Here's the poll article for this week: http://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-week-5-top-25-results-3/

Pretty boring week again. The MVFC and Big Sky are still dominating the top of the poll with 10 of the top 13 teams. Add in the CAA and it's 13 of the top 14 from those three conferences. That top half of the poll is going to have to blow up one of these weeks.

The impressiveness of their win over JSU mattered to me. JSU obviously isn't great but I still have enough respect for them to be impressed by how thoroughly KSU beat them. UT Martin beat JSU by 3 a week ago and have parlayed that into a top 25 ranking as well with even less backing it up. I also gave KSU credit for a thorough beating of a Wofford team that has hung tough with VMI and ETSU the last two weeks.

I am as big a MU homer as they come and I do not really have an issue with it. Yes we have been told by many here that last uear, the year before etc etc ALL COUNT in the benefit of the doubt department and the opposite of that- so in that regard I do not understand Kennesaw based on both 2019 and the Spring season however, Wofford just played the # 15 team tough and KSU beat them handily. The JSU hate here is half tongue in cheek, and if it isn't it should be, they may underachieve but you beat an ACC team and have a couple other close games with good teams and an FBs loss, you do not suck. And KSU smoked them. If we had the exact resume that Ksu did this year we would be ranked like 10th so I am ok with it and frankly they may be better than we all think.. Only helps us if we even get to that game having it matter the higher they are,,

I think KSU is simple- They clearly have VERY good athletes and players although frankly I still do not understand how they recruit WR's..anyway, If you cannot figure out how to defend the triple option AND/OR do not have an offense that is going to score 75% of their drives and not turn the ball over, KSU is pretty freaking good. KSU on the right day can play with and beat anyone in FCS for the above stated reasons. Conversely, if a team gets a 2 score lead on them and can make a couple stops it outs enormous pressure on them and most likely they will not be able to get back in game. Frankly, with Monmouth's blueprint the last 2 years I am surprised they are still able to run this offense and succeed but to some extent they were "perfect storm" games..

It is also put up or shut up time for Monmouth ironically. HUGE GAME for us, them- The feeling around MU was that it was just a perfect storm against HC, we came out flatter than ever and they played great, we got out coached, out played and were over confident. Taking nothing away from HC we just do not think that would happen again. With that said we need to beat Princeton to sort of validate that thought and our two blowout wins over decent conference foes.

Much better poll this week. A tip of the cap to the voters. I agree with everything. As far as the Monmouth discussion goes, the Holy Cross game hurts them in the polls. However, I do admit that they are the team to beat in the Big South. The good news is KSU has drastically improved their ability to tackle in space, which has been our undoing vs Monmouth the previous two games.

I guess I'm not seeing why Monmouth should be above KSU. What is their signature victory to date? To me, getting boat raced at home by HC is why you're #30. FWIW (transitive property and all), Duquesne (#28) went on the road and whipped Merrimack, who handled Holy Cross at their place. So, Duquense>>>MC>>HC>>>MU, yet there's only a 2 spot difference in ranking? Either the Dukes are too low, or MU is too high, based on results so far. This weekend could prove that MU needs to rise, or fall out of ORV altogether.

Looking at my poll below, I think I agree with MTfan4life on Mercer, and I may have missed on Tennessee-Martin (although not sure yet). I have perhaps a bit too much on the moral victory side of things (Chattanooga, Central Arkansas, and Stephen F. Austin), and I will recalibrate as needed this upcoming week. Luckily, all of these are 18 or lower, so...

He was and yes it made a huge difference imho! I was impressed with Shoemaker but he doesn’t have quite the arm or the speed of Eric. SFA was able to unleash the rush to rattle the rookie but he stood tall and made plays. Also not having our kicker was big.

If Rodrigues can come back they're ranked about right. If he's out for awhile than you may be right.

Anyone know when the Aggies expect him back?

Coach Hawkins had indicated that Rodrigues was practicing last week and he was dressed for the Idaho game but didn't play. So no one knows for sure if he will play at Idaho State. The Aggies are being extra cautious with him as they should for any head injury.

The Ags started a true Fr QB, Miles Hastings, against the Vandals and he played pretty well for his first ever start but the offense was inconsistent. RFr QB, Trent Tompkins, who is a dual threat QB, took over in the final minute of the 3rd quarter and lit a spark in the team and shifted the momentum of the game with his ability to scramble and break tackles. It was the turning point in the game. Tompkins has been nicknamed "Magic" because of his heroics in the spring due his ability to make big, game changing plays. The knock on him seems to be his unorthodox style of passing where he doesn't use the seams of the ball and throws wearing gloves. The fans and the team love his competitiveness and his exciting style of play though.

Give credit to Idaho though. They have some excellent talent on their team. They were a bit of an unknown coming into this game since they had 2 FBS loses and a DII blowout. They also had 2 weeks to prepare for the Aggies and they came into the game inspired and ready to play. This was a tough game for the Aggies but they were resilient and came up with some big plays when they really needed them. It wasn't our sharpest game but they found a way to win.

At Idaho State, you mean. Playing in that quonset can be challenging, but I would think Davis has the ponies to beat the Bengals without him if they still want to play it safe.

Here is mine. Looking at it now I probably shouldn’t have had UT Martin as high as 19 but there are so many close teams after about 16 it’s tough to rank them.

1: Sam Houston Bearkats
2: South Dakota State Jackrabbits
3: James Madison Dukes
4: North Dakota State Bison
5: Eastern Washington Eagles
6: Southern Illinois Salukis
7: Montana Grizzlies

I don’t really understand how Nicholls is ranked. Yea their two losses are to fbs teams but they have yet to have a quality win and are 2-2. If they beat SELA next week then I’d rank them but I’m not really sure what they have done to deserve it now. I also thought they were a bit over ranked in the spring season last year.

I look at schedules like that and wheep

He is UNI's next 4

@ #4 NDSU on their homecoming
v #23 South Dakota
@ #1 SDSU on their homecoming
v #7 SIU

Then November is
@ Illinois State
@ 13 Missouri State
v WIU

Can UNI and UCD switch?
Yikes... the silver lining is the rest of the MVFC teams will be going through the same ringer for the most part. Missouri St has a stretch from weeks 8-11 where they go @NDSU, vs UND, @SIU, vs UNI.

With the unbalanced Big Sky schedule UCD misses Montana, Montana St, Portland St, and SUU while EWU misses Cal Poly, Idaho St, NAU, and Sac St. Before the big matchup between UCD and EWU on 11/13 UCD gets Cal Poly and NAU the previous two games whereas EWU gets Weber St and Montana St.

Yeah it's insane across the board. We follow tha tup with Missouri State 2 weeks after SIU. Thankfully we get WIU and ISUr rather than UND? Though given how WIU is playing is that really that big of a SoS win?

I know it's not quite the gauntlet that UNI faces (and others in the MVFC), especially with the Grills dropping both games at home against their ranked opponents of JMU and UC-Davis, but may I submit Montana State's last 5 weeks of the regular season:
@ #17 Weber State
vs ISU-o
@ #5 EWU
vs Idaho
@ #8 UM - Brawl of the Wild

That unbalanced schedule bit us in the ass this year, getting 3 of the best teams all on the road, all in the last half of the year. If we go 3-2, that's a pretty decent accomplishment. Our road to the Big Sky auto-bid is filled with potholes, speed traps and spike strips.

When they go to Divisions like that, should the MVFC look to form Divisions as stand alone 6 team conferences. This would allow teams to schedule more nonconference games and not require crossover games. Any crossover games would not be counted as a "Conference" game and that would let the MVFC - North go beat up on :p the OVC (5) /WAC (7)/ASun (6)/Southland (7)/Pioneer .

Monmouth ahead of Harvard. The Crimson would beat them by 60.

by 60!! something they did not even come close to doing to lowly G'town and Brown. I get that you may be exaggerating but one thing we know this year is that comparative scores mean very little. You got us good, fair and square but it was just a perfect storm. Monmouth is much better than what was shown against HC it's like I was not even watching Monmouth. No excuses, ***** happens but I just do not think seeing a team once can give you a great idea of who they are. People will either over rate or under rate.

And this goes back to my gripe from last 2 years about people ranking teams based on the previous year or two- Monmouth gets a bit of the benefit of the doubt (within reason) based on last years performance against the National Champs. Okay we got blown out in our FBS (although it was a 2 score game with 10 left in the game and we had the ball), we "escape" Fordham and get beat up by you guys, but if you want to compare scores look what we did to Charleston Southern and Gardner Webb. Charleston Southern lost to FBS E. Carolina by 3 and had the ball at midfield as time ran out. East Carolina almost beat South Carolina. We beat Gardner Webb worse than HC beat us and Gardner Webb gave Georgia Southern all they could handle. Would you say Harvard or even you guys would beat East Carolina or lose by 3? Would you and them play within 1 score of Georgia Southern? Maybe. It could happen, but comparing scores does not mean anything most of the time, if it did that is like saying Monmouth would beat East Carolina by 3 scores since East Carolina barely held on to beat Charleston Southern, a team we beat by 30 with backups playing half the game. I have no beef, I like Holy Cross and the coach but we could do this all night long. Now maybe I am wrong and you just think Harvard is THAT good, but I promise the Monmouth team you beat will never be seen again this year not even close. It was a 500 yr flood, perfect storm, lightning strike type game and too much should not be made of it or any "1" game..

Also, just to make another point about comparing scores and what not- Holy Cross beats yale on a last minute FG. Yale only beats freaking Cornell by 6! Cornell lost to Bucknell by 2 scores! Bucknell got shutout in a 2 score loss to Sacred Heart! Sacred Heart lost to Howard!

Long season, and sometimes weird stuff happens. Monmouth has a chance to erase the HC debacle by beating Princeton and winning the Big South, which even though nobody here gives credit for is a big deal. There is way more talent than people realize. Campbell is good. Kennesaw is good. Even 0-5 North Alabama has talent.

Yeah that was 2017 when we got taken to the woodshed by N Iowa. then we missed in 2018 (the princeton blowout) made it in 2019, beat you guys then got whopped by JMU. then the spring season last year/sam houston.. I agree, i got messed up between 2018 and 2019 myself.

Same here man, we like HC and outside of HC community nobody was more upset to see the Harvard result than us! frankly I am still amazed at what happened to us against you. But def pulling for the Cross to beat Fordham/Lafayette and get back to the post season. Hope you can keep Chesney. Our path is the same, win our conference which looks good so far but Campbell, NC A&T, Kennesaw loom large..Even North Alabama is capable hopefully they do not figure out to win before they play us. Nothing like the FCS playoffs and the week leading up and all that, just want to get back.

why was he not starting in the first place ? I’m not suggesting he is better than the #1 but looked much better than the #2

I think UC Davis might be overrated some. I like them and have them ranked high but they will probably take a hit in coming weeks ... just a hunch

it was the eye test with no stats

Be sure to check in on Princeton Monmouth game this Saturday, it’s put up or shut up time for those that are voting for Ivy League teams

I like the way Princeton plays, going for it on 4th down in your own territory is refreshing while watching Rip Van Rocco games

A couple of interesting losses today to consider as most significant. UC Davis and JMU

Agreed. A LOT of top teams lost today. To me SDSU pissing that game away was the biggest.

It’s a huge loss, but to me it says more about SIU’s grit and determination.

IMO, it's not a huge loss. SDSU controls their own destiny, just like NDSU and SIU. SDSU wins out, they are a top 2 seed.

IMO EWU controls its own destiny and then SIU/NDSU if we both win out is a coin flip for #2 (we don’t play each other). But if SDSU beats us they’ll still need SIU or EWU to lose, and maybe Sam Houston too. Their resume won’t be good but being defending champs will carry a lot of clout.

Good point. However, Eastern Washington and Montana State now enter the conversation as a top 2 seed with the SDSU loss.

Boy that game in Brookins is going to be huge!

It’s shaping up to be a wild ride positioning for the top 2 seeds. As I see it only 2 teams control their own destiny, that’s EWU & Montana State. They play each other so that will knock one of them out. NDSU & SIU can both run the table as we don’t play each other, one of us will be a top 2 seed along with EWU/MSU but I have no idea which one.

Do not vote for UND in Top 25. They are 2-3 and basically a dumpster fire on offense. Next week at SIU is gonna be fugly.

This weekend makes things really interesting.

If NDSU wins out top 2 seed.
If EWU wins put top 2 seed.
Does SHSU get a top 2 seed, with their weak schedule, as the defending Champions?
What about a 1 loss SIU team (very close loss to Kansas State)?
If SDSU and JMU win are they a top 2?
Hell, what about Villanova after the win over the Dukes?

What about East Tennessee State? They have a FBS win too.

Yikes. What about the Rhode Island Rams, they have Villanova and UMass (FBS) yet.

PLUS....Jacksonville State won today....they are the favorite for a top 2 seed, right...LOL!

Going to be a challenge this week with the top 25.

Cheers all!

Yeah, there's a lot of teams you could probably say could win out and get a top 2 seed... I'd say 10+ right now. It really depends on how everything else shapes up. Just go back and look at the 2016 for a scenario where a bunch of teams thought "if we win out (minus FBS games) we're a top #2 seed" and there just weren't enough seats at the table. You had:

1) NDSU: 10-1 - MVFC co-champ with a win over B1G Iowa
2) EWU: 10-1 - Big Sky champ with a win over Pac-12 Washington St and only loss in OT @NDSU
3) Jacksonville St: 10-1 - OVC champ and only loss was to LSU
4) JMU: 10-1 - CAA champ and only loss was to North Carolina
5) Sam Houston: 11-0 - Southland champ but with a pretty weak schedule and no FBS win
6) The Citadel: 10-1 - SOCON champ and only loss was to North Carolina (just like JMU)

One season before that in 2015 Illinois St got the 2 seed at 9-2 with an FBS loss and a 7-1 MVFC record and NDSU got the 3 seed with a 9-2 record which was 2 FCS losses and the same 7-1 MVFC mark.

I expected to see South Dakota State win too, they’re the most complete team in the nation IMO and were worthy of their top ranking. I love the way SIU plays though, their never say die attitude and their big play abilities. Nick Hill is a really good coach for them it seems. Baker is the real deal and it seems like they’ve got a talented defense again. Idk though I’ve only watched them twice, still wouldn’t want to face them early in the playoffs.

JMU, on the other hand, well they’re not that good and if the CAA wasn’t on par with the Southland this year then they’d have been exposed earlier. xcoffeex

Nic Baker is a stud... there's a reason why they benched Lebanowitz who took them to the quarterfinals in the spring for Baker... he's the best QB in the MVFC IMO. If SIU could get their defense straightened out they'd be a national title favorite IMO. They have a great QB, fantastic WRs, and studs at RB... defense is all that's holding them back and I still think they can get that figured out if the chips fall the right way for them from here on out.

Still, their D won the game for them today. They made the stop in OT and forced 3 turnovers during the game. They needed all of that.

SIU's defense definitely flashes... that's why I think they can be a juggernaut if they can figure out how to get the defense to show that consistently.

Sometimes our offense scores so quickly that it seems like the D is on the field forever.

Indeed. They will have very few if any quality wins. Spring results should have no bearing. Not saying they won’t, but they shouldn’t.
