5 The 80,000 at Yale Bowl for the Army game on Nov. 3, 1923, was the largest for an amateur or professional game in New England history.

24 Holy Cross defeated Dartmouth 28-6 in Lynn, Mass., in the first nationally televised game in New England on Sept. 26, 1953.

39 Providence (1941) Arnold College ('53), Champlain ('53), Brandeis ('60), New Bedford Textile ('73), New England College ('73), Vermont (`74), Bridgeport ('75), Boston State ('82), Boston University ('97), UMass-Boston (2000), Fairfield ('03) and New Haven ('03) have had their teams disbanded.

71 Maine won the 1965 Lambert Trophy as the top I-AA team on the East Coast.

99 Gordie Lockbaum, a defensive back and wide receiver at Holy Cross, finished third behind Notre Dame receiver Tim Brown and Syracuse quarterback Don McPherson in the 1987 Heisman Trophy voting.

71 Maine won the 1965 Lambert Trophy as the top I-AA team on the East Coast.

Do you mean top "college division" team? The Lambert Trophy is awarded to the top overall team in the East. The Lambert Cup goes to the top lower division team(s). Dartmouth won the Lambert Trophy in 1965, Maine won the Lambert Cup.

The Lambert Cup was first awarded in 1957. What Maine won was called the Division II Lambert Cup.

Dartmouth won the Lambert Trophy the same year.

Right. The game for the 1965 Lambert Trophy was between Princeton and Dartmouth at old Palmer Stadium, which Dartmouth won 28-14 before 45,725 fans.

35 The bonfire on the Dartmouth Green to promote school spirit will take place the night of Oct. 19, before the homecoming game the following day against Columbia. The first official bonfire in Hanover, N.H., was in 1893 after a 34-0 Dartmouth victory over Amherst. School safety policies at Dartmouth are stricter after the deaths of 12 students in the construction of a homecoming bonfire at Texas A&M in 1999. Construction will be overseen by supervisors. Security personnel will guard the construction. There will be a parade, school songs and speeches included in the activities on the Green. Then the tower of wood will be ignited. About 10,000 spectators are expected, with flames rising 200 feet.

And only 2,000 spectators are expected to actually attend the football game the next day.

Perhaps less, seeing that it's Columbia/Dartmouth....the battle of two worst teams in the league.

I've been to several of Dartmouth's bonfires and it's loads of fun. Of course that was back when Dartmouth actually had good football teams and students actually attended games....
