View Full Version : Travis Hunter

He's one of the nation's top recruits, and has been committed for some time to Florida State. It appears he has flipped to Jackson State, whose head coach is none other than Florida State legend Deion Sanders. That doesn't happen every day. This kid is a five-star recruit and could have gone anywhere in the country.

A five star is no guarantee. Anyone remember Makur Maker, the five star basketball recruit from 2020 that signed with Howard?

Played two games, got hurt, left school. Playing now in Australia.

You’re thinking small. JSU (and, perhaps, other HBCU’s) will begin petitioning very soon to have equitable access to and be included in the CFP.

FUBeAR believes they will win that argument in some form or fashion.

Or, it would seem silly to. The SWAC's formula is working well for them and they really dont need the playoffs honestly. Celebration bowl is a trip to ATL for students and fans, band showcases, step shows,e tc. Not to mention a million dollar paycheck. That vs going to play in Montana isn't appealing as some of you seem to believe here. Probably why the top teams keep leaving in lieu of bowl games.

Then they'll need to go FBS. And I seriously doubt Jackson State cares to leave the other HBCUs behind for a slim chance to have the opportunity get mudholed by Alabama or UGA.

Answer this question. Do you think this kid chose JSU to further the cause and profile of HBCU football or is money the primary reason. Or is it a chance to be coached by a great ex NFL DB. I will concede that the latter may be part of the reason. Still think the Benjamin’s is the primary reason. There is nothing wrong with that.

Don’t know. Rumor mill has it that the “Payout” might be better at JSU. He is going to be a name at JSU and Deion is good at marketing. Generally the first reasoned proffered for doing something is never the real reason. Same with objections, it is never the first objection offered that is the real reason for objecting.

This is a great move for JSU and HBCU’s as a whole and I hope more follow. But I am pretty cynical on this stuff. It is more often then not, about the deal.

Yeah but I mean with the talent he has coming in, say they are that good, they are going to pulverize the meac opponent every year, you think they'd want to sneak in a fcs playoff run eventually. Sorry but the rest of the MEAC/SWAC isn't going to rise with JSU. IMHO

Personally I don't care, they can keep playing in their bowl game. Sending their 3rd best team to get slaughtered in the playoffs.

If they go to that format, that brings NCAT back into play. It also brings Tennessee State and Hampton into play as well. But I think from a contractual standpoint, the game is SWAC champ vs MEAC champ. So unless the MEAC goes away, or ESPN buys them out and changes the format, there won't be any changes within the next few years.

Easy there. My sister works for Barstool. Calling someone a rapist without credible accusations is unfair.

Portnoy => Successful businessman? Yes; Generous philanthropist? Yes -- have you heard about the Barstool Fund raising millions for bars and restaurants affected by the pandemic? ; Opinionated; Yes; Degenerate Gambler? Yes, or at least he portrays himself that way in order to identify with his clientele; Creepy 40-something hooking up with college-age girls? Yes, but there's no substantiated story to provide any credence that he's done anything non-consensual on that front. Weird fetishes, yep.

Here's the other elephant in the room. When it comes to FCS football going into its semifinal weekend, absolutely NO ONE is talking about the FCS playoffs. They're talking about Deion Sanders and Jackson State.

And with the Celebration Bowl happening this Saturday, that game will completely overshadow anything going on in the FCS playoffs.

This is the perfect storm for Jackson State, and HBCU football in general.

And yes, we all know that from an overall talent standpoint, the overall landscape of HBCU football is not on the level of football played in the MVFC, Big Sky, or the CAA. But at this point, it doesn't even matter. The only hope for the FCS playoffs, is for Jackson State to be dominant next year, and ask to opt out of the Celebration Bowl and try to go for a FCS National Championship.

Because the facts are that no matter how dominant NDSU are, they'll never be the most popular team in FCS. They are essentially that great underground rapper with great lyrics, that never gets the props it deserves, because the "fans" love the less lyrical, but more aesthetically pleasing rapper.

How would an at-large format work? Would they have a playoff to get into the Bowl?

Or would it just be a matter of ESPN saying, "We know Alcorn State won the SWAC this year but we think Deion Sanders and his big-name recruits will get better ratings so we're going to take Jackson State instead"?

I guess I understand the possibility of maybe picking 1 vs 2, or maybe a 4 team playoff, based on the "Black College National Rankings". This would open the door for Hampton, NCAT, Tennessee State and maybe even a really good D-II HBCU to compete for the Celebration Bowl. That would be kind of cool.

Deon should get a prototype and make him head Coach of a MEAC team, he needs a strong rival or he will just become like the boring ole winning Bison

The SWAC is certainly in a win win position

It doesn't bother me that the SWAC doesn't participate in the playoffs. It doesn't bother me that the MEAC doesn't either. Or the Ivy League.

In the current FCS, there are probably only 5 or 6 teams with a legitimate chance of a championship every year.

My only gripe is that a lot of dissimilar programs are all linked together under an arbitrary FCS banner. With the upcoming NCAA constitutional convention coming up in which thoughtful and learned leaders will do what the SEC tells them to do, the college landscape will be quite different in the years ahead. Will the FCS -playoffs survive as is or will other conferences go their own ways. With different conferences adapting different rules (the likely outcome of the constitutional convention), the FCS playing field will become more unbalanced.

As our culture broadly transitions from an imperfect, relatively static, meritocracy to an extremely fluid, media-ocracy (mediocrity?), this is where we are.

Though we will identify many as such, there are/will be no real heroes or villains (except for the entire Kardashian clan :)) in this transition. There are/will be those that take advantage of the change; those that lose money, status, and power (because, net net, it is a zero-sum game) due to it; and those (like FUBeAR) that sit on the sidelines, observing, and, on occasion, commenting about it.

The long-term direction to which this takes our civilization remains to be seen. Whether our next few generations will reside in a utopic nirvana or the farce comedy film “Idiocracy” will be proven to actually have been a documentary, will become known in the decades ahead.

College Football, as it always has been, remains both a mirror and a laboratory for our society as a whole. In that regard, nothing has changed.

…thus sayeth FUBeAR.

Aside: Right. Same can be said of other conferences as well. Ultimately, most are waiting in a ridiculously long line to play the annual "beat ndsu" or "beat james madison" game.

Deion does three things extremely well. 1) Play (and presumably coach) DB. 2) Promoting Deion Sanders. 3) Separating people from their money.

The problem here is 2) and 3). Deion Sanders is an employee of Barstool. He gets a check from them. When he talks to a recruit, is he speaking as a coach, or as a representative of Barstool? Did he steer him towards an NIL deal with the company that pays him as well?

It is not surprising that a top-rated DB would want to go to an HBCU to play under a HOF DB. Under normal circumstances, such a "flip" would be surprising, but not earth-shattering. Deion presumably can teach a DB things that 99.9% of other coaches cannot. That makes sense.

But the problem is... everything else.

When Deion leaves (there is no earthly way he is staying at Jackson State for more than a year, if that), does Hunter stay? Does the tie to Barstool mean he will automatically transfer to the next Barstool U. that Deion will coach at?

Barstool is a media company, and a gambling establishment. Will Barstool require as their ROI have Hunter push some of Barstool's gambling products? You can bet on Jackson State sports through their sportsbook. A real easy way for Deion and presumably Hunter to make some money is to place some bets on Jackson State sports and throw the game - or maybe just, say, the first half. What if Barstool itself wanted to throw the game to have the house get more money?

Mississippi's NIL laws are basically anything goes. Unlike PA (which has some restrictions on who can offer them), Mississippi doesn't have any restrictions on gambling establishments, bars, the Chinese government, or anything on who can offer NIL offers. Pretty much if you have a pulse you can throw money at recruits. All the rules basically say are "f you, NCAA, you can't regulate it".

Bottom line here, though, is that:

* HBCU fans are in a defensive crouch with people that are claiming that Jackson State's education is inferior to Florida State's. I understand why they are, but that's not at issue here. Deion does provide something special to a specific type of top recruit who is a DB. At a football level, I understand why Hunter would go to Jackson State, and at an education level, I see why a young African-American might want an HBCU education. Bottom line, there are a multitude of good reasons for Hunter to go to Jackson State over Florida State academically and athletically.
* HBCU fans are thrilled to put a stick in the eye of what they see as a Plantation U of Florida State, where they suspect for decades recruits were shoveled money in do-nothing jobs, and now, according to them, the playing field is leveled. No, it's not. The paymaster has gone from a cheating institution of higher learning to a for-profit national casino and sportsbook. This is not a positive development with lots of questions about the integrity of their future competitions as a result.
* People think this can be replicated at other HBCUs. It won't, unless they are also employees of large pirate media organizations who want to make their name by paying college football players.
* Deion Sanders will do what is best for Deion Sanders. It is what he has done his entire life. It is what he has done at Jackson State - for example, by skipping out of coaching some games and apparently interviewing mid-season for the TCU job. When he leaves - and it will be soon, probably within a year at the very most - he will take his son and Hunter with him, and someone will be left holding the bag at Jackson State. The hope is he will leave Jackson State better than how he found it. Unfortunately that hasn't been a part of his history.

The issue here is partially the wild-west of NIL laws, but also a system that allows Deion Sanders to have such an obvious conflict-of-interest as a head football coach. I think because people are emotionally conflating this to the HBCU vs. PWI narrative that they're missing the bigger picture. What Deion's doing should be illegal.

JSU, and other smart HBCU’s, will keep building their treasure troves provided by ESPN & other sponsors to (legally, by current NCAA ‘rules’) buy the best HS & Transfer Players, meanwhile seeking access to, and inclusion in the CFP. That will happen within 5 years.

They are playing 3D chess and the rest of FCS is playing tic-tac-toe with chalk on their driveways.

“I did not realize that Deion Sanders was in the pockets of Barstool Sports,” Kravitz said. “He’s got a podcast (21st and Prime) on their site, he’s got his own webpage on barstoolsports.com, there’s a video feature to (the podcast) as well, and then he gets this recruit.”

Kravitz added that there’s likely a lot of NIL money on the table for Hunter by going to Jackson State, and they played a clip of a recent appearance by Sanders on a podcast with Barstool president Dave Portnoy and Dan “Big Cat” Katz where Sanders eluded [sic] to a big-time signing. Katz said Sanders basically pioneered NIL and the transfer portal in college football.

“He’s using the portal of Barstool to create an opportunity for the guy that he just recruited,” Kravitz said.

Word on the street is that ESPN/ESPN Events can switch up the format after the 2023 game.

He’s in full charge there - free to move & shake & cut back against the grain & dance into the Endzone his way after successes - just like when he was returning punts or picks.

He would not be in full charge at any P5. FUBeAR doesn’t see Coach Prime as a man that tolerates constraints well and he would have constraints at a P5 that no amount of ability and charisma can shake.

I think they'll take the SWAC champ, no matter what. I think they just want the leeway to take the next best HBCU, whether they play in the SWAC, the MEAC, Big South, or the OVC.

The game on Saturday between Jackson St and South Carolina St is big. But what if it were a rematch between JSU and FAMU? That game would have even more buzz. With JSU and FAMU in the same conference, only one of those teams will be eligible to go. So I think that's the option that people want, especially if something happens to the MEAC.

So I think that's the option that people want, especially if something happens to the MEAC.

xlolx More wishful wants from the outsiders lol. As it stands today, TnSU will never get the invite and neither will NCA&T or Hampton. It is MEAC champ vs SWAC champ, contractually. I do believe the contract will be renewed, considering the success and growth.

The MEAC isn't dead. As a matter of fact, we're set to thrive over the next few years. SCSU took some lumps this year, but they're two boneheaded plays from being 8-3. That team will grow up; and so will NCCU and Norfolk State. Even Delaware State is moving in the right direction.

Not anymore but I probably wouldn’t have Dartmouth in my top 25 either. I watched JSU play a few games this fall. I didn’t rank them blindly. I might be the only guy on here that watched games for a very team he voted for. A fair number of teams I watched multiple games.

I was surprised to see you rank Jackson State considering they hadn’t played anybody over the good Ivy League teams that actually have been wining consistently OOC and looking pretty good doing it

Dartmouth? You can make a case for them being top 10, if you’re not in the inner circle that a handful of FCS teams enjoy, you’re very beatable by these good Ivy teams.

1. All eight Ivy teams routinely crank out at least 1-2 guys going to NFL training camps, yearly, and boast many still playing in the pros (a notable example: QB Ryan Fitzpatrick). Only a handful of other FCS programs can boast the same type of rate.
2. Because of the generous financial aid package many of the Ivies offer all students, the depth on some of these Ivy League teams is insane, because their WO and PWO frequently are getting large amounts of institutional $ to attend school.
3. I don't know precisely why the Ivy League denies their football players the same privilege afforded literally every other Ivy League athlete, but I can say that Ivy League football teams don't resemble other FCS teams. The top talent on these teams would start on every program in FCS and many FBS schools - that I can say for certain. But football games and championships aren't won on the back of one player.

Pfft....Fox Sports has multiple Ivy games on every year up here and I haven't seen much if at all, FBS talent. Sure, there are NFL training camp guys, all conferences have them. NDSU would blow out every Ivy team if they played. So would the top teams in the FCS. Middle of the road FCS would be on even playing ground and the bottom of the FCS would probably get beat. After watching the Harvard/Yale game this year, no way either one of those teams would come close to the top 10 in FCS....probably top 20

I'm not sure that's a good comparison. Plus, I don't think they put much around Maker. Maker should have chosen a team that had more going for it. If he really wanted to make some kind of history he should have at least gone to a team in the conference that was at the top or some other school that made it to the tournament. Jerry Rice's recruiting journey is particularly interesting. At least one analyst attributed his recruitment to MVSU as then-head coach Archie Cooley "showing up" to visit him when other (White) coaches didn't.

https://ballandorder.substack.com/p/1984-week-jerry-rice-at-mississippi

It's my impression that it was easier in those days to be "missed" by recruiters who often didn't go scout smaller schools unless they had heard of a particular player. (This was also true at Lehigh, who used to poach lots of overlooked talent in the Lehigh Valley.) Those days however are long gone.

As for Walter, I believe he decided to go to Jackson State because his brother Eddie was already going there.

The fact is Walter Payton went to Jackson State to join his older brother Eddie Payton, who was already attending Jackson State. Jerry Rice chose to go to Mississippi Valley because (to a large degree) he was overlooked by the huge programs in his backyard. The idea that they were hotly contested recruits by the Nick Sabans of their time is not a correct take.

By the time they graduated some teams of the NFL had a good idea they were getting great players. The Raiders, Rams and 49ers eagerly were signing future hall-of-famers from HBCUs and more dim franchises were not.

I don't remember Steve McNair's recruiting story totally, but that gets into the NFL and college ranks having the galaxy bad take that Black QBs can't succeed - that and McNair was not a prototypical-sized QB (he was short). The Titans knew better, and the rest is history.

HBCU's have plenty to be proud of. They gave football opportunities to kids that were overlooked by blue blood programs for decades. They had great success exploiting blue blood programs' racism and foolishness. But this idea of Jackson State "out-recruiting Ole Miss for Walter Payton" is not correct. Ole Miss wasn't looking.
