View Full Version : Eli Manning, the NFL's answer to Pat Burrell?

Morelli reminds me of Eli Manning. He has all the physical skills but always looks uncomfortable in the huddle.

This quote from Franks Tanks in another thread, coupled with a suggestion from cleets to start a new thread has inspired me!

Not if you watched the game Sunday night

Of course, he could be out for awhile, which means the G-Men are screwed :(

Eli actually did look good on Sunday, but I still think he may cry at times, like when he throws an int. As the Sports guy calls it the "eli manning face." Eli and Pat are the same in that they dont live up to there immense potential. There are differences however, Eli seems to really care about being good but lacks confidence and swagger. Burrell on the other hand has the confidence and swagger, but seems to come up short due to total apathy. He is more interested in finding a woman after the game than playing in it.

My opinion of Burrell is changing.
He has never lashed out at Philly fans, even though he has been booed quite a bit the last few years.
The Phillies tried to trade him but Burrell would not waive his no trade clause - he wants to play in Philly and I respect that.
He apparently works very hard but is somewhat aloof. Sort of like how Mike Schmidt was. Obviously Schmidt has better numbers, but he used to get booed because the fans didn't think he cared.
I'm beginning to think that Burrell has more mental toughness than I had earlier thought. I'm not putting him in the Hall of Fame, but I wouldn't mind seeing him in left field next year either.

He had plenty of confidence that game. Swagger's just not his style, but he was cool, calm and in control of the offense the whole night. Now if only he could play safety.... xbangx

You gotta be a Giants fan

I don't really see the analogy here. Burrell's stock has gone up in the second half. He just needs to put two good halves together. Manning's still a kid, with the pluses and minuses that youth brings.xtwocentsx

I'm glad Manning is in NY with Coughlin. Under Coughlin he'll never develop enough to bme a top-tier QB. :)

Am I that obviously a glutton for punishment xrotatehx

To be fair, defending Eli puts me solidly in only 50% of the Giants fan camp. Eli's development and/or "bust" status has been a hot topic since he was drafted, but some of his detractors are the ones really shaking now, with the idea of Lorenzen under center for a period of time.

What do you mean you can't see the analogy? Pat Burrell has the skills, but lacks the discipline. Until 6 weeks ago, watching him bat was a painful experience for any student of baseball. Same goes for Manning.

I don't know...I've never seen Manning bat!:p

But I've watched him QB... it makes you roll your eyes in disgust, much like watching Fat Squirrel, er, I mean Pat Burrell.

Maybe I'm part of the silent majority, but I always thought Eli's "talent" was overblown. If it wasn't for his lineage would he have even been a 1st round pick?? Still waiting from his days at Ole Miss to present to be impressed....

Agreed. IMO he wouldn't have even been looked at by Ole Miss, let alone any of the Big 6 conferences, if it wasn't for his lineage. He ain't nothing like his dad, and he'll never even compare to Payton.

What do you mean? He's exactly like his dad: Overrated. Archie was mediocre at best. Often, Archie "brought the suck."
Peyton is the only good Manning.

Here's what I mean:

On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best)

Payton - 10

Archie - 6

Eli - 4, occasionally a 5

he's still a young guy, besides who else could the giants get that could do better?
