The US Coast Guard commissioned its newest 'fast response cutters' after NFL Hall of Famer and recipient of the Silver Star in WWII, Emlen Tunnell who played for the NY Giants and Green Bay Packers. He played in 9 Pro Bowls and was on two NFL championship teams. He was the first Black inducted into the HOF and the first defensive player so honored.
Tunnell was Steward's Mate First Class during WWII and was credited with saving the lives of two shipmates. The new Cutter named for him is one of seven new Sentinel-class FRCs, which will be stationed in Bahrain. As my late father said, also a 'Coastie' in WWII, "I enlisted in the Coast Guard, but they never said 'whose coast.'"
Tunnell was one of the first great safeties in the NFL and had 79 interceptions, averaging bout 8 picks a year the first 10 of his 13 year career...and back then, they only played 10-12 games a season. Being a former defensive back, he was one of my first pro football players heroes, who wasn't an Eagle!

Outstanding Stuff and I love your fathers quote, so true
The Coast Guard is the “FCS” of the military services as generally people know very little about it.

I will always remember Emlen, not because I saw him play, but because the TV guys would always say that his record would never be broken. Then Paul Krause kept getting closer and closer until finally he did. Records are made to be broken.

Yes. Article was in the USCG Foundation newsletter that we get as contributors. I thought you'd get a kick out of it.

Brings back memories as I served on a Patrol boat for 2 years, very busy down here in the Caribbean and you'll never see what happens here on the news. This Fast Response Cutter is just a more modern version of the type I was on.
Anyone who spends a few days underway on one of these things is more than ready to get back to the pier
