Surprised to see Bomar on there considering he has never taken a snap in FCS competition. It makes sense to include him as he'll definitely be on the "watch" if he can follow the lead of the FBS transfers that have done good things at Sam.

Richardson isn't even the 3rd best running back in the SoCon. why he is on this list is beyond me

I've seen McLeod, and I've seen Scott Phaydavong of Drake. Phaydavong is better. Not just better numbers. Better period.

Yeah, pre-season 1st team all-american isn't but the 3rd best in the conference..... Now I have stated all along, when a previous poll listed him as a unanimous choice, I thought that was a little much. He definitely is an all-american maybe even first team, I just thought a few people would have left him off their first team selections with all of the great RB's in this division. BUT he should definitely be on the Payton watch and probably in the upper half of the group to start the season!

What numbers are you looking at?
2006 stats:
Cooper: ATT 160 | YDS 807 | TD 8.....REC 40 | YDS 247
Richardson: ATT 302 | YDS 1,676 | TD 30.....REC 30 | YDS 285

I'm sure if Richardson returned kicks he would own everyone in the all-around category. Even with those stats, he only beats Richardson by .91 yards per game. Cooper isn't even arguably the better all-purpose back. If ASU wanted him to return kicks he could easily do it.

What really irritates me is that every journalist thinks he needs to spell out what happened to Bomar and why he ended up at SHSU. I think we got the effing point 50 articles ago. Because if you don't know by now, you're not a college football fan and you're NOT reading that particular article.
And I agree, Bomar should not be on this list. He needs to prove himself at this level. Now I fully expect him to do so and should be on this list in the near future ;)

Clyde has been a model of consistency... started as a true freshman in 2004 and has been improving each year since. He now becomes the primary option and focal point of our passing game. Although Coach Broadway has vowed to using a more balanced attack and speaks about team goals and not individual accomplishments, I've noticed that he always pauses to mention Clyde Edwards and points to him as a true team leader. I guess it helps to have the hardest working kid as your best player... Edwards also carries a 3.9 gpa in Marketing. A class kid!xthumbsupx

Maybe his numbers will be higher now that we're in a more traditional offensive package...then again maybe not because he'll see more "special" coverage. Really doesn't matter... I think Clyde is more concerned with winning the conference championship and graduating with honors.
Good luck to all the candidates and congrats to whomever is the winner.

The problem is, the award, just due to its very nature, is going to be very stat driven. There's no way to get around that. Heck, the Buchanan Award is even more stat-heavy. A WR in a system where he isn't fed the ball will never win the Payton Award because he'll always be dwarfed number-wise by other receivers who do get the ball. He could very well be a deserving candidate, but he'll not even get consideration with those numbers. And agreed, there are more important things in life than winning the Payton Award. xpeacex

Cal Poly 6'6" 228 Jr. WR Ramses Barden did not make the first list, but I think he will be on the updated list when it is released.
Through the first three games he has 21 receptions for 472 yards and 6 touchdowns. He is averaging 22.5 yards per catch. Not bad for a WR playing in a triple option offense.

September 16th, 2007, 02:12 PM
I've seen Barden play three times, and he is a beast. His best feature is his 6'6" body, which makes him at least 5 inches taller than most corner backs he faces, and allows him to grab a lot of "jump balls."
I would love to see Lex Hilliard win the award, but I have a feeling the Griz will rotate running backs enough this year that he won't get the stats - hopefully I am wrong, though.

Lex will get his 1300 yards and 15 TD's but that won't be enough as the Payton is based on stats. Our other RB's will combine for another 1200 yards and 10-12 TD's. When you have 4 RB's that could start for most Big Sky teams you have to keep them happy. A nice problem for Hauck, too bad for Lex who will get about 18 carries a game average and 90 to 100 yards.

I think Mr. Coulson needs to add Jayson Foster, QB, Georgia Southern, to the list of candidates!
Through 2 games, Foster's stats are:
RUSHING: 39 rushes, 484 yards, 9 TDs (12.41 yard per carry avg.).
PASSING: 24 passes, 12 completions, 182 yards (15.16 avg.), 1 TD.

I will certainly be satisfied if this results in us winning games and going deep into the playoffs. I would also guess this result would make Lex happy as well.

I will certainly be satisfied if this results in us winning games and going deep into the playoffs. I would also guess this result would make Lex happy as well.
Yeah but you, the Griz Nation, and Lex all know that Lex could get 2000 yards, average 150 yards a game, and get 25 TD's if they let him have 26-27 carries a game.

Damn right he could. Lex has a great combination of size, strength and breakaway speed that he could eclipse 2000 yards if given the chance.

Cal Poly has a new QB this year that can throw more than just "jump balls". Last year the jump ball to Barden was Cal Poly's passing offense. This year Barden is his primary receiver, but Jonathan Dally he is doing a better job spreading the ball to his other receivers and backs and he is hitting them in stride which is helping the yards per catch average and TDs.
I have seen Lex play and he is certainly one of most talented players in the FCS. I am sure we will see him playing on Sundays.

I noticed this in our games last year, Stang, but didn't want to sound like I was smacking Cal Poly. It seemed when the Stangs were in a pinch, they would just throw it up to Barden, who usually came down with the ball. Good luck to Poly the rest of the season, hopefully we can renew our rivalry soon (I know we need to travel down there).

I think Mr. Coulson needs to add Jayson Foster, QB, Georgia Southern, to the list of candidates!
Through 2 games, Foster's stats are:
RUSHING: 39 rushes, 484 yards, 9 TDs (12.41 yard per carry avg.).
PASSING: 24 passes, 12 completions, 182 yards (15.16 avg.), 1 TD.

36-61 for 358 yards 4TDs and 1 INT. That is great stat line! Sounds like Bomar was chucking it all over the place.

Josh Hohnson's stats after just 2 games.
47-59, 684 yards, 10 TD 0 INT, 14 carries 186 yards, 13.3 ypr
QB Rating: 232.9763
Not bad numbers. I know his competition is not the greatest, but the numbers are still impressive.

No. Jonathan Dally is a JC transfer that came in and won the starting job over Matt Brennan. Both are juniors.
