Upton, Drew & Reynolds leading the charge, we're gonna ride that train all the way to the championship!

ALWAYS STAND ON THE UNION SIDE
By M.C. Bisbee
Always stand on the Union side,
And battle for the right.
With conscience clear, we'll laugh at fear
In the midst of the boldest fight.
Why turn against our native land,
The mother whom we love?
Who ever rules with gentle hand,
Till children recreant prove?
CHORUS:
Always stand on the Union side,
And battle for the right.
With conscience clear, we'll laugh at fear
In the midst of the boldest fight.
Always stand on the Union side,
And "keep your powder dry."
We'll soon rejoice both far and wide
To see secession die.
'Tis better in defense of truth,
To be both brave and bold,
Than side with traitors and at last
Be left out in the cold.
CHORUS
Always stand on the Union side,
'Tis better, as you see,
Heav'n will crown our gallant arms,
With Union victory!
If you would have your children learn,
To speak with holy pride,
Of this their dear beloved land!
Stand on the Union side!

Yea, because the Red Sox have done so well against the Yankees this year.xrolleyesx

Let's keep things honest here - isn't the season series 8-7 in favor of the Yankees right now, and only 2 of those 7 wins for the Red Sox came against Wright and Karstens. The other wins came against Wang (once), Pettite (twice), and Mussina (twice). It's not like the Yankees threw Karstens up there every game to the Red Sox.

It's 8-7 in favor of the Yanks but it had been 5-1 in favor of the Red Sox. Since the Yankees' run of early-season injuries has come to an end, the Yanks have gone 7-2 against the Sox.
In the games the Sox roughed up Wang and Pettitte, both were recently coming off the disabled list. Wang especially had a number of poor outings earlier in the season before finding his groove. He's now 18-6, and his 3.69 ERA would be in the low 3.00s if you threw out his first five starts this year.
The Sox were fortunate to face the Yankees so many times early in the season when several Yankees -- pitchers and every day players -- were DLed or just getting off the DL.
The Yanks have feasted on Boston pitching this year. Dice-K, Beckett and Schilling may be good enough to beat up on TB and KC, but their numbers against the Yankees this year are pretty bad.
So the Yanks get in as a wildcard this year. If that happens, at least the wildcard would go this year to a team that could make a case for being the best in its division but for early season setbacks and injuries rather than to a team that had no case for being the best at any time during the season, such as the Red Sox in many prior seasons. :p

You have got to be kidding - that's the biggest load of rationalization I've ever heard. Wang's ERA would be in the low 3's if not for those bad starts? How many other pitchers would also have their ERA's lowered if they could just kid rid of their bad starts??? Everybody is a great pitcher if you only look at their good starts. Crazy. As far as I know baseball has no mulligans.
And although tonight's game isn't over yet (6-2 Sox in the 6th) they got to Pettite again with 9 hits, 2 walks, and 4 earned runs through just 4 innings. That's 3 times now the Sox have beat Pettite (assuming lead holds up) - when do the Sox get credit for beating Pettite, or are you throwing out those 3 games because they are part of Andy's "bad" games?
When all is said and done, the Sox are going to win the East relatively easily, probably finishing 5-7 games ahead of the Yankees - rationalize it anyway you want (and as memory serves the Red Sox had a guy or two on the injured list this year as well) the Sox have been better. The Yanks weren't just hurt by injuries - they were hurt by an inability to beat the teams in their own division (many games that happened well after the injuries) - being under .500 against the AL East has been their undoing (well, that and an average at best bullpen)
Oh, and do I sense now that you've reversed yourself on your feeling about the Wild Card - maybe that's the reason for the extreme rationalization? Pontificating about how the Wild Card is an abomination and a cheapening of the World Series, that is, until the Yankees win the Wild Card. So I take it you'll be happy if they win the World Series this year and not regret that they didn't "win it all"? xlolx

The fact is that the Yankees have been the best team in the bigs since May 28, when their rash of early season injuries subsided. That makes them a very dangerous post-season team.

Aside from Wang their pitching still sucks and they can't expect to win shootouts in the playoffs everyday.
The Yankees are not a dangerous post-season team expecially when they will have to face the Angels in the first round, whom there 3-6 against this season.

If New York holds on to beat Baltimore, the lead will be cut to 3 1/2 in the East.
Plus remember, New York would win the tie breaker if both teams finish with the same record.

you can watch most baseball games here....http://livefooty.doctor-serv.com/American_Sports.html mostly its the MLBTV feed of the games, though someone feeds the NESN broadcasts of Sox games.. you need to install sopcast at sopcast.com and the games vary on channels though Yankees are generally on channel 8 or 9.
For NFL games out of market you can go here to view the games http://streamednfl.blogspot.com/ again you need sopcast for these as well.... I havent tried the NFL yet but if the quality is as good as the baseball ones its prety decent...
As of right now the only game not covered with a video stream this weekend is the Baltimore vs Arizona game.
That means 15 games and 30 teams will be availale online :)

Also If you go to sopcast you can sign up to provide streams.... for those who have tv tuners on their computer and have access to FCS teams games every week from local channels you can stream the game for others to watch... a lot of FBS teams are available this way... though tracking down links was tougher then I thought it was gonna be.

Odd when winning the East seemed to be the way to avoid the Angels and now the Wild Card may have the better fortune of missing the Angels. Just crazy.

Far be it from me to ruin Yankee fans' schadenfreude, but some of the Boston fans here need to get a grip still. 2.5 may not seem like much, but there's only 11-12 games left. A 5-6 record for Boston would have to be matched by the Yankees going 8-4.
After they finish with Baltimore, the Yanks get Toronto for 4, facing Halladay, Burnett, McGowan and Marcum, all of whom have pitched well this season, including against NY. They also close at Tampa, probably seeing Kazmir and Sonnanstine (who despite his season line of 6-9 5.68 is 1-1 3.14 vs. the Yankees, including an 8 inning, 1 unearned run performance Aug. 31).
Boston, on the other hand, gets 3 at Tampa, who they own, then 7 games at FENWAY, where they'll face Oakland and Minnesota. If I'm remembering the rotations correctly, they'll face the A's and Twins while missing Dan Haren and Johan Santana.
As much as I enjoy the panic in the streets in New England, everyone needs to take a deep breath and just focus on one game at a time....

Ya and Boston is at the point where there resting SP's to line up the rotation. Matsuzaka was to pitch today but now sits til Saturday and Schilling sits until Sunday while Clay Buchholz gets a start tonite. The sox will have Beckett, Matsuzaka and Schilling in that order for the playoffs.
I would be surprised if with a greta game tonite Buchholz takes Gagne's spot on the playoff roster. Ellsbury will liklely take the 4th OF spot from Kielty unless Manny is still on vacation.

The Red Sox magic number for making the playoffs is 3. They could probably go winless and still get in. I wouldn't panic if I were them, and I wouldn't rush Manny back.

The Yankees are set for a 6 man rotation the rest of the way, with Wang being the only guy Torre is set on keeping on schedule.

To me, and most Red Sox fans, it does.
Not only have we blown a double digit lead, but it's been 12 long years since we won the Division. Not to mention we're trying to secure home field advantage, which we've squandered as well.
I'll say it again....this is bad.

Home field advantage is important, but it can be won without it.... More then anything I want the division so when we do win the Series Joe can stop saying we didnt win it all :p
Also im not sure I can live through the Yankee guys on here bragging about passing Boston.

Now, would we do that to a group of guys who were so quiet and compassionate when the Yankees dropped four in a row in the 2004 ALCS?xwhistlex

It's funny how the last couple weeks I've been cheering for Detroit, wanting to see them overtake New York in the Wild Card race.
Now I find myself wanting to see them lose so we have the Wild Card to fall back on. xoopsx
BTW, have I mentioned yet how much I dislike Eric Gagne?

If NY passes Boston in the east, theres virtually no chance Detroit passes Boston unless Boston doesnt win again... our magic number for a playoff spot (aka wild card fall back) is 3 That will be taken care of this weekend in Tampa with Beckett, Schilling and Matsuzaka pitching.

Isn't Wakefield pitching in the upcoming TB series?
I know he's been struggling, but he owns the Rays at the Trop.

The pitching matchups for the Boston/Tampa Bay series....
Friday - J. Beckett vs. S. Kazmir
Saturday - D. Matsuzaka vs. A. Sonnanstine
Sunday - T. Wakefield vs. E. Jackson
On paper, we should sweep this series, but given how bad we've been playing (can we get some timely hitting, please?!?!?) nothing is a given.
Thank god we're done with Toronto. They've been a pain in the ass since day 1.

Where at the point that I wouldnt be surprised if Manny is DH this weekend and Ortiz is at first base in place of Youkilis. If Youk's wrist is better he can play LF like he did last season... We need Manny's bat back into the lineup.

For Boston, the answer is "Not soon enough"

No biggie. It will be gone by the middle of the week.
Do you think that home plate ump wanted to go home?xrolleyesx

Mid week? Two more in Tampa then 2 with Oakland takes the Sox to midweek..... Boston easily could win each of the games and could possibly even have the division clinched then too.

Boston has 8 games left (2 @ Tampa, 2 Oakland, 4 Minnesota) New York has 9 games left (3 Toronto, 3 @ Tampa, 3 @ Baltimore) New York Needs to win 3 more games then Boston over that stretch to tie them and take the tie breker for the division win.
Boston vs Tampa 12-4, at Tampa 5-2
Boston vs Oakland 2-4, at Boston 1-1
Boston vs Minnesota 2-1, at Boston 0-0
Yankees vs Toronto 8-7, at New York 3-3
Yankees vs Tampa 8-7, at Tampa 3-3
Yankees vs Baltimore 7-8, at Baltimore 2-4
Do you really think New York is gonna win 3 more games then Boston over the final 9 days?
