Offense, defense hope to be more explosive against Boll Weevils

After several weeks of clear skies in the area, the Bearkats have had to work around rain and thunderstorms while preparing for Saturday’s game with Arkansas-Monticello.

The same thing happened last week, with the Bearkats missing some valuable practice time thanks to Mother Nature and it showed in a sluggish 17-13 victory over Angelo State. Fortunately, this time around the team has gotten in the bulk of its workouts, even though some things have been cut out.

“We have been lucky this week with the weather,” Sam Houston State head coach Todd Whitten said Thursday. “What we have had to do, though, was cut out some of the individual drills. When we have gotten to practice, we have gone straight to team, worked on our game plans and gotten some unit drills in. It has really worked out for us. We have had a good week of practice.”

There is no secret as to why Sam Houston State came within a game of claiming its third Southland Conference championship since 2001 last season. One has to look no further than 2006 SLC offensive player of the year D.D. Terry.

Terry, a converted linebacker at the beginning of the season, rushed for a school record and conference high 1,328 yards and 15 touchdowns behind a spectacular offensive line. But Terry is gone, leaving the Bearkats in search of a replacement to fill his big shoes.

And that job rests on the shoulders of a promising young talent — sophomore Chris Poullard. The Killeen Shoemaker product shined in his first career start in SHSU’s 17-13 victory over Angelo State last week, rushing for 131 yards on 22 carries, an eye-popping 6 yards a touch.

HI: What do you expect to see from Arkansas-Monticello in tonight’s game?

TW: I personally think they have improved from last year. They have a good running back (John Williams), they have a new offensive scheme — the spread. Overall, their team speed is good. They got off to a great start last week against Southern Arkansas, but I think they kind of ran out of gas. You are going to see an athletic team that is faster than the team (Angelo State) we saw a week ago.



HI: This week you have talked about how the Bearkats need to be more explosive on offense. How do you plan to do that this week against the Boll Weevils?

TW: That is one of the things we have to emphasize on both sides of the ball and in the kicking game. That is how you win football games. Last week, I think we only had two explosives offensively, and that is just not good enough. We need to have big plays in the running game and passing game. I think last week we had three drives over 10 plays, while that’s a good thing, you aren’t going to score many points. To play college football, you need to score 30 points a game, and that’s hard to do with long drives. You need big plays.

UAM DEFENSE MUST STEP IT UP

MONTICELLO — Arkansas-Monticello head coach Gwaine Mathews didn’t mince words when asked about his team’s defensive performance in last Saturday’s 38-21 loss to Southern Arkansas.

“They’ve got to step it up,” Mathews. “They didn’t answer the bell [against SAU], and that disappoints me.”

The Boll Weevils surrendered 424 yards of total offense to the Muleriders last Saturday and got outscored 31-0 after jumping out to a 21-7 first-quarter lead.

“Defensively, we just didn’t execute. It’s really that simple,” said Mathews, a former All-Gulf South Conference defensive back at Delta State who serves as his own defensive coordinator. “We had a gameplan, we just didn’t execute.

JURY STILL OUT ON UAM

Arkansas-Monticello head coach Gwaine Mathews and Sam Houston State skipper Todd Whitten found themselves in virtually the same boat after the first week of the season — neither coach was very happy with his team’s performance.

The Boll Weevils (0-1) nor the Bearkats were overly-impressive during their season openers. UAM raced out to a 21-7 first-quarter lead last Saturday in Monticello against Southern Arkansas, but committed five turnovers and got outscored 31-0 the rest of the way to lose 38-21.

Sam Houston State (1-0), an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision — formerly Division I-AA — team won its opener last Saturday at home against Division II Angelo State, but that was about it. The Bearkats jumped to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter, then hung on for dear life in the end to win 17-13.

SHSU jumps out early, defense pitches second-half shutout in 48-10 victory

Things went a little smoother Saturday and the Bearkats got the big win they were looking for heading into a tough stretch with back-to-back road games.

Sam Houston State scored on four of its first five possessions and overcame a rocky defensive start to cruise to a 48-10 victory over Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday at Bowers Stadium.

A week after holding on for dear life in a 17-14 win over Angelo State, the Bearkats failed to score on only three drives Saturday, tallying 491 yards of total offense to improve to 2-0 on the season.
