Eric Barriere, I haven't heard of them. Are they one of those WAC-y teams or are they transitional? xsmiley_wix

They're in Bishop Sycamore's conference.

The above only includes the less than half of teams that have played 4 games. FCS leaders in total offense- team:
1. EWU 632 ypg
2. Presbyterian 566.5 ypg
3. SELA 554.7 ypg
4. SHSU 533 ypg
5. JMU 519.3 ypg
.
Looks like Barriere would be 17th on the list in ypg..

Stats are a fun way to try to predict games. All of the team and individual stats are posted by the NCAA at https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fcs

I think Presby being 2nd on this list proves that. #2 in total offense and total ypg and 4th in ppg at 48.8, yet 90-95% of the FCS teams would beat them like a drum.

like I said
fun to look at but I don’t use to predict games... I pick based on talent mostly and the eye test

I will look at stats to identify talent and go que up a game to check out a player for sure

I really think people underrate their ability to use this. Our impressions can be made from lots of cues we don't even consciously recognize and realize. I like stats. But you have to put them in perspective. Aside from the obvious mismatch of teams sometimes, it is easy to overlook starters piling up yardage against a team down by 40 in the fourth and just waiting for the game to end. But stats hide this. Unless you go look yourself.

Points are stats. A lot of times you can just look at that stat and tell who won the game.

Relevance of stats all comes down to isolating the stats to teams of relatively similar strength. Ignore the extremes (tough FBS and patsy games), but do drill down on the game stats against against relevant opponents .. then stats mean a lot more in terms of predictive value. Toughest stats to factor in are special teams .. big plays/mistakes, field position gained or lost, etc. But stats are very relevant if analyzed properly .. they completely explain who won or lost, and why. Then take those relevant game stats across a season as you approach playoffs .. then they become even more relevant.

And yes, anygivensaturday/sunday still applies .. but relevant stats do have predictive value.

I don't think the "eye test" is very practical by itself, unless you do this for a living. Assuming were not talking about those people, who could watch enough relevant games to be good at an "eye test" approach. So why not also use relevant game stats .. it would be silly not to.
