What good are you talking about? This was a huge win, so congratulations. Maybe you'll give San Diego a better game than you guys did last year. The fact is though Drake won't crack the top 25 after this win. Many will say it was either a fluke, or Illinois State was overrated. There's no love for the non-schollie schools. And besides, what real schedule are you talking about? You mean Waldorf and Wisconsin-Platteville? Having Illinois State and Northern Iowa on your schedule doesn't make it a real schedule.

I've never said San Diego has ever had a good schedule. Keep talking about Azuza, but this is the 40th year we have played them so get over it. The game is not going to go away any time soon. Why doesn't it? Until you have at least played them yourselves, I wouldn't knock them. Northern Iowa can be a pretty tough team for anyone come Saturday, let alone in the playoffs.

I'm not knocking Illinois State or Northern Iowa. I know those are good teams. My point is that having those two teams with the rest of the teams on their schedule doesn't make it a "real" schedule as was stated. If everyone is going to dog Azuza, then you need to dog Waldorf and Wisconsin-Platteville.

Well, I'd still say Drake won a pretty good victory today. Being that San Diego beat Drake last year 37 - 0. Quite an improvement for Drake since they lost to Northern Iowa last year 7 - 48. Makes the case for San Diego a little bit more cognant I believe when it comes to this year's playoff possibilities, depending, of course. It will be interesting, regardless of the so-called cream puffs some teams play. One can slight Boise St. for playing Weber St. as well, but one has to fill the schedule with someone don't they?
Now, if San Diego can do to Drake like they did last year, and remain undefeated, I'd be a wondering who the Selection Committee for the FCS might just consider this time around.

By the way, didn't Illinois State beat Southern Illinois last year 37 - 10?...and didn't Illinois St. give Youngstown St. a pretty good game last year, finishing 9 - 4 for the season? Southern Illinois making the playoffs too, if not mistaken. But, of course, that was last year, but a greatly improved team in Drake evidently, which impresses me. Heck, it's already getting interesting.

There;s no doubt it was a good victory. There's alos no doubt that if Drake or San Diego go undefeated, they will not get into the play-offs. They could be in the top ten in the rankings, and not get in.

They still are:

Scholarships: PFL 0 vs D-III 0

Facilites: PFL Crap vs D-III Crap

I am also one that has put non schollies in with D-III schools forever. I came to this board this morning to give Drake all the props in the world for beating Illinois State but there are too many non-scholly fans rubbing our noses in it for me to want to do that anymore. Schollies make a difference but it is not everything
SUNY Buffalo has the same amount of schollies as Penn State, yet Buffalo would probably lose to Albany in a game 50% of the time.
PFL facilities are not bad at all
Unless you have traveled the country to all of these schools how would you know? Some of these teams have nice, large, stadiums, and you are trying to tell me that programs like Dayton, San Diego, Davidson (rich), and Valpo wouldn't be able to afford D-I facilities?
Attendence makes you move down a level?
Indiana St. get less than 3,000 a game, and I've never heard anyone say you can judge the callibre of a football team by how many fans come to the stadium.

This was an embarrassing loss (no offense to Drake), but we are not the laughing stock of the GFC and most of FBS. Now we have to win the rest of our home games (Murray St., UNI, Indiana St., and Western Ill.) and win 4 of 6 roads games (Eastern Ill, Mizzou, Mizzou St., Youngstown, North Dakota St., and Souther Ill).

No easy task. We can do it, but i do not think we will. We had a hard enough schedule as it was , now we lose to the team that was supposed to be our "lock" of a win game, along with Murray State. What a joke.

I could go on and on but I am not.

I am not taking anything away from Drake, they out-coached, out-hussled, and out-played us. But if we play Drake 20 more times, they might not win one of them. I do not know what happened but I am putting the blame directly on the Coaches shoulders.

It was unbelievable to watch

cause the gap between the non schollies and the schollies. might be getting closer....hopefully drake can pull off another thriller when they play UNI....it would really show the beauty of college of fball and also show that on ANYGIVENSATURDAY(or thursday) someone can be beat

Might...Might Not...

I will not for a moment minimize Drake's victory last night...the best team won...

CONGRATS to Drake on a big opening win...

But to extrapolate a single win into some of the statements I've read is going a little too far...

Drake does not deserve to be a top 10 team in the next poll...ranked, OK, I can go with that...but Top Ten... Please...

Squirm...I don't think anybody is squirming right now.....let's see how the rest of the season goes...

PFL supporters...you have earned the right to gloat a little...but be realistic...

One win does not vidicate anything...one win does not change the course of time...one win is one win...

Again, CONGRATS to Drake on an outstanding win...

Great Post!!!!!

As a PFL supporter, a Drake parent and one who was at the game, my hat is off to the boys for a great win. Illinois State had some better athletes (#2 was running wild all night) but Drake made big play after big play to get this win. All three touchdowns were big plays. Additional big plays happened all night.

After reading the posts, I could predict what each poster would say before I read it.

The bottom line is that:

1. Someone thought ISU was good - weren't they #7 in the Sports Network and Coaches polls, #11 in the AGS poll?

2. Didn't Patty Viverito say that it was unfair for the PFL to play funded programs, that they couldn't compete? Bet Patty is choking down breakfast as we speak...

I am a guy that usually says, wait until the results are in. I am saying that in this case. A win at ISU followed by losses at San Diego and UNI will not help.

But if this team runs the table and doesn't get in the playoffs, there should be lawsuits filed - and I will be the first one to contribute to the legal fund.

To all you PFL fans:

You really expect me to believe that Drake magically got so good in the offseason, especially after losing their coach, that they can contend in the FCS. Remember our game at Drake last year. It was boring. Game over 10 seconds in.

It makes me wish I could watch playback of this game and see what happened. I'm afraid I'll get suckered into spending my money and coming down to the ghetto just to watch our backups clean up Drake Stadium again.

When you read the recap of this game, the story just gets more and more wacky!

http://www.godrakebulldogs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=71156&SPID=8123&DB_OEM_ID=15700&ATCLID=1180932

Drake's winning touchdown march started on its own 10 yardline with 1:23 left. A false start on a third and 10 yard situation pushed the Bulldogs back to their five yardline.

But Ingle kept the drive alive when he spotted fullback Willie Cashmore (Kansas City, Mo.) on a 23-yard pass to the 28 yardline.
Facing a second down and 10-yard situation, Agyei grabbed Ingle's pass after it went off the finger tips of Illinois State cornerback Jason Tate and sprinted down the left sideline into the endzone stunning a crowd of 12,167 fans at Hancock Stadium Thursday night.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think about this," said Steve Loney, who was making his head coaching debut at Drake after being named the interim coach June 18. "These guys have made my life wonderful."

It was the first college reception for Augustine Agyei, who has been a sprinter on the Drake track and field team the past two seasons.

"We finally went to a silent count under center," said Ingle. "It was a Hail Mary play to Augie (Agyei) who was in single coverage with his defender. It wasn't the best pass I've thrown, but once Augie caught it I knew he was gone."

The other thing I noticed was Luke Drone's 3 INT's. He had an interception problem last year too - and it looks like these turnovers had a huge impact on the game. Not to take away from Drake's win - they clearly made plays - but to me it looks like the Redbirds killed themselves pretty effectively, too.

Guess UNI better look out, huh?

Just don't call them NIU, that's Northern Illinois. They get rather particular over there in Iowa territory about that, even though 'The Sporting News' out of St. Louis did the same thing last year saying UNI in a caption under a photo of RB Garrett Wolfe with a NIU on his helmet.

SI did it this year under a picture of a cheerleader with the UNI logo on her, um chest, calling us Northern Iowa University. Bad mistake, that's one of the first areas I notice, think I would have caught the letters....Maybe not.xrolleyesx

There;s no doubt it was a good victory. There's alos no doubt that if Drake or San Diego go undefeated, they will not get into the play-offs. They could be in the top ten in the rankings, and not get in.

I disagree here. If Drake goes undefeated, it will be with wins against pre-season top-15 teams Illinois State (on the road) and Northern Iowa (at home) as well as beating God's gift, the Torerererereos. They should be in the playoffs and would have earned it. Even with wins over Waldorf and UW-Platteville. Just about every FCS team has a patsy, some have more. What was San Diego's biggest win last year? Drake.

Apprently you don't follow FCS football enought to know who San Diego played last year. I would hardly say Drake was any kind of competition last year (37-0 @ Drake). The only point I'm tryingto make is the same point that I was saying about San Diego last year; the PFL schedule is just way to weak to have an opportunity at the play-offs. It's hard for the committee to overlook games against Butler, Valpo, Morehead, or any of the other bottom of the barrel PFL (better yet FCS) teams. Now if Drake's games against Waldorf and Wisconsin-Platteville were schools from auto-bid confrences (no need to be ranked, but wouldn't hurt) instead, then I would say there is a case for an Undefeated Drake or maybe even a 1 loss drake to make it into the play-offs.

On another note. I'm glad to see that Drake may actually give San Diego a run for their money this year in the PFL. I'll see you guys on October 13th. Hopefully we will both be undefeated at that time. Could be the makings of a great FCS game.

I am aware of them beating Yale, and how many scholarships do the Ivy League schools give out? I know the Ivy plays some good football, so does the Patriot League. I just don't see them being able to stand up to a schedule of scholarship FCS teams on a week in and week out basis, at least not from the Auto-bid conferences.
Same with the Pioneer League. Had San Diego beaten an auto-bid league team or two, even with Azusa on their schedule, they would have had a good case. I would have supported them. I would have argued for UNI at 7-4, and still think we were left out simply for conference quota issues, but I would have been more on USD's side at 11-0 with a couple of better wins.
Its early. Drake's win could prove to be a complete "1st game, new coach, no scouting report, overlooking a 'lower' team" fluke. Illinois State could still prove to be no match for Indiana State. Drake could turn into a power, or not. There's a ways to go. Last year, UNI beat an Iowa State team by all but the scoreboard, topped play-off teams YSU and Illinois State, but also got beat by WIU and D-II (play-off team) North Dakota and destroyed by SIU.

To be fair, Drake had no passing game. Cole Ingle, who engineered the remarkable comeback last night, had practiced about a week prior to the USD game, after suffering a broken hand during the offseason. Drake's play calling was extremely conservative, and the Toreros stuffed the run.

It will be different this year.

If Illinois State wins the rest, it will turn out to have been a great win, even if it is a bit of a fluke. I say that because of the huge stat disparity in the 1st half but only 10 pts scored. ISU had chances, it appears, to win early. They didn't, through a combination of Drake making plays and their making mistakes-thus the first game comments.

If Illinois State turns out to suck, thus the comment about not matching up with Indiana State (whom I believe Drake may have given a game to last year and won 50% of the time against), then it will not be that big of a win.

It is a good win. A nice win for their program. Certainly the biggest win for the Pioneer League for several years, at least. We'll see how drake does in a few weeks after they play Waldorf and UW-Platteville while UNI matches up with Iowa State and South Dakota State.
