A friend and I are going to go to the championship game this season, and neither of us have ever been. I already bought us a couple of tickets, so we're covered there. Just curious from those that have been if there is anything we should be aware of before we show up.

It’s really grown over the years. I have uncle who lives there. Plano isn’t far away, and Dallas is not far south of Frisco. I don’t live in the Metroplex, but my dad’s side of the family does. I live in East Texas. I ate at an Italian restaurant for dinner with my parents in Plano the day of the Texas/Oklahoma game, but I can’t remember the name of the restaurant.

Park (or at least hang out/tailgate) on the west side of the stadium. If it's expected to be a fairly full crowd get in line early as the lines move slow. In general it's a pretty normal game experience.
As for outside the game check out the breastaraunts (Wild Pitch, Tight Ends, Knockouts) if you're a fan of that kind thing. Don't worry about getting a hotel too close to the stadium, it's easy to get there from Plano, The Colony, McKinney, etc. Eat at least once at a Texas BBQ joint. I'd recommend Hutchins (several locations including one in Frisco) or Pecan Lodge in downtown Dallas. JFK Museum, Cowboys Stadium, stockyards in Fort Worth are some good attractions to check out.

Thoughts on Frisco:
1. Living in Dallas, it's still far away to get there. It would be the equivalent of a team in Indianapolis building a stadium in Lebanon. It's 25 miles from DFW Airport and there is no public transportation there, so either rent a car or get someone to drive you there.
2. Lots of restaurants within distance of the stadium but, try as they might, it's less of an urban feel and more of a sprawl feel. Having a car, as noted above, helps.
3. Lots of hotel rooms to choose from.
4. Weather could be 35 or it could be 70--no way to tell.
5. Many fans like to sample barbecue when they are in town. Avoid the chains and do some hunting for the diamonds in the rough. Check Texas Monthly's web site for their latest top 150 list, with nine or ten good choices in the greater Dallas area. One of them is in Frisco - Hutchins BBQ at Preston and Main St., about 2.3 miles east of the stadium. https://hutchinsbbq.com/

Hard Eight in The Colony is excellent for BBQ, best I've had around the area. Haven't been to Pecan Lodge but I've heard nothing but great things about it and it is definitely on my want to go list. If you go and visit the Stockyards in Forth Worth the Cattlemen's Steak House is pretty decent, but there are a few other places in the area that also looked good that I haven't tried. And if you do go to the Stockyards, visiting Billy Bob's is a must. It's the world's largest honkey-tonk bar, and even if that's not your sort of thing it's still quite the sight to see just the sheer size of the place.

It probably doesn't help you a lot if you are only attending the DI-AA/FCS championship game and not spending an extended period of time in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, but that area probably has the most postseason college football games of any metro area in the U.S. If you're willing to drive a bit, the following games are possibilities:
12/18 (Sat): DII national championship game, McKinney ISD Stadium (McKinney)
12/21 (Tue): Frisco Bowl, Toyota Stadium (Frisco)
12/22 (Wed): Armed Forces Bowl, Amon G. Carter Stadium (Fort Worth)
12/28 (Tue): First Responder Bowl, Gerald J. Ford Stadium (University Park/Dallas)
12/31 (Fri): Cotton Bowl (DI-A/FBS national semifinal game), AT&T Stadium (Arlington)
01/08 (Sat): DI-AA/FCS national championship game, Toyota Stadium (Frisco)

I'll be packed for anything. I am driving my car down to Texas from Indiana and will be sleeping in my car on the way down and on the way up. My friend actually lives in Texas so we're going to ride together to the game from where they live which is roughly 4-5 hours away.
While I haven't ever been to Frisco I have been all over the DFW area truck driving. In fact I was just there today. The state of Texas is pretty awesome in general.
Is parking a bear or pretty easy? Any cheap parking lots or expensive lots I should stay away from, or are they all the same?

Screw the overrated bbq joints. You can get bbq anywhere in the state at any time.
Checkout "Babes (chicken)." Full, hearty meal w/ helluva' trimmings. If you are up for the drive, there's an authentic "Joe's Italian" on the backside of the Southlake/Keller border. You can thank me later. xreadx
There's a serious fresh fish/N'Awlins joint in Dallas off 20 but we would need an Abrams tank and police escort to get in there after dark. xlolx

I would 100% recommend Hutchins in Frisco. Even if the line is an hour long....WAIT. it is worth it.
Like Bisonoline said the brisket is amazing.
I have always parked in the area East of the stadium and walked a block or two. Less traffic and free.
The stockyards in Fort Worth were pretty cool along with an AT&T stadium tour.

If you are renting a car, they try really hard to get you to pay for one of those expensive toll transponders and told us there was no possible way to get from DFW to Frisco without it. Ended up taking the scenic route which was 5 minutes longer or something and saved a ton of money.

What is the NCAA's deal with Frisco / Toyota Stadium like?
Nothing against it, but Frisco doesn't really seem to be in "FCS territory." What would be other good cities and stadiums that could be candidates to host the championship?
I'm also curious to learn how the game ended in Frisco?
Seems like having a game somewhere farther north runs the risk of playing in freezing temps in January...and the game is certainly not best suited for a large indoor stadium.

There might be old threads that discuss this somewhere. The (usually) warm weather and space for the tailgate town activities were probably big factors in Frisco earning the bid to host the game. Plus, the airline connections are easy.

I personally think with the DI-AA/FCS and D2 championship games (and to a lesser degree the NAIA and D3 championship games) it is important to play the game(s) in a market that is served by a large airport that has many connections to many markets. It is also preferable to play the game in an outdoor, football-oriented stadium with no more than 30K capacity in a relatively warm weather area. The DFW/Metroplex area checks all of the boxes.

I live about an hour east of Frisco. I’d second Babe’s Chicken Dinner House. Arrive early. Always a wait, but worth it. Best fried chicken! The menu is pretty much set. You’ll order either fried chicken, fried chicken tenders, smoked chicken, or they occasionally have pot roast or meatloaf or some other non-yard-bird meat (don’t waste your time with that though). They will bring you unlimited salad, veggies and fresh made scratch biscuits (drizzle them with sorghum and eat them with a fork) family style. And if you can manage to save room for desert (tougher than it sounds), they usually have excellent banana pudding and an assortment of pies and cobblers.
In 2015 when we played, the weather the week prior to the game was mid 70s to low 80s. Game day was miserable. High was 34 with wind and some freezing rain. The weather here can turn on a dime, so be prepared for anything. It was also very green and yellow all over Frisco. Seemed like the businesses didn’t realize there were two teams playing.

I'm pretty sure Frisco has upped their bid for this game considerably since they first got it back in 2010. I remember for the championship games in 2011 and 2012 you could get a 4 pack of tickets for $100 and IIRC that even came with some concessions vouchers for soda/hot dogs and such. This year they jacked the price up even further to $85 each for endzone and $99 each for sideline. Then on top of that they throw a $6 per ticket fee and a $10 order fee on it.
Still plenty of tickets available if anyone is interested: https://tix.axs.com/sWjeOgAAAACiIJpzAgAAAAAT%2fv%2f%2f%2fwD%2f%2f%2f%2 f%2fBG5jYWEA%2f%2f%2f%2f%2f%2f%2f%2f%2f%2f8%3d?utm _source=ncaaticket.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=FCS&utm_content=Carouse&_ga=2.256219848.2116860483.1636473576-1700452968.1636473576

Trying to go from memory but it was called "Catfish <something>." Haven't been in a few years but the seasoning was seriously packed on the freshly prepared fish and it was almost to die for. I told the owner's wife that he also has to have crack-cocaine in the 'tater salad because I got goo-goggles of it to go lol. I'll try to locate the full name of it later on.
Forgot, I saw where you also commented about Babe's. We cannot share all of our secrets too much. xlolx

This list is like the holy grail for good eating in and about the Frisco/Plano area. B-online certainly did his due diligence to find the best the area has to offer. I'm tickled that he found Nate's seafood lol. Great place and even greater food, priced very well. I poked fun of them on a few visits from yesteryear congratulating them on FINALLY putting asphalt on their once limestone "parking lot."
Pop south on the Dallas north tollway and hit the Lawry's Prime Rib joint. The meat melts in your mouth like frigid ice cream on a wonderful 108 degree Texas summer day xlolx . Seriously, the food is damned good. Slightly priced but we live once so enjoy enjoy enjoy.

Yeah I bought two sideline tickets and it was $220 total. The best thing they had (and what I bought) was the top row at the 10 yard line, which isn't horrible. Depending on how many people are there I might end up moving more towards the middle. I prefer to sit up high between the two 40 yard lines. Being an Indiana State / Eastern IL fan I have gotten very used to sitting in great seats LOL.
