I didn't see a unified thread on this... xcoffeex

Cornell lost a WR (Curtis Raymond III) to TCU and an OL (Hunter Nourzad) is still making his decision.

Harvard's Aaron Shampklin is most likely headed to the PAC-12 as a graduate transfer but I can't find his name in the 247Sports portal list (https://247sports.com/Season/2022-Football/TransferPortal/).

SHU's J.D. DiRenzo and JMU's Antwane Wells are in the said list though.

Post other former players of your team in the portal or have transferred to other schools (FBS, fellow FCS or lower divisions) that I've never cared to Google and help us all.

I would be interested in a one stop shop to see who has entered the portal and if the student/athlete did sign with a team. HERO/Sam Herder has started a list of who has signed https://herosports.com/2022-fcs-to-fbs-transfers-bzbz/ https://herosports.com/2022-fcs-to-fcs-transfers-bzbz/ but these lists are only have the players who have signed with a new team, not who has entered their name in the portal.

Jared Verse from Albany is in the transfer portal. He’s received a ton of interest, including receiving an offer from the University of Texas.

You don’t even need to sign up, just hit refresh often

Its really to much information though with thousands in the portal

The biggest name was Jared Verse, who was ranked the #2 defensive player and #8 overall transfer in the portal. It was a game of "what Power 5 school didn't offer him". He just signed with FSU, a great landing spot to continue to grow at the DE position. Albany wouldn't have kept him unless we won a Natty. Kid was severely underrecruited. Wishing him the best.

I heard he was a late bloomer. He ended up receiving an offer from Texas, but it was too late for the home state Longhorns.

All accurate. Most schools wanted him as a TE. Albany wanted him as a DE. Went from 6'4 215 or so to 6'4 and 247. Credited our position coach, Bill Nessalt, with his growth. Has a lot more to learn...but should be really good. He said he had a final five, my guess was FSU, Tennesse, Miami, Texas...and who knows on the fifth.

I would be surprised too, based on what I was told during the season, but wouldn't shock me if he chooses any of them to be honest. Houston is close to home and runs an offense from a similar tree — he would absolutely kill it at Ole Miss and would play in the SEC, plus Oxford is a helluva college town and environment. Or, he could have a personal desire to play at an HBCU. And I suppose he could show some loyalty to UIW. Regardless, he's a fantastic player and young man.

This question might be worthy of its own thread, but what is the motivation for these players to enter the portal for a lateral FCS to FCS transfer? I get the move to enter the portal if they think they have a good shot at a FBS school, or if there was a recent coaching change. If it's for more playing time, what makes them think they will get it at another FCS school? Maybe I am missing something, but the portal seams like a risky game of musical chairs for some players.

We've had a couple players jump or are in the process. It's always hard to determine why they are leaving (the discipline, academics, or just wanting more playing time). A First All Conf Team LB and a promising young BBack who saw lots of successful action in the spring but not much this Fall. We have a bunch of good BBacks, but the LB hurts more.

One weird issue we have are beginning to have is since our coaches have done a good job encouraging players to ramp up pre college courses and summer academics, we have some players able to graduate in three years. Throw a red shirt year in and they could graduate and get their ring and still jump and have two years remaining while they get a masters. Eek. That could result in a really good player with NFL aspirations jumping to an FBS for more visibility. That has happened at least once. Although we have had super senior stay(6th year), with his bonus virus year, this past season while he worked on his second masters!

I heard or read somewhere that since the "portal" opened that just over 1000 student athletes have entered it but only 300+ have joined other schools. That means about 2/3rds have not returned to football. Yikes.

It's nice to see a guy like this come to UCA since we lost Tyler Hudson. Man I still can't believe he left. Wish him luck wherever he goes though.

What motivates anybody to do anything? Each individual has their reasons. Could be a coaching change— a change in academic major and may have better opportunity for growth outside of football somewhere else— buried on a depth chart but might fit better elsewhere—get closer to home, or just a simple change of scenery. There are all kinds of reasons why kids look for greener pastures. Not saying they always make the best decisions, but everybody has a reason.

With the desire to keep players on campus and in the weight room over summer, many players at many schools meet graduation requirements after three years. A lot of schools have created graduate programs for these athletes, the most popular of which is a masters in Sports Marketing. This can help retain athletes, but how many jobs are out there for a Masters in Sports Marketing? My concern about graduate transfers is about how many of these players actually achieve useful degrees and how many drop out after their last football game - not a likely issue with SoCon schools, but probably a bigger issue in FBS.

I can understand a player trying to move to the big time, or playing down to get playing time, but I wonder if many of these players do not have a realistic expectation of their desirability in the portal.

Washington is pretty good

He got his fair share of carries over his 3 seasons at UNH but was always somewhat in the shadow of another RB - Evan Gray his 1st two years and and Dylan Laube this past season. His stated reason for leaving? He said he wanted to play somewhere he'd have the majority of playing time at RB. SLU seemed to be have a pass heavy offense this past season, and I think QB Cole Kelly was also their leading rusher. Not sure Carlos made a good decision, I don't think he excelled as a blocking back. But I agree with your assessment - Carlos is pretty good. Good luck to him at SLU.

I think he made a great decision. From watching his tape, Washington fits perfectly for what we do offensively, and he'll get plenty of touches in the running game and passing game. Cole Kelley was our leading rusher, in part, because we haven't had a healthy No. 1 RB the last couple of years and had to piece things together with average Joes. Washington reminds me some of our RB in 2018 and 2019, Devonte Williams. Devonte had over 1,100 yards yards from scrimmage in 2019, rushing/receiving. I think this guy can give similar production if he stays healthy.

We got a qb and a rb outta the portal, but morgan has stated he wants freshmen to build the program. I like it in theory, but dont know if that will work in todays world. We had 81 freshmen on fall roster.

In my opinion, we had only 2 kids that would start elsewhere, and one transferred. Im guessing he’ll end up at Nichols or SLU, hes from Houma.

I just hope we can keep some lineman. A sophmore on the line would be nice.

The chances of building exclusively with freshmen, given the new transfer rules, are probably remote at best, unless it's an NDSU/SDSU/Montana situation where they have an advantage of flagship status and a near monopoly on local high school talent. I do think schools that are patient, will find value in leftover high school players, but between kids who bust and kids who develop quickly and seek to transfer, what are the odds of keeping a big class of freshmen around for four years? What are the odds of stacking two or three quality classes in a row? It was tough enough under the old rules, but should be even tougher now, unless you're one of the destination schools—there aren't many of those at the FCS level.

Theoretically, if distributed equally throughout Division I, it comes to roughly 11.5 per school. Add in another 1,300 to 1,400 Division II players, the market is obviously flooded. Excluding walk-ons who can't play dead, and those who've already found homes or have pulled themselves out, it's still a buyer's market for sure. Kids transfer for all kinds of reasons, and it's not always about trying to move up. But it's obvious from the numbers there will be guys who leave stable, scholarship situations, only to find themselves scrambling for scholarship offers elsewhere. And the trickle down effect to high school recruits is another issue entirely.

It may have been touched on before, but I don't think this glut of transfers will last. It's was a perfect storm with rule change, and virus roughly coinciding. That extra free year gave a lot of kids an extra incentive to leave earlier rather than later. Without it, I think there would be much less activity.

If I'm wrong and this will be standard practice each year college football will slowly but inevitably fade away. School fans, those that make up the bulk of donations and attendance, will drop away instead of funding a musical chair industry. I know I have little loyalty to any player who does a touch and go.

We had 3 guys enter the portal that I'm aware of (one was a grad transfer).

- Junior long snapper/slotback went to FBS Fresno State
- Sophomore DB who hadn't had any playing time went to a DII in West Virginia
- WR who we got when Florida Tech shut down their program a couple of years ago has entered as a grad transfer but I have not seen any offers or updates for him
The LS is the only one who had playing time for us.

The only transfers coming in so far are from JUCOs, but obviously there's still time and plenty of talent in the portal to possibly bring in a few other guys.

Yeah as I mentioned in the SOCON thread, I'm pretty sure he will be looking for, taken as, a running back, not a QB. I certainly hope we don't lose any more graduate players. To many getting their degree either on time or even early. But this might have been a Covid thing with getting an extra year, and it made it an appealing situation for him.

You have seen him run right? He is fast and finds holes. Who knows.

I still think he did not have two years left starting and he knew it. Who knows what he and the coach discussed. If I see a lot of change in our scheme, then we should know fairly certain. If it's same ole, same ole, then maybe not.

Dude I'm not saying he will do well and get snapped up quick, but he is a good athlete, so who knows. I thought he was ok, but I was never very excited about him at QB. Maybe it was the whole Covid thing, so maybe he is not getting a fair shake, but he never seemed to have that spark that Allen or Rainey had.

https://twitter.com/jasirupnext1/status/1496523787394863115

Jasir's older brother Jabril was also a standout at NDSU for 4 years before transferring to LSU for his 5th season and just completed his rookie season with the Dallas Cowboys. I'm guessing Jasir will also get P5 interest (maybe as a safety rather than an LB though given his size). He was a super versatile player for the Bison defense who quite often matched up with opposing slot receivers.

The NCAA just dropped two years worth of Transfer Portal data (https://www.ncaa.org/sports/2022/4/25/transfer-portal-data-division-i-student-athlete-transfer-trends.aspx). While the portal sometimes works out for kids, the data bears out what we all probably suspected and your grandma definitely told you growing up, "the grass isn't always greener on the other side". In fact, for a surprisingly high number of kids, there's no grass on the other side at all.

The NCAA's webpage allows you to see the data for particular sports and for FBS football, that data isn't pretty at all. For FCS transfers, however, that data is downright fubugly. Only 27% of FCS players going into the portal end up with a scholarship at any level on the other side. That's still 2.5x better than the results for FCS walk-ons (11%).

The transfer portal works both ways. Yes, there are some players that upgrade. Most players that enter the portal downgrade. The secret is that coaches are using the portal to process players out of the program that are not working out, buried on the depth chart, don't have the upside, or have younger players coming on overtaking them. Prior to the portal these players would just be processed out and you heard nothing about it other than you knew teams had turnover. Now these players enter the portal to try to get a second chance and we are all able to see the transactions and the data.

I mean, these schools signed 25-30 NLI's each year. Each year on senior day you see 8, 10, maybe 15 seniors on the very high end. What did you think happened to all those other players through the years?

That's interesting, but I think the idea of players deciding not to jump in because they can see the competition already in the portal during this window is kind of unrealistic. Especially with hundreds of schools looking, and for hundreds of schools for a player to look at. Maybe in one or two unique situations, and probably those few will be mostly the very top sliver of FBS to FBS, but not for the vast majority.

The move makes sense... the Bison QB room was getting kind of crowded and I was worried they'd lose redshirt freshman Cole Payton who, IMO, has the highest ceiling of any QB on the roster with both Patterson and Cam Miller blocking him. Entz was already on record as saying they were planning to play all 3 QBs so playing time was going to be limited for him at NDSU. The timing seems a bit strange, I wonder if he waited this long in order to grad transfer since he's already transferred as an undergrad once (from Virginia Tech to NDSU)???

He was undefeated as a starting QB at NDSU and a big part of a championship team so happy he chose NDSU and wish him the best wherever he ends up... his physical tools are star-caliber if he finds the right system to utilize those tools.

Totally agree that the QB room is crowded, if Cole Payton stays. I actually do hope that he can get to somewhere where he can succeed (no sarcasm was meant at all by my first statement). Is this evidence that CP15 is staying then? Will make for an interesting fall.

I think Cole Payton is in at least for this year. Someone on Bisonville mentioned that underclassmen have to enter the portal by 5/1 or go by the old rules (either transfer down to play right away or sit out a year). Patterson is likely a grad transfer so he can still transfer somewhere and play right away this fall at his new school.

30 Carries. 2.3 ypc. Not exactly a massive hit to the offense, or a major boon to UND

Hey thanks. I saw your post in another thread as well.

Have not been here in a while but was reading and saw your comment and this is spot on. We are just now seeing the attrition in tangible numbers because of the portal. Most players who enter the portal are transferring down or giving up on football. I have heard from coaches that P5 schools are using "flunked medical" as an excuse to push players out as well. Due to NIL these coaches don't have to feel bad since players can get paid. Nobody is holding them back from making money.

I do get why coaches want to just push players out and don't have hesitation now because of NIL money so they aren't amateurs and don't have to feel so bad but it is hard for many. The common theme from coaches these days are that something has to be done about all this because it is an absolute mess.

I missed this one. Portland State got Princeton's former punter George Triplett back on April 30.

Here is his bio from Princeton. He will be a grad transfer for the Vikings with one season eligibility. He is currently listed on Portland State's 2022 roster.

Nothing screams "Committed" like leaving a school after a season. :D

Are you talking about Jordon Thomas? He didn’t play last fall for Texas. In fact, he wasn’t even on campus. I believe his father died before the season began (I know his father died last year, but I’m not sure when it happened) and he was highly unlikely to even see the field for the Longhorns.

I'm talking about the general concept and the flood of twitter images of "committed" athletes.
