Despite our break out game at Fordham, I watched the end of the Holy Cross/Gate game and feel that the Crusaders are much stronger overall than Fordham, especially on defense. Rams have a ton of weapons on O, but their D aint tight; whereas, HC is . The OL will need to replicate what they did at Fordham to give us a chance to stay in the game and hope for some lucky breaks. Defense needs to tighten up in the secondary. We have some young, athletic kids but still showing some inexperience with blown coverages. Holy Cross 31-20.

The Hoya game should be competitive. Not sure what to make of the 'pards after the Harvard game. At Gtown, it could be dicey in that bandbox. I call it a toss up, with slight edge to Lafayette being a bit bigger, stronger and balanced on offense. Lafayette 24-22.

At home, 'gate should win handily. 35-17.

I hope Lehigh and Colgate are able to figure things out in the coming years because the PL is better when these programs are good, but it’s really a sad state of affairs what’s going on with these programs currently.

Inches away from 0-3, which is not usually how I want to see a week go at this point in the season. Aren't we supposed to have it all figured out, cruising into an inevitable and obvious conclusion? Or should we just embrace the (not quite) chaos? 26-15 on the season as we come to the end of October (already?).

Holy Cross at Lehigh Holy Cross Good on the Hawks for putting a performance together. Tough luck to not finish the job, but it does set up an opportunity to grow in the season's second half. Or perhaps it is just a false dawn, and Lehigh falls back to old ways. Holy Cross meanwhile has found its stride again, two straight emphatic wins against inferior opponents. Tough-ish stretch to close the season, with 3 of the final 4 away from the Woo, but this will be a good way to get started before the key games against other League contenders.

Lafayette at Georgetown Lafayette Or are they contenders? The Leopards get to lick their wounds after a thumping by Harvard, which isn't that different than HC's fate. At some point, though, records do not lie and the Pards are 2-5. Technically that is a worse record than Georgetown's 2-4. The Hoyas do have a common opponent, both beating Bucknell, but Lafayette was, shall we say, more convincing. Could be a defensive struggle, and I wouldn't put it past the Leopards to drop a game they shouldn't, but really they shouldn't.

Bucknell at Colgate Colgate It has been a steep and sudden descent for Raider football, and the saddest part of losing to HC wasn't the disappointment in falling, but the sense of inevitability about it (a certain picker's selections notwithstanding). There is some skill on the team, and enough institutional support to rebuild, but right now it is a lot of muddling through. The League schedule shook out nicely for a good start, but this may be the best chance to get to a 3rd League win (finishing .500 in the League!). No reason to believe the Bison will be easy. They have a win over Cornell (unlike another program in this game), and Cecchini is 1-0 as a head-man against the Raiders. Of course, that snapped a 5-game Colgate win streak, and is only Bucknell's second in the last 15 years. How much does inertia matter at this stage?

Tavani would 1000% lose this game to GT. Garrett has been known for let down games as well. If Jordan and the Oline are still banged up, it will be interesting. It has all the makings of a trap game.

With the new grandstand, it now seats about 3750.

I missed the 2019 Lafayette game at Georgetown when they were doing renovations, had removed the home side seats, had a capacity under 2000 fans, and sold out weeks in advance.

It's become obvious that our 'peer' schools, when it comes to football, are the Pioneer League, MEAC, and maybe SWAC. We are 'scheduling up' and the records reflect that.

Colgate 24 Bucknell 17 - Colgate is struggling mightily in recent weeks. The Bison provide some positive mojo....
Lafayette 31 Georgetown 24 - The Hoyas have been a reasonably tough out most of the season. With that said, the 'Pards keep their PL title hopes alive with a scrappy win...
Holy Cross 34 Lehigh 6 - Lehigh's performance last week definitely got Chesney and company's attention. That's not a good think for the Mountain Hawks....

Indeed I took my nephew (recall Carney2 had called him "The Jinx" as any Pard game he attended we lost! I believe it was broken at #150!) who was a frosh at Ocean City NJ HS. His dad drove him to Vincentown Diner where we had lunch and then I proceeded with him to Easton. It was a cold rain at Vincentown and the snow started just as I got off the 295 onto Rt 29. Trees down and folks had chain sawed the higher end laying on wires so one lane could get through at a time. We made it toward end of first quarter. Still snowing. It was a wet snow and I estimated 8 inches in stands. It stopped at halftime as I recall I went over to the Wawa to get batteries for what - my digital camera! I think all of 300 people. I heard after Tavani had tried to get the Patriot League to postpone it but no go. I decided not to drive back in the dark as trees were falling still. We searched in vain for over an hour for a hotel. Luckily my erstwhile travel agent found the very last room in the new Bethlehem Sands!

Yes that's right... 10 years ago was the historic snowstorm. I think the low point was going scoreless in two straight games in 2015, one of them was against Georgetown. May have been three straight games... 2015-2016 was pretty awful... hell let's do a decade review of LC football...

2010 - many close games, two wins, started off with a foreboding loss to Georgetown
2011 - the FIOS Bowl, one point loss to Hoya after a thumping in Fargo; one of our worst performances I've seen (Harvard), and a nice OT win vs Colgate (INT return for TD)
2012 - Start 3-0, inexplicably lose on the MOON, sit 5-2, then lose by three to Hoya and do not win another game
2013 - QB shuffle, finally plays the frosh Drew Reed, 1-5, then 4-1 with a lose to Colgate... them whipped by UNH (thus starting THE THREAD)
2014 - uninspiring 50-3 win vs Bobby Morris, loss to Bison in OT, miracle win at Colgate, 150
2015 - the wheels come off; only win is vs Wagner, two straight 35-7 losses, one of them to Hoya, then two straight 42-0 losses (the low point), yet the Lehigh game is only 49-35 (we made a late comeback)
2016 - we were at least competitive on paper; lost to Army 62-7, then 42-0 next week to Bucknell (wtf?), Frank makes a comment about money... adios Frankosaurus
2017 - JG show starts with some surprising wins, and a competitive Lehigh game (where we got too conservative and lost by 7)
2018 - very bad start, lose to Hoya, Lehigh game was embarassing yet we played Army competitively prior week
2019 - we end 4-1 after starting 0-7, lose to Hoya

We went 4-6 against Georgetown in 2010s... disgrace

Sure it is tough to keep a great string going like we had 2004-2009, and yes there will be down years. I guess that's what we expected in 2010-11. I recall 2012 seemed promising and then it blew up. Looking back, it was apparent something was structurally wrong with LC football by 2012. There really was no progress after that. End of 2013 was a flash in the plan but by the early 2014 season, it was clear that 2013 was a mirage.

I think the beginning of our decline was the 2009 Lehigh game… coaching cost us the game.

I recall 2 plays - the game ending interception and the punt returner from Lafayette, Nathan Padilla (how I recall the name!) making the foolish decision to move the ball from one hand to other with two Hawks closing in fast and IN HIS OWN END ZONE AND TOWARD THE HAND CLOSEST TO THE ONCOMING OPPONENTS! Of course he wasnt able to secure it before he was crashed/stripped of it. He was crossing the goal line when it happened and I believe Lehigh recovered at its 2 yard line. P4L, you recall that bobble?

Pard4Life

Yes. It was recovered in the end zone for a TD though.

Most sinful plays were the hook and ladder call on the first drive. And the four straight run up the middle from the G. Points there and not even a game. Curley did not cost us this game.

Games like this are examples of why competing without scholarships is such a hill to climb.

Georgetown has lost three of its top four receivers to injury and the second quarter predictably bogged down as a result.

Games like this are examples of why competing without scholarships is such a hill to climb.

Georgetown has lost three of its top four receivers to injury and the second quarter predictably bogged down as a result.

Without trying to sound disrespectful, I have an honest question (or two).

1) Do you think Georgetown is a better overall fit for the Pioneer league instead of the PL?

2) Has anyone in power (e.g. the AD, BofT, etc.) had discussions about moving out of the PL and into the PL*for football?

Q. Do you think Georgetown is a better overall fit for the Pioneer league instead of the PL?
A. Not at all. The PFL model is based on a different admissions model for athletes and the use of merit aid upon admission which Georgetown does not, will not, and has no interest in. Every PFL school can offer merit aid in the form of "academic scholarships." Georgetown offers zero academic/"merit" aid.

Q. Has anyone in power (e.g. the AD, BofT, etc.) had discussions about moving out of the PL and into the PL for football?
A. None.

Got it.

Thanks for passing this along. I didn’t know about the different models.

I want all PL teams to be competitive and play at the same level playing field. I always have been disappointed that GTown won’t go to a scholarship model like the other league members (I understand why they won’t, but it is still frustrating). Also am frustrated that Bucknell doesn’t allow 5th year players under any circumstances (unlike other members who generally permit it when a player is injured under certain conditions).

I think it’s good for our league for all teams to be competitive in the league and out of the league. The two issues I mentioned above are a big roadblock to achieving that parity.

Continuing with the tangent theme, the only time I've seen Liberty play was in a DI-AA/FCS round of 16 playoff game at Villanova in 2014, a game in which the Wildcats rallied from behind to win 29-22. (The game was one of only two DI-AA/FCS playoff games I've attended, the other being the memorable Lehigh/Towson game in suburban Baltimore in 2011.) That game out on the Main Line had some of the worst conditions I've ever experienced at an outdoor game; it was about 40-45 degrees F and rained the entire game. IIRC, the game started at 6 PM because the Holy War (i.e. St. Joe's/Villanova basketball) was played at the Pavilion earlier the same day. In addition to Liberty/Villanova football, I also attended a different Philadelphia Big Five matchup earlier that day; Temple edged La Salle 58-57 at the Palestra.

Right, Frank's team never came back if they got down more than 7 points. If our message board were not 'cancelled', I could look this up because I've posted on it before... the largest rally I can recall is being down 11 at Lehigh in 2005. All i can recall is Russo ahead by 16 (1995 - losing with 2 TDs and two 2 pointers and OT TD), 19-0 the following year (losing, 23-19) and 21-0 in 1997 (losing again 43-31) vs Lehigh. Just able to check in since yesterday's game. Son and daughter-in-law arrived late afternoon from N.C. and busy since catching up.

Was at Goodman for a very frustrating loss. Not surprised if HC took us lightly and found themselves in dogfight. Unfortunately, for us, we made some hellacious mistakes that were hard to take. Some stupid personal foul calls that were uncalled for, one which allowed HC to keep the ball after a 3rd and 15. I agree, there was a lack of discipline that was troubling. There was some trash talking out on the field and some late 'extra-curricular' stuff that the Refs failed to address before things started getting 'chippy'. A bit of kerfuffle between the teams going to halftime. One of the HC assistants (big guy with a beard) was instigating the yelling rather than directing his players to locker room. Unbelievable how we were not able to run the ball after gashing Fordham for 260 yards the week before. Overall, defense played well, but the offense put them in some short yardage situations that were costly. We have some good young athletes so there is hope for the future; though I agree a new voice is needed in the OC position. The next three games are all 'winnable', meaning if we can start shooting ourselves in the ass, we can win. Of course, we are just as capable of losing them. Planning to go to Lewisburg next week, and the interesting question is whether there will be more than 1,000 people in attendance. I doubt there were 2,000 at Goodman yesterday. Morning rain may have kept some away, but still a putrid turnout. I'll say this, the guys are still playing with spirit despite the lousy season and I think they sense they are getting better. Now, they have to learn to how to win by playing smarter.

The possibility that we will not win a league championship with this group is troubling and doesn't bode well for the future. Last week's squeaker doesn't give me much hope either. You can get away with that at a big FBS school, where you have the luxury of loading up on assistant coaches/associate head coaches and coordinators. But it doesn't work at our level of FCS. One example was Bowden at FSU. I've heard the same about him and others over time. The 'big man' gets 'em n the door and the others coach 'em up and game plan. Not saying Bowden wasn't a good coach earlier in his career, but at that level, once the icon reaches a certain age, he's kept because of what he can draw in the door (both players and $$$).

I think Garrett has recruited pretty well, and he has developed players. I see kids improving. I think his recent teams have played hard and fundamentally sound. Even the running game has gotten notably better this year. The issue, I think is his general offensive philosophy/play calling. The offense has been the weak link of the team for years. I think his offense is difficult on the QB and that’s been a continuing issue. We had Shoemaker and the future was bright, but he left. I think Garrett has done a good job with a frosh QB. +1! It’s been painfully obvious that he has trouble either being too complicated for most QBs, or he doesn’t have the ability to transfer his knowledge to players. It’s a simple game. Rarely do coaches succeed with scheme alone.

While touting the league best record and a FBS win (UConn would be middle of pack CAA team this year), I still dont see HC at the level of talent I saw when LU got smoked by Nova or even Richmond. You guys either played down to LU, or slept walked to a win over them. More talent and better coaching? Hard to argue. But I just dont see Jeff Wileys, Tom Ciaccos, Jerome Fullers, Gil Fenerty, Rob McGovern and Gordie Lockbaums on that roster just yet Sader. It is what it is....Holy Cross struggled in this league without scholarships...different ballgame with schollies.

Holy Cross still hasn't shown the consistency Lehigh had along the lines of Higgins, Lembo, and the first half of Coen's tenure. If Chesney leaves for another offer it's not certain HC can keep up its current level.

Absolutely. Tavani got away with it until Bob Hefner left. I played under both. Tavani had about as much football knowledge as Joe Buck. Hefner knew how to teach the game.

Hefner was great! I didnt play but sat back against coaches box before it was lifted up in 2006 and most of the year the windows were open. Could hear Heffner coaching up during the game as he got on the "phone" with various OLs. He was a huge loss. I know hes got a great thing at Northwestern but has he ever expressed desire to return as HC? Island I presume you played for Hefner? Wasnt he the one who talked Frank out of a 50 yard FG try at Lehigh in 2005 in last minute of game?

I guess we're going to have to start a new board. It would be a shame to lose all that history. We were easily one of the most colorful FCS boards. Loathed by the administration, blackballed by the coaching staff, cited and quoued by the local papers . . . it was a blast while it lasted.

Maybe I could contact Tapatalk to see if they could help.

Great! It really would be a shame to lose the history. Especially the 150 game stuff

Just a decade ago Lehigh was in the midst of 3 straight 10 win seasons (something no other PL program has accomplished since 1986) and an 8 win 2013 campaign. They spent numerous weeks ranked and had a Payton Runner-up.

Then there was the 1998-2006 stretch. The Lehigh bar is high. Holy Cross hasn't come close to that type of sustainable success the last 40 years....

I don't think I appreciated just how dominant Lehigh was from 1998-2001 -- those are Mark Duffner type results. It also spanned two coaches (Higgins and Lembo).

This four year stretch was 45-5 with four of those losses coming in the playoffs. PL record during this stretch was 24-1.

Fordham's 40-10 record (21-3 against the PL) from 2013 to 2016 was pretty solid too.

It is, but 3 undefeated regular seasons in 4 years? With a 10-1 season sandwiched in between? Think about that?!?! And it's not like Lehigh was playing scrub teams; won at Delaware, went down to South Carolina and beat up on Wofford, good Ivy League teams etc. Colgate was also a very worthy league adversary at that point too....

Not disagreeing at all. Although, in fairness, I had forgotten how strong Lehigh was from 1998 to 2001 until a few years ago when you reminded me on another thread-lol Either way though, today's HC has a long way to go before matching 1980s HC. Way to go before even matching the previous runs that Lehigh, Colgate and Fordham can all point to respectively.

Definitely, but the 2-3 playoff record with both wins against Sacred Heart firmly makes them a tier below that Lehigh run.

Again, not comparing Fordham (2013-2016) with Lehigh (1998-2001). Am saying that the school which has never won any playoff games is a tier below the Lehigh run. A tier below the Fordham run. A tier below the Colgate 2015-2018 run (or even simply their 2002 run) too. Not to mention that same school's own epic run during the 1980s.

Was somewhat suprised at the time the 2013-14 Fordham teams didn’t make deeper runs in the playoffs. They had great offenses and played some really good ball. They routed an undefeated Lehigh team who beat UNH in the Bronx. Dropped 52 on us. That was the beginning of the end of a solid run for us from 2010-2013.

Enough with this love fest... we had the Frankosaurus stomping around the sidelines. Our 2009 was special and had a true shot at being undefeated in the regular season. Even carney was excited at the possibilities. It's so tough to do. We swept our Ivy schedule (miracle). We lost to Liberty by handful of points because IMO we were way too conservative. Holy Cross with Dominic Randolph was going to be a battle anyhow, but I still insist the refs cost us the game (and the PL later apologized). And the Lehigh game fiasco - which I place all on coaching.

Our 2004-2009 was a great run, but I cannot help but think how much better it could have been... there was a lot of 'boneheaded' stuff that went on. Had we beaten App State in 2005, I think we could have kept going (and we were tied with them late, and had a very key late INT called off - this was before replay - which should have stood).

He talked Frank out of A LOT of stuff! I don’t know about the time you mentioned as it was wayyy after me. Tavani was my position “coach” but we watched film with OL. And Hefner ran the meetings 100% of the time. It was Russo’s offense and calls but Hef was the guy.

In his case he has to be making mid 6 figures as a position coach. IMO he didn’t have the shmoozing ability that a HC needs to get in the front door, fund raise,,etc. Nor does he probably care to.

That call against Holy Cross was disgusting. Still have the memory ingrained in me of watching the grainy video on that public station our games used to air on.

Mainly just wanted to post as I am mainly a lurker on this board but did post a little on the old Lafayette board. I'm sure there are others like me out there. Would love it if someone started up a new board.

Seriously, if you're a D1 program, how do you not have a message board? The HC message board, as wacked as it can be, shows that Holy Cross has a legit D1 following....many of the PL boards are as dead as doornails....no one cares.

Very true. Though the numbers are much larger, when the Philadelphia Eagles decided to drop their message board in spring 2020 and migrate everything over to Reddit, one of the message board regulars was able to transfer the board over and started a collection to maintain the "new old" board. He easily got the money needed.

Though I didn't post on the Lafayette board often, I did post there occasionally, especially during football or basketball games I attended* when I could post via Tapatalk.

*Excluding games at Lafayette itself because I ALWAYS get terrible reception there, likely due to some sort of interference.

Basically what pards123 said... the guy did not like parents posting negative stuff about other players. Ok... so just kick them off and keep the board (????) I also do not understand what makes him think it's his decision. Sure he registered it 14 years ago because we collectively got sick of the spammy and anonymous voy board. The Lafayette board is a public service for all us Pards to enjoy, not a forum subject to his whims.

Didn't "Carney2" (possibly one or even two other names we'd know here) get banned from the last Lafayette forum before it shut down? If I remember correctly, he said something here about the "smart commenters" having moved on, while only the program's apologists had remained.
