A trio of three-year veterans and a one-year returnee who made his mark after transferring last year are the four seniors who have been selected co-captains for the 2007 Missouri State University football Bears. The new captains were selected by the squad and announced at the conclusion of preseason camp, with the Bears’ final scrimmage held Saturday at Plaster Field.
The senior captains include cornerback Marcus Colbert of Broken Arrow, Okla., tailback Gerald Davis of St. Louis, Mo., linebacker Jeron Poole of Austin, Texas, and offensive center David Tillman of St. Peters’s, Mo.
Colbert, Davis and Tillman are three-year lettermen while Poole earned his first letter in 2006 in his initial season after transferring to Missouri State. Poole started five of his 11 games last year and was 10th on the team in total tackles with 47. He and Colbert are the two returning starters on the defensive side of the football for the Bears this season. Colbert started four games in the Bears’ secondary as a freshman in 2004 and has been a full-time starter the past two seasons. He has 104 career tackles, two interceptions and has broken up 14 passes in three years.
On offense, Tillman is expected to be the Bears’ starting center for the third year in a row after starting at defensive tackle as a true freshman in 2004. He won the Missouri State Arthur Briggs Award in 2005 and was also on the Gateway Football Conference all-academic team that year. Gerald Davis has lettered three seasons with much of his playing time coming on special teams his first two years. He started four games at tailback during the 2006 season and rushed for 275 yards with six pass receptions.
The grid Bears switch to single daily workouts with the start of fall semester classes at Missouri State Monday (Aug. 20). Second-year head coach Terry Allen’s ballclub will open its 2007 season Thursday, Aug. 30, at Plaster Field in a 7 p.m. clash with the University of Missouri-Rolla.
