BROOKINGS - South Dakota State University Coach John Stiegelmeier is a man of conviction, and he firmly believes that his team has improved each year since jumping to the NCAA Division I level.
The arc of improvement in terms of wins and losses: 6-5, 6-5 and 7-4.
That's a one-game bump across three seasons - and by the narrowest of margins. SDSU won four contests by seven points or less last fall and scored exactly as many points as it allowed (235) - that was enough to catapult the team into the Football Championship Subdivision postseason and preseason polls for the first time, increase season-ticket sales and boost recruiting.
The moral of the story: A reclassifying program has very little margin for error. . . . (read more)
