The CSN Way: Fearless Picks
Charles Burton, CSN Columnist

Nice read Chuck--But I still have hard time seeing Holy Cross staying with UMass for four quarters. I think UMass's depth and atheticsm takes over in the fourth quarter, though the Crusaders certainlyhave the tools to make it interesting.

Cal Poly wins vs. Texas St.

SDSU beats WIU.

I am not claiming a bias, or lack of knowledge of football outside of a given region but ... as much as I like the Crusaders, no chance against the boys not from Boston.

Also, SDSU is a CLEAR and HEAVY favorite against Western Illinois. I personally think WIU is much better than people give them credit for and will "upset" SDSU. After all, WIU is a traditional GFC power & 2 years removed from a semi-final appearance. Also, the Leathernecks hail from McComb, IL ...Carbondale is the home of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale ...the Salukis.

You're right that HC is going to get their butts kicked against Umass but the Minutemen are from Amherst which really isn't that close to Boston. Probably 2 hours? I went to Umass when Lehigh played them in '98 in the quarterfinals. What a great atmosphere that was.

#22 South Dakota State over Western Illinois
An intriguing matchup featuring a current Gateway member (WIU) and a future Gateway member (SDSU). With the Jackrabbits proving to be great road warriors in 2006, my feeling is that this trend continues in 2007 starting in Carbondale against a young Leatherneck team.
Jack-o-Leathers 28, Rabbit-Necks 20

Okay, who is he really picking here? He mixes up the mascots so much that he will be right either way. Are the "Jack-o-Leathers" or the "Rabbit-Neckks" the Leathernecks or the Jack Rabits? Which one is which?

In his write-up he says that SDSU will continue to be road warriors, so it appears to be SDSU he ispicking to win. He also lists the title as "SDSU over Western Illinois." In addition to the confusion of the mascots he is also geographically challenged because he thinks they will be playing in Carbondale, home of SIU, and not MaComb, home of WIU.

I find it funny hes trying to write about a team who he has no clue about... including where their campus is.

He's right on one thing, if there is one team in the FBS that won't let an FCS sneak up on them it is UNC. They've learned.

41 point margin for the appst-michigan game? Interesting.... It could be that much of a blow out, who knows. I think it will be between 20-30 points. Plus, the Ohio st-ysu game being predicted by a two point margin? Come on

I have absolutely no idea why, but folks around the country seem to have absolutely zero confidence in Holy Cross, despite the fact that they return nearly every piece of their offense from last year and pose a matchup problem for UMass, especially in the secondary.

Holy Cross is much to smart to give us anything to put on the board so I guess Mr. Burtons thoughtless prediction will have to suffice. This does seem to be an area of strength for HC, I guess will see Saturday.

I did pick SDSU to win this game.

Agree with most W-L, spreads are wacky.

YSU will be carried out on a stretcher (returning 'eyes have 8 months of "...kick some A&%" built up, waiting for their first opponent). Only hope for YSU is that Tressel develops a stutter while yelling "substitution".

App will make a better game than expected (speed, baby. Only way Michigan can blowout is to post State Troopers along the sideline to write tickets to speeding Appies).

Holy Cross/UM? Crusaders receive last rites by mid 3rd qtr.

A&M will be merciful to the boys from the north...stopping at five possessions by halftime. Will stuff a couple more in the 4th just to remind everyone.

Sam Houston/Angelo...Bomar's the real deal and SHS is solid. SHS wants respect and they can start by showing how they can toy with AS at will. Don't normally encourage this, but would love to see a 40+ point spread here (just 'cause).

UC Aggies will be escorting the Vikings back to their boat by the 2nd qtr. If the Aggies have any cojones, they'll christen they're new stadium with Viking blood.

Game of the Week (great pick)...Glanville's a winner and the most underrated coach in college today. McNeese has the talent and advantage, but better bring their A-Game or THEY'LL be wearing black at the end. Closer than most expect.

I actually have this as my possible upset game this week. I'd still lay money on UMass though. xthumbsupx

Stop reading Street & Smith's Hen. Think most of those guys still live with their Mom's and ride the subway...and "I 95" is a new Will Smith movie.

Notes on the UC Davis vs. Western Washington game...from an Ag:

ALL-TIME SERIES

• UC Davis is 7-0 all-time against Western Washington, including a 48-19 win at Toomey Field in the last meeting in 2003.
• The Aggies are 4-0 against the Vikings at home, having not scored less than 40 points in the last three matchups in Davis... The high was a 55-24 victory in 1999.
• UC Davis has scored at least 28 points in five of the seven previous matchups.

The Viks from Bellingham are not strangers to the Aggies.

I know WWU is returning a lot of defenders, but they can't be near as tough as Texas Christian, NDSU or Cal Poly. And we managed 17 or more points against those fellas in 2006, two of them on the road. The only thing different this season is that we have new primary weapons, that's it. Instead of Kays/Nolan/Grant you're gonna hear Carter/Trombetta/Plough.

We've reloaded and we're going to stick it to the Viks in the Broiler...er Aggie Stadium.

AggieFinn, you can relax. Enjoy a beer (or two) and a tailgate on campus before the game (xrolleyesx), then head in to watch an A-B squad scrimmage. It'll give you the opportunity to see how well Warren and Tucker transition between running on the new turf and Viking defender's backs. Halftime entertainment should be the "pickin-o'-the-teeth" of the Viking backs from Faletoese's shoulder pads.
